- Welcome to an episode of Under the Radar, a series where i look at anime that have gone under the radar. I talk about anime that you might not have heard about.
In this episode i talked about Masaaki Yuasa's Kaiba TV series.

Kaiba was written to be watched at least twice.
Can you recommend me an anime series like kaiba
@@OmarMohamed-lo5ih Try Fantastic Planet it will screw with your brain, Heavy Metal 1981, Cat Soup, World of Tomorrow by Don hertzfeldt, and Angel Egg.
@@OmarMohamed-lo5ih you guys should check out Aeon Flux the animated series not the fucking movie. Aeon Flux is like heavy metal (1981) but very surreal, weird, philosophical, symbolic and moral ambiguous its like Egon Schiele, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Salvador Dali and George Orwell on drugs, the art style is not anime but more of a European style like Moebius or similar to Herge ligne claire style that used in Tintin. it question us who is good and evil is it Aeon Flux ( the show main character) the dominatrix anarchist sexy agent from Monica or is it the messianic narcissistic Bregna technocratic dictator Trevor Goodchild that wants to build a utopia in his own way. Same
At the VERY least.
That episode with kuroniko and piano though, it made me cry like a baby.
That *F U C K E D* me *U P*
It thought I was the only one.
As we say... You'd have no heart if you didn't feel bad about Chroniko's sad fate.
Thank goodness I wasn’t the only one
@@missquark_ that’s why she has a place in my heart
If you plan on watching this, be prepared for a feel trip.
+1 on both the “feel” and “trip” parts.
I didn't like the style at first, but it was so strange I kept watching. It was a serious emotional roller coaster. Just seeing the animation style makes me feel sad.
Actually for me the the 60s tezuka type style is what made want to watch it the first place.
@@radiokunio3738 I see a few people saying they were turned off by the art but I love it too. Yuasa sacrifices detail for better quality animation
I love this series. I tried it out on a whim and it proved to be one of my favorite anime of all time. It's probably the only anime that almost made me cry.
The Chroniko, Lighthouse and Body Designer episodes were the most stirring ones in my opinion. They deserve multiple viewings.
+Daes Facetus The Chroniko episode was the one that almost made me cry.
Chroniko's episode just broke me,she didn't deserve what happened to her :(
Kaiba made me hate plants.
Undertale too
Eat your vegetables BEFORE THEY KILL YOU!!
I just got my bachelor's degree in plant science... fml
@@jebadiahjackson You know their weaknesses now.
Definitely a great anime that went under the radar... how is no one talking about this???
Too much feels or deepness for the mainstream public. My father would probably fall asleep before ep 1. Kinda sad, but not everybody's up for that kind of experience. Or perhaps it is marketability; sadness doesn't make for stuff people will share to their close ones.
God damnit Chiriko, as happy as the ending seemed I could just never get over Chiriko.
A cartoonish and playful art-style yet tells a deep and mature story. That's why I loved Yuasa's masterpiece Kaiba. The same reason I also love FINAL FANTASY IX.
I just found this series, and finished it in a few days. One of my absolute favorites, and I've been watching anime for about 35 years. :) Masterful. Artful. Deep. Holy cow! And the music? Everything about this series is tops.
Digibro did a video about Kaiba a little while ago and it made me go check it out because I had no idea it was from Masaaki Yuasa, arguably my favourite anime director. What I love about Kaiba is how the artstyle juxtaposes the subject matter so harshly without feeling out of place. Easily one of the best sci-fi worlds I've seen in anime. It was fantastic and really deserves a watch. :)
goodbye Vanilla and chroniko :')
Thank you for helping spread this show! I love it so much!
Thanks to this video, I looked up the series and somebody had uploaded all 12 episodes on RUclips, so I was able to watch this amazing series.
The most underrated thing I’ve seen ever
There are only two times that I know of that I cried while watching something that I can remember. Those were “Food Inc” and Episode 3 of Kiaba. I didn’t think i was able to cry over fictional things until i watched kiaba.
Kaiba is the best anime I've ever seen.....
like ever....
+DMC1 It's a masterpiece; and people say "Only REALISM can make you feel immersed in a compelling story" especially in video games (just look at David Cage). Those people need to watch Kaiba, and then play Final Fantasy 9 and Zelda: Wind Waker to see just how compelling a cartoonish art style can make a story.
Nice concept for a new series. :)
I'll have to look into Kaiba later.
It's nice to see a new art style used in anime.
Please make än analysis of this anime. The last few episodes left me utterly confused
Älvdalsk
One of my favorite anime I've ever seen... Good start for your show.
What anime would you like to see on Under The Radar?
Daniel Teffera Area 88 is definitely one i'd like to do :)
Shinsekai Yori, Ergo Proxy, and Aoi Bungaku would be great.
***** yas
RahXephon or Shinsekai yori.
Personally, Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou. It's entirely comedy but does it in such a unique style and originality that I consistently recommend for those who love to laugh. And great series buddy!
I swear I cannot get enough of his artistic direction.
Holy shit, great video. Kaiba seems like my cup of tea so i'll check it out within the next week or two.
OtakuTendencies Enjoy! :)
+AnimeEveryday After seeing this video, I looked up the series and somebody had apparently uploaded all 12 episodes on RUclips, so I was able to binge watch this series. It was AMAZING; I felt attached to the world, the characters were well-written, as was everything else in the series, and the unique, more cartoony art style really caught my attention (and people say you can only be compelled by REALISM). This was a very outstanding series, this is probably going to be my favorite anime, in fact it is probably one of the best animated series of all time.

It's so confusing but its so addicting as well. I recommend if you watch it, ya gotta pay serious attention
This show is amazing.
Damn beautiful anime, it became one of my favorites
Kaiba’s creator truly is a skilled story teller for sure. A true professional anime maker.
The ultimate question his anime brings me is: is the creator FOR human memories being able to be moved from one body to another OR is he AGAINST human memories being able to be moved from one body to another.
Because he professionally shows the repercussions of everybody having that technology available in his anime Kaiba so.... Is he FOR or AGAINST?
I personally don’t think the repercussions are worth making the technology available precisely because of the horrors that are presented in Kaiba.
Hence why I’m against that tech being made.
I’m a John Conner sort of man.
But I’m sure an AI fanatic would instead support this memory technology being created...
Nuclear technology was a gift to humanity via Albert Einstein. Yet he cried within days of his gifts being used to kill hundreds upon thousands of innocent Japanese citizens during World War 2.
He cried because he felt he had blood on his hands. Albert Einstein wasn’t stupid. He knew humanity was capable of terrible things. Which contributed to him crying when he did.
I think it made itself into the newspaper back in the day. That’s how bad his crying was. One of Albert Einstein’s greatest regrets if I remember correctly. It’s been awhile.
I was moved by this. I felt pity for Albert.
I would be terrified to be in his shoes. Omg I would be terrified. So much blood...
Memory technology has repercussions which are explored in Kaiba that are in the same boat as Albert’s Einstein’s story.
Kaiba truly shows the horrors of that technology. So, with Albert’s story in mind, I must say I’m firmly against such technology.
Much less agony and horror and limbo that way.
The world has enough agony and horror and cyclical BS as it is already. So why contribute to the madness....
I mean... It kinda almost makes you not want to bring children into this crazy ass world we live in. The horrors they’ll have to face.
I got a friend from Ethiopia who’s mother and father are being held hostage by evil neighbors. Entire regions of towns and villages fight amongst other regions simply because you are from a different region.
He’s trying to become legal so he can bring his family here. Provided they are still alive by the time he gets his citizenship.
I got another friend who survived the horrors of the Middle East and yet while he’s here in America he has to endure the agony of fellow middle easterners trying to force him to hate democracy and capitalism and freedom of speech etc etc. he’s an Ex-Muslim that loves America. He loves capitalism and democracy. He loves America so much I feel like he’s more patriotic than average citizens. Lol
But his family and friends from back home? They hate him for it. They hate it with a passion and domestic abuse and violence are commonplace. “Capitalist pig” they call him.
“Infidel” they call him. “Traitor”.
Yet he tells me, “America has given me so much more than Pakistan ever did. I’m so glad to be here. I never want to go back.”
I got another friend who’s African American who’s surrounded by family members and fellow people his age who want him dating only black women. He gets a lot of heat for even looking to a Non-black women. He looks at a Spanish women or a white women and his family and people his age in his social circles become passive aggressive and try to shame him for not wanting a black women.
It makes him so angry. He tells me, “black people always pull the race card and think that makes them immune to being called racist themselves but Black people have become just as racist as white people from the old days. It’s insane. You would think Black people wouldn’t become the very people they suffered under. Yet here I am. Suffering.”
Same goes for another friend of mine from South Korea. His parents only want him marrying South Korea girl. And not just any South Korean girl. She has to be rich. Doesn’t matter if she’s a nice proper 10/10 here in America. If she’s not rich, the parents don’t want her for the guy. He doesn’t want to end the relationships but he does for fear of his parents. He has reached the point where his heart has been broken so many times because he obeys his parents every time they tell him to dump girls that his heart has become cold. He doesn’t care about women anymore. He now dates whatever rich girl his parents find him but his heart is never in it. His heart is broken. He gave up on love. He never smiles when his parents take pictures of him with the rich girls. He’s so sad. Like he’s contemplating suicide... He would always hide his wrists..... I haven’t heard from him in awhile.... but his South Korean parents are super happy last I checked though.... I assume because they don’t give a rat’s ass about how they are shitting all over their son’s heart. Men have hearts just like women do. Mess with a women’s heart and you get what you see on TV. Same for men. You keep fucking with a man’s heart, something is going to happen and it won’t be pretty. Same thing.
The point is: this world is fucking crazy enough as it is.
Memory technology would be that final push that the joker was telling Batman about in the Batman movie with the birth of two face and scare crow and the Arkham Asylum being opened with the 2 boats.
That final push Batman tried so hard to prevent.
We don’t need The Joker’s Final Push.
No thank you.
Same level as "ima soko ni iru boku" SOOO SAAAD!!
This is one of the best anime and hecking trippy
My first watch......I binged it......FEELS.....so many.......made My must watch Anime list .
So uh
Hey RUclips
Why are you marking Kaiba episodes as “for kids”
What’s uh
What’s up with that
They are doing it? That's like the worst mistake ever
It may look like it is but it sure is not
It's really bad because only the episodes with explicit sexual content are labeled for kids, after episode 5 or so it's no longer "for kids"
@@jacobcurliss9687 yeah 6-year-old me would be fuckin scarred if someone let me see the second episode
@@elderberryva9282 i was 14 when i saw it and that scene kept me from watching it till yesterday.
Hmm . Kaiba seems interesting ,
I’ve never seen anything like it . And yes , it evokes my feelings , as an adult .
The creator must have touched something in me , because I think I want to see it .
I’ve only seen parts of it , and heard narrations . So I’m interested .
Liked the new serie and this anime caled my atention I might whatch it in a possible future (especially since january seems like a bad month for animes) I will just finish a couple of anime I'm watching right now
Sounds good! Going to check it out
Such a Masterpiece
Might be an odd one but did you watch mawaru penguindrum? Its this weird anime full of symbolism that many of I still don't get.
Then there is the mine fujiko to iu onna, a very artsy anime. Uchoten kazoku might be a good one too, it was completely overlooked at its season.
Apparently PewDiePie admitted that Kaiba was one of his favorite anime as a fellow nerd/dork (he couldn't stop laughing at himself in embarrassment).
my new top 1 anime sharing the spot with dorohedoro
Nice video I'll check this out soon
Very good.
Maasaki Yuasa is the James Gunn of anime
may i ask a dumb question? well two dumb questions, im an american and find that most my country men dont have much of a taste for film in artistic and academic ways. also i have noticed that most of the good more academic film channels on youtube are ran by English, Scotch, and Irishmen. is film portrayed more as art over there, dose the same strong classic theater programs that produces superior acting talent also breed a deeper respect for the medium, or is it all just a shallow observation on my part?
Planetes?
I'm so pissed the bluray has no special features
theres a bluray??
@@eco1969 Still worth it
@@PseudoMystic yeahhh, now that i know theres blurays i want one lmao
Under The Radar: Shinsekai Yori? please
How did you find the raw version of Kaiba?
will there be a dub of kaiba
Nope. They don't even have a sub that you can legally access unless you are Australian.
@@Sir_Hatsley actually there is a sub on youtube plus if you look up kaiba on youtube you can find a channel for a web site that gives u a free viewing of kaiba with subs called midnight crush (or something like that)

In my opinion it's better than " to your eternity" exept for ep 1
Episodic style
So it's kind of like mushi-shi?
I wouldn't say that, the art styles aren't similar and the subjects they cover aren't really the same either. Most importantly they cover different themes entirely. Just my opinion though
It was recommended to me on RUclips. And I got curious Bcs it was so weird. I ended up loving it . But had too look up an explanation for the last 2 ep Bcs I got lost lol. But overall o recommend watching it!!
I need something like 108 episodes of explanations because I feel like I understood only 10% of the story :D
