I am not very familliar with the early european settlers in North America. But isn't New England one of the first areas to be populated when they came to the continent? Looks like a mix between european and american style
New England cities are very charming and quaint. I think it’s because of the similar amenities that European cities have. Every other American city with the exception of Chicago and NYC seems bland and boring to me. Portland is a hidden gem.

I spent many early years in Portland. The old port was run down in the 1960s but started revitalizing in the 1970s. Very salty place then and full of Maine dock area characters. Went back a few years ago and it is more upscale. Great place.

Very pretty town. There is something about New England towns and cities. They're on average much more attractive than towns in the rest of America.
