    I am apparently a stage 3 hoarder. Depression, PTSD, low self esteem, anxiety, suicidal ideation, all that fun stuff.. And watching these videos has done SO much for me in looking at how I hold onto stuff.
    I never understood that gut feeling of fear and dread whenever my mum wanted me to throw things away. But now I do, and I can look at that feeling and tell it to f*ck off. This is my life, my home, and I'm not going to let myself get worse.

      Does a hoarder actually know how much stuff they have? Or is the hoarding in the acquisition of things". Once in the house if the item.is not used what purpose does it serve?

    • @TheMinimalistTherapist
      @TheMinimalistTherapist 10 месяцев назад +37

      @@trishf2184 Tricky to answer as not everyone who hoards is the same. It depends what stage they are at too. But in my personal experience, most people who hoard are aware on some level that they are unable to part with things to the extent that it adversely impacts their lives, but most have complex defence mechanisms in place around that awareness. It's unusual to see someone entering therapy until they are ready to explore what underpins their relationship with their stuff. The purpose the items serve is about the *feeling* it creates (or prevents) for the person. There are often themes of loss, grief, deprivation, control and externalised self worth. Hoarding disorder takes many years to build and many years to dismantle.
      I just have so SO much admiration for anyone willing to face down the pain of hoarding disorder.

      I concur. I also tell people that don’t understand that THINGS will never leave you, they will never talk back or degrade you. At some point, it becomes a lot about protecting yourself from the outside world, even family. They aren’t able to understand that these things are literally trash, or can kill you. Sometimes they refuse to believe that they have a rat/mouse, or bug infestation. He explains in some episodes that the frontal lobes that control emotion and major decision making would not light up on an mri the same way as a normal brain. He says that throwing out trash feels more like you’re throwing away a pet or a family member.

      I remember back 40 years ago when my Dad and Brother went into my storage unit and threw away what they 'thought' I didn't need and it was just basic household stuff, most of or which I had previous to getting married 2 years before. Then 21 years later my Dad went out to the back barn where I had things stored and ordered a dumpster and started loading it up with my property. I'll never forget the phone call I received on my way home one night, when he said that I might want to stop by the dumpster and see if there was anything in it that I wanted to keep.
      I wasn't a hoarder then, both of those times (20 years apart) I had recently moved and just had my things stored in boxes. But something happened in the years since, and now I could probably be defined as one now. And the hardest thing I can do is bring myself to throw away something. I was never like that before, but I guess the helpless feeling of losing my things over and over to someone who took it upon themselves to play God, did that to me. I'm glad you understand that someone throwing your things away is traumatic. It still haunts me almost 40 years later.

      I wish people get help before they get to this point. But that's not realistic, usually people just let it go. One day we might get mental health problems care as people with diabetes. I don't see anyone ashamed to tell others they are diabetic. Never mind, that some times or many times it is our fault. Diet make us diabetic. Mental health not, you are born like that and trauma triggers the problem. I am not sure how many people are born with diabetes, maybe 20%? It is about time to us not to be ashamed of having mental illness. Temporary or not.

    I have been helping a hoarder for the last few years. I can tell the exact year their hoarding started by the date on papers, and it is when their parent threw out their entire childhood home, and retired in another country. Everything was gone and they felt like their parent had thrown them (my friend) in the trash too.
    And because of the trauma of that, they responded by starting to hoard everything.
    I totally understand not wanting to feel such heartbreak again, 💔😢when though the hoarding is of course a misguided way to avoid that pain.
    Their home is becoming more and more usable/livable and nice to stay in.

    • @mimosal3767
      @mimosal3767 6 месяцев назад +9

      yes, even some people being more understanding can be harsh on them (I know a Frenhc guy on youtube using a shovel but... still being careful about paper and thing. Also, what he cleans is worst that the video we see here, since often the floor is filled with poop.
      but about the big mdia shows... whe they force them to throw things, like "but it is useless" being like "I think there is only one good way to think and I will "help" you forcing you to do my way" it breaks my heart.
      Because even if I am not with that disorder, I kneq loss, depression, how I need my stuffs as "bubble" to make my home mine, a safe place, and how I feel really bad if someone disturbs that.
      If someone would do that to me, I would be in very high anxiety I think, needing time to make my home "mine" again, and for these people I guess this means more hoarding to compensate, as he explains so well in an other video.

      To be fair, a lot of the people on the shows are in situations where they’re facing eviction or severe living conditions and need a quick radical change. They say they offer therapy after the show is over, but a lot of people still refuse the help. I think most of the people on the show aren’t ready for the help, but are forced into it by their living situation.

A recent female I was assigned to her home is almost exactly same as what you are handling right down to the entire sink full of black water from weeks of silverware sitting in sink. I spent 6 hours first day just to get dishes, countertop and floor to some sort of cleanliness level. I was overwhelmed for first two hours then zoned out and kept going. I've become obsessed with Mr. Clean Clean Freak because of his channel. Annnnnnnnnd, his APC too but I couldn't remember his recipe so I had to look up one and make my own. I have to say, I just spent the last few days last week removing things out of our 2-car, fenced in, covered driveway to get rid of things. I TRULY understand what he's doing because I'm doing it myself at home. Massive clutter but a different kind of clutter because I've dealt with it for years. Our clutter is what I call a somewhat organized clutter in totes. Since I'd done this from Mar. 2018-September 2018 to do: our bedroom closet, our 2 car, fenced in, covered patio, our 'back building' that's at least 500sq feet, plus our teeny 800sq ft house-teeny kitchen, dining room, bathroom, our bedroom, hallway, living room & laundryroom. I then made a promise to myself to do my papers. 7 file cabinet drawers FILLED to the rim of papers, finished it ALL in 3 weeks, downsized it to 5 4" binders. Tossed SO many papers! Then tackled my email that was horrendous-main email out of 4 emails had over 83k emails. 43k emails alone in the inbox of just that ONE email and at least 40k emails in the junk/spam folder. I did all the decluttering in 2018 (Mar-Nov. 2nd 2018-including having AND setting up HUGE yard sale. What didn't sell, I gave to this couple. What they didn't take went to the curb.) Then took a couple months off, in Jan. 2019, did the paper work, finished in 3 weeks. Then did the emails. I did 99.999% of this all by myself. The ONLY thing that 'needed' to be finished was my beloved craft room. 2019-2023 threw huge wrenches my way. Loss of family, friends, depression, etc. Got the patio redone with better shelving for things I'm still wanting to get through from main 'big' declutter in 2018. However, after helping so many others throughout the years, we didn't help ourselves. So things got recluttered. In just this past week last week, I re-decluttered our patio-by myself. Omgosh, seriously, I give this guy props MCM. Seriously because *I* know they crazy amount of work it takes and our house is small. So for just doing our house (redoing it all over again due to helping others for so, so many years), I KNOW how hard it is to do all of this. Many prayers to you, many props to you because you're an Angel to people that surely need it. Stay so, so, sooooooo blessed!!!!!!!!! Seriously, I'm so obsessed with watching your videos. You're such a blessing to so many!!!!! Wish I could pick your brain for small craft room ideas!!!!! (that's the LAST room I need to get done!) We will be taking a LOT to some places to donate more to. I can't wait to clear it out of the way! Thank you AGAIN for all you do for others like this because there needs to be much more folks like you with such compassion!

Until my mother passed away lasat year I was her caretaker for the three years prior. Its just now after 16 months I am starting to be able to clear and clean the house - tiny bit by tiny bit. Thank you for your channel!!!

    Just found your amazing channel. I’m in awe. I love how you combine the hardship with the humor. You crack me up and then you say something profound. You have a gift. We’re retired now and I’m lucky enough to have cleaning girls twice a month. But now I’m wanting to get rid of a bunch of stuff I don’t need or use anymore. Watching your videos makes me want to clean out a closet and get rid of a lot of stuff. I say I don’t want to leave this junk for my kids to get rid of. So glad I found you. You’re a treasure. ❤

There are tons of HOPE attached to everything she brings into the house. Thank you for the support and help you provide. Great video!! I wish I was 6’4”, lol! Love y’all ❤🐾

I LOVE YOUR HONESTY IN THE FACT THAT YOU CAN DO THIS AND IT WONT, "STICK" FOR SOME PEOPLE! You might be tinkerbelles ass kicking cousin, but you speak the ugly truth....sometimes, ONLY SOMETIMES people won't change. And you accept that and do just what you did and just carry on. BECAUSE THE NEXT ONE WILL RISE UP LIKE AN EPIC BATTLE FROM HELL AND BE THE ULTIMATE IN BLINDING APC GLORY!!🎉🎉🎉

    Sue Wolfe- It's wonderful that you see that there is a "cause" for why people struggle with hoarding and don't judge. I agree that they will rebuy things because they can't find what they originally bought. I saw this first hand when my sister and I cleaned out my mother's house and filled a black trash bag with knee-high hose! It was so sad! It's a symptom of a bigger problem. Keep up the great work and dedication in helping others!

      When my mom went into a nursing home for dementia, she thought everyone was stealing her reading glasses. She would buy a new pair every week when I came to take her to breakfast and go shopping. After she passed, the nursing staff collected up all the readers hidden around her room to keep them from being stolen.....

      Give yourself some grace and do as he does while cleaning, tackle one area at a time it doesn't all have to be done in one day and take mini breaks. And I find watching his shows I put it on pause and get up and tackle one thing then watch some more pause the video and go do something else. He gives such good advice on cleaning. My biggest challenges are a love seat that becomes the parking station for everything that comes in the house and my kitchen table tonight while watching this I tackled the love seat and have almost everything put away where it should be and the 2 empty boxes that were sitting on it have been taken out to the recycle can. Blessings to you, you can do this. Anna In Ohio

    What a good person you are, and so compassionate about the reasons behind hoarding. Since the AC was going and the house was so hot, the filter should be checked. It's probably clogged with dust and ash and the unit is struggling.

    I've been putting these on while I clean. We have a large family, and collect clutter. Kids not throwing trash away and actively saving it is a problem. When watching other videos on the Stages of hoarding, the kids all placed the house between a 2 and three (with some rooms being worse). I know my mental health has played a large roll in it's condition and then my husband had an accident that left me his sole carer during months of recovery and that made things worse. I've been working on my kitchen for two days and it's almost clean. Over 20 man hours to get it to where it is and it's just one room. It's exhausting and embarrassing, Thank you for the compassion you have for people like me. I know I have hoarding tendencies and habits from a lifetime of abuse and poverty. I'm a work in progress.
