Wow this was an interesting video. You dropped your CRT SS 9900, thought there was something wrong with the radio but in fact the problem was a faulty EBAY power supply which you bought two for 30 pounds. Yet you void the warranty sticker on your Radio and you trying to fix that damn power supply! Just throw away the power supply and call it a faulty ebay power 15 pound loss. I hope others see this video too. I gave it a like. This was a funny video! 😃
Hi fred I always change those fuse holders for the inline car blade fuses as I've had the heat expand the fuse clips causing the cables to heat up and the power flicker causing low voltage, keep up the good work fred from a fellow cber from 79.
Very interesting video like always. I gave converted all my power cords to 8 gauge red/black oxygen free zip wire with a 15 amp blade fuse at the power supply. I'm using a 30 amp supply made for two way radios. I lose a fraction of the 13.8 volts on full power since I switched to 8 instead of 12 gauge wire.
Known issue,Tim at snake radio says to unhook & rebook that plug inside the radio a few times & add dab of dielectric grease to keep good connection, ,they all corrode up right there after 1 or 2 yrs
Did you ever do any soldering on your SS9900? I've tried to unsolder the diode in my dads to replace it, and for some reason although my soldering iron (45w) melts my solder fine, it won't do anything to the solder that's on the board on the underside of these.
Hi. No ive not had try to unsolder anything on the 9900. If i get a joint that does not want to melt i normally apply some new solder on top which can sometimes help.
Incidentally, I believe there is a warning in the manual not to power down by removing the power source. It probably needs to write to an EEPROM just after you have turned it off from the front power switch on the rig
I’d definitely remove those cheap fuse holders and put something a lot more highly rated to do the job. Those fuses do look a bit nasty for the current they are expected to carry.
Nothing worse than radio troubles especially when you are unaware that it is something besides the radio. Also, when equipment is difficult to get at to repair. That is a real bummer. Interesting video nonetheless Fred. Thanks for posting. At least you are still in radio business . Cqqqqqqqqqqq
hi fred bit of advise managed to getba hold of 9900 cheap due to a fault, im getting lo dc on the screen and the rig and power supply shut down. when yours did this did it shut the power supply off as well. it turn on and received great but as some as you try and transmit it shuts off. i thinking about doing what you did with your power cable as mine is the orginal length with the plugs on. checked inside and nothing stands out on the pcb. i sometimes get the lo dc and sometimes it just shuts off.
Hi Fred been watching your videos and decided to buy CRT SS 9900, for some reason I have SWRH I come on the screen when i key the mike, i did have a look through the menu, now im thinking have i adjusted something, oddley enough it does it on FM on the uk band, would a resest sort this out .
Hi Fred - apologies if this is slightly off topic - seeing that you are abit of a whiz with the CRT radios. I have a SS7900, when I work the UK40, I see the power output of the radio to be lower on channel 1 than on channel 40, same SWR almost (about 1:1.2). All at the same output power setting of course. this is with a small vertical Sirio signal keeper for now. I have just returned to radio after 25 years absence so consider me a newbie. TBH ive not come across that. First thing i would say is SWR. If you have a dummy load i would try that. I would try it on the other modes AM and SSB etc and see if its the same.
Great video but this is why I say buy the right PSU and the right power cables I have never run mine full power I use a kicker and it gets hot and it has a fan on it and the radio just gets warm but you found the fault

Totally different mic. The 6900 mic feels like a childs toy. Ive never had to take the 9900 mic apart or play with it as ive always had very good audio reports so i dont know if it has foam.
Hi Fred, You need a larger power supply for a start, I would say at least a 40 Amp one with a fan to keep it cool, Surprised your radio runs up to 100 watts on ssb, No fan in radio to keep it cool, The power lead is not man enough enough for the job The spade connectors you have fitted are to small & not insulated. Change the power supply & power cable & you should be ok,
Hi. Yes the PSU unit is very close to its max. When we tested the 9900 just before christmas it pulled a max of around 15-16 amps at around 100 watts SSB. The power cable is 20 amp. I think a 40 amp PSU is nice to own but prob an overkill for the 9900.
Best increase the wire gauges reduce all those fuses you only need one fuse at the power sources, check a video with BBI on what extra fuses and wire can do

CRT 9900 its a very good Radio but they do get HOT heat sink Any idea how to keep it cool mite try some fans I think CRT should made these,s radio with Fans to keep cool i don,t run the radio on FULLPOWER but it still get very Hot ? SSB ok just FM

Fred,,,I’ve got an issue with my 9900,,,,,a code comes up saying DC HI. any clues? I have it plugged into my cigarette lighter, 10 amp fuse in cigarette adapter...what do you think?
Ive only seen the DC LOW warning myself which meant the voltage to the radio was low. I would guess (nothing in the manual) that DC HI might mean the radio is getting more than 13.8v. A lot of cars can charge at over 14v with the engine running.
@@CB-RADIO-UK I didn't think of that....the car was running too. What I might do is charge my spare car battery up and wire it directly to it. Then save for a PSU for the cold winter nights !!!

The power supply from Mascot can sell for over £200 there not that bad. No It was my all my fault for yanking the whole set up off the sofa arm a while ago and pulling all the cables. It broke the speaker in the 9900 but i fixed that. Seems like it damaged the PSU.

Iam not keen either. I prefer the blade type holders.

Yes Andy problems can drive you nuts esp when they do not occur all the time. Least i know the cause even if its a tough fix.

Mine just used to cut out when you turned up the power. Some times got a DC LOW warning also
Quality PSU always the right way to go better to have more Amps than even or less, all mt PSU are (4) 25, 2 -35 and one 60

Hi. Best to check all your coax plugs for any short circuits. I would also check the SWR tune on the antenna.

Yes that would work. I only really need one neg feed from the supply. I am prob going to swap over to a 30 amp supply soon anyway.

Yes a few run a burner with the 9900. It does get hot for sure.

I think it was if you unplugged the longer lead you still had one fuse in line.
Why not make a jumper from the second connector from the right to the bad on the far left?

No prob not. There the only ones that fit inside the terminal connector block though. I am going to use the 30 amp supply soon.

Mine has just developed a fault where it has low or now power on FM and AM intermittent.. SSB is fine.... Bloody thing
