This scene clearly has nothing to do with the last supper. There were around 20 men and women standing around an overweight lady. Not 12 men sat around a skinny bearded man. The blue singer is clearly Dionysius the Greek god of party and wine, hence the grapes around his body.
It’s sad to see some Christians make a mockery of their religion of peace through their unjustified hatred. The show’s creative director has been insulted for being gay or Jewish and even received death threats!
Even if this was a parody of the last supper, and it’s not, Jesus famously said that facing insults you should turn the other cheek. Maybe it’s time to respect his teachings instead of Turing into full paranoid mode.
The rest of the ceremony was grandiose. Using the most beautiful city in the world and it’s landmarks as a stage was an incredible idea, very hard to organise, their were lots of unique creative ideas, for the first time the flame was lit by a man and a woman, it uses no fuel, the torch was in the hands of non French athletes, and the last ones came as a group, with some Paralympic athletes, and the oldest Olympic athlete from france who is 100.
These games are about inclusivity and sustainability.

But I would argue that the ancient Greeks would have been shocked and insulted by the idiotic display that the French organizers put on. I'm glad I finally found this although I wish I could also hear what they are singing. I've heard others say this is Dionysus, which makes a lot of sense although he is associated with the Dionysiac festival where Greek tragedy and comedy were performed. (The festival was the only event women were allowed to attend.) Looking at this, the other figures are the chorus. The chorus initially was 50 men who danced and sang lyric hymns to praise Dionysus. You can see one of the people on stage has a lyre (from which we eventually ended up with what we call lyric poetry). The chorus eventually got turned into the chorus in Greek tragedy and acting and drama were born with main actors engaging in dialogue and the chorus commenting on the action.

As a whole this was the most interesting and exciting Olympics opening ceremony so far (the second best was the one in London imho). This moment was just a small part of a long and exceptionally well thought and organized program with so much historical, cultural and social references. It was cinematic, it was entertaining. So much art, so much good music, so much fashion, so much good choreography and so many messages. Before judging, people need to understand what were the ideas, what were the sources. People need to read more about art and history in general. It's funny that people nowadays are more narrow minded than in the 60s and 70s. Can you imagine if the Sex Pistols came out today? Or if The Rolling Stones were breaking though today? WHat is Madonna was filming her Erotica videos today? People would be cancelling all those great artists. Pathetic.

It’s not an “either-or.” This performance changed themes throughout. It started out as a nod to the Last Supper, given the haloed center figure flanked by on-lookers on a single side of the table (note the camera angle). It then transformed into a fashion show runway with onlookers on each side of the table, then finally capped off with a nod to Dionysus (or Bacchus, latinized) and associated feasting. Francophones will also catch the play on words here on the Seine.
Barbara Butch apparently interpreted the opening pose as a nod the La Cène per her original IG post. It was taken down as soon as the backlash started. The whole “it’s only about Greek Gods” thing is easily refuted and is, frankly, just a lie to cover up a real faux-pas.
The Olympics committee owes the world a real apology and promise to not let this happen again. Let’s just leave religious themes out and focus on the athletes. They’re the real heroes here, and should not be overshadowed by some provocative or political stunt.

OMG! All of you people need to "get a life" and stop getting your knickers in a knot over a performance about an ancient Greek God who "offends" your modern prudishness. If anything, the organizers DID manage to be inclusive in this performance, which is more than I can say for most of the people leaving comments about it. Perhaps it is the ancient Pagan theme that offends you? Seriously. Put things in perspective. I didn't like a lot of performances that were done during the opening ceremonies, like the song performed by Celine Dion. Who cares? In the scheme of things, it doesn't matter!

To continue my previous comment: Both Nietzsche (The Birth of Tragedy) and Guthrie (The Greeks and Their Gods) showed that Apollo and Dionysus contrasted the two aspects of human nature. Apollo represented reason, order, logic, boundaries, control. Dionysus represented the irrational part of man, human passion, festivity, the desire to let go rather than be controlled by law and order, which represent Apollo. The Greeks and Their Gods is a wonderful, fascinating book. I bought it at the college bookstore when I was an undergraduate years ago and a philosophy major. Both Apollo and Dionysus serve a purpose. And the actor/singer was famous for his original appearance on the Seine (the explanation points out). And France is famous for its vineyards and wine. This could not be more appropriate symbolically: blending the two countries together: Greece and France. And it also tied this together with French fashion industry, haute couture, as the men in drag were part of the audience for that.
