I have a number of his recordings, mainly with Pat Metheny and Ornette Coleman (a box set of the Atlantic years). I've always wanted to learn more about how he was able to play in that group with no chords changes. Listening, reacting and almost predicting where the music would go. He never struck me as a chops kind of player, more brain and less brawn. Then again, he led his own groups and played on Brecker's solo debut. Thank you for outlining some of his ideas.

Exactly, not a lot of chops, but a ton of feeling. Those recordings with Ornette are really incredible. Thank you for watching!

Check out the jazz novel "the Bear Comes Home" by Rafi Zabor. Charlie Haden is a character in that book who is really impactful to the direction of the narrative. Rafi Zabor knew Charlie Haden and I believe they were friends. I first came across Rafi Zabor's writing when he wrote the liner notes to Charlie Haden and Kenny Barron's duo album "Night and the City"

Really nice lesson. Somehow haven’t come across Charlie yet - just a few months into bass.
Will be exploring him more over the upcoming months - thanks!
    Cheers

Charlie def has strains of PC. PC and Israel Crosby kinda did those those melody based lines related to the changes but not outlining them outright, some how tho you can still hear them in context.

Ach! Cole I thought you would mention Haden's basses, which I believe were an 1843 Vuillaume and a Pöllmann from 1973. How those woods must have coalesced from years of his deep-toned thumping.
By the way, what bass are you using in this vid? Always like to know . . . and kudos for noting the origins of his playing style, really an ancillary form of broken-time playing.

Wow, I did not think to mention his basses ... but I totally should have! I didn't know about the Pöllmann but I will look into it further.
In this video I am using a German bass from 1900, which is my main instrument. Thanks for watching!

@@coledavismusic You're welcome! Haden had another bass, a French Auray, which he kept in Europe. And for some time he had a Prescott, with which it is claimed he did that famous Five Spot gig with Ornette. His Vuillaume is still listed for sale (Robertson & Sons, Albuquerque), if you've got c.$200k lying around.
Were he still with us, I think he'd have outgrown the U.S. and be living in Europe, playing with Frisell, and perhaps as well with someone like Andy Sheppard, or Theo Coker. Gonzalo. Or how about a duet album with Ron Carter?
So, who will you be featuring next? Would love to see you cover David Izenson, or maybe Miroslav, or a not-so-well-known Euro, Jesper Lundgaard (Paul Bley).

I love Charlie Haden's sound and am impressed by his political statements and engagement (e.g. against the Portuguese dictatorship) - a whole other chapter of his biography! Watch "Rambling Boy", a documentary on hin for more details. I once attended a master class with him and was quite less impressed by his playing technique (weird fingerings) and teaching skill. Nevertheless, he's on some great recordings and will always be remembered for his melodic playing! My favorite tune with him is "My Back Pages / Keith Jarrett Trio" ruclips.net/video/sOgwNUY_QCs/видео.html And I love the duo album with Pat Metheny! Thanks, Cole, for bringing him up in your channel!

I LOVED Rambling Boy. A really amazing doc and shows what a great human he was. The story of him fighting against the Portugese dictatorship is really phenomenal. And I don't know that Keith tune but will check it out, thanks for sending!

@@coledavismusic I was at the premier in Vancouver, BC and he and his wife attended. I got to meet him and shake hands and talk with him for a few minutes, and it was one of the few times in my life that I've been totally star struck. Thanks for the great video on his playing!
