  • Southern Africa has several species of weaver birds that literally weave the most intricate nests. The male does all the work. If a female gets interested but then refuses the nest he spends days building another one.

Building a nest = planning, the bird is capable to plan, and gather what it needs, for specific tasks.
But the knots tying.. that my friends, you have no argument to tell me that is not high brain function.

Victor I lived in Johannesburg for a year and taught biology there. During that time I attended ornithology seminars at Witwatersrand University. One of the professors there gave his ornithology graduate students an assignment to build a nest out of grass like a weaver bird. None of them were able to make anything nearly as good as a weaver bird could.

PS are you still in Johannesburg and if not where you stationed just curious if you do any bird watching

@@Victor-my8pm I've spent a lot of time watching them build nests in Kruger. They don't use a whole grass leaf but instead tear off long thin strands which they weave obviously with just their beaks. Only the males build nests. When they finish a female comes and inspects it and either moves in or rejects it. Some males build more than one nest a year because of that rejection. Not in Johannesburg now. In the U.S. but we go to South Africa every few years to go to Kruger. A wonderful way to see all the African wildlife you could ever want to see on a budget, as compared to the fancy and very expensive traditional African safari. Check out sanparks.org. In most species of bird, the female alone builds the nest. In many of the rest, the job is shared - either equally, or with one parent bringing the materials, and the other in charge of construction. However, for some birds, nest-building is part of the male's efforts to attract a mate
