Thank you Dr. for this deeper context of Jesus’ conversation with Nicodemus. I’m sure it deeply impacted Nicodemus when on the day of Pentecost Peter told the crowd to repent and be baptized after they asked “What shall we do?” He had just informed them they had killed the Messiah. Their question indicates they “believed” both their sin and their acceptance/confession of Jesus’ identity. Those mass baptisms on that day had a profound effect on the whole city and Judaea. I also find it interesting that every conversion in Acts involves water baptism. Paul says Israel was baptized into Moses at the Red Sea(I Cor. 10), and he also says we are baptized into Christ thus becoming His spiritual seed (Galatians 3:27). How wonderful!

John 3:5 says we must be born of water AND the Spirit to enter the kingdom. If being born of water is Israeli ethnicity, then how can Gentiles be born of water? How can Gentiles enter the kingdom? The parallel verse given immediately after this verse is, "That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit" The parallelism strongly suggests that the water refers to flesh. Also, this is Jesus responding to the misunderstanding of Nicodemus' thinking that "born again" is referring to a re-birth of flesh by reentering his mother's womb. So the context of the immediate answer involves a birth of flesh. I think that in this case, context is king.

@@cbailey1978 Chris, I really doesn't matter WHAT you find odd. What "Born of water and of spirit" means in John 3:5 is blindingly clear in context in the very next verse. Here is the whole thought: John 3: 3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?
5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
Jesus could NOT be clearer. In verse 6 Jesus explains that "born of water" means a fleshly biirth as Nicidemus clearly understood in verse 4 as being born of a woman's womb. AND amazingly "born of Spirit" means, wait for it, born of Spirit. There is NO reference to baptism, NO reference to the Red Sea. YOU may think it fits. Heiser may think it fits but Jesus does not. Yes, Jesus is saying that in order to be saved you DO first have to exist, that is be naturally born, and "be born agai" by being indwelt by the Holy Spirit. Jesus then procedes to tell Nic HOW to be "Born of the Spirit" by believing on HIM. John 3:16

The fact that other stupid people hold your stupid view does not change anything. I expressed Jesus' view of the passage. Exactly why is Jesus' view condescending? Is it my job to stroke your poor wounded ego which probably gets deflated a whole lot? @@cbailey1978 Jesus said," That which is born of the flesh is flesh. That which is born of the Spirit is spirit." Jesus is simply using a parallelism to the birth of flesh. The requirement is to be born AGAIN. The thief on the cross was not baptized. Yet he was/is with Christ in Paradise. There is not a requirement of water baptism for salvation. Given the opportunity, we should obey and be baptized. But it's not a requirement for entering the kingdom.

Now those rituals and journeys serve as an Anchor point, like a plumb on a plumb line, for understanding the work of the Spirit, the point of reference on the plumb line, in this age and how to co-labor with Him for his purpose. The exodus was not the "re-birth" of the nation of Israel, the exodus was the "redemption", representing the first of the 3 acts God had told Moses He would perform: "I will bring you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. I will free you from being slaves to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgment" (Exodus 6:6). It was after all of Israel as "One Man" accepted the words of the covenant that there was a re - birth, as Moses and the Levites declared to the people: “Pay attention and listen O Israel! This day you have become a people to the Lord, your God” (Deuteronomy 27:9). The generation that came out of Egypt saw the Kingdom (because they were born -again), but did not enter the Kingdom (because they were not born of water and of the spirit). They were not born of water and of the spirit because they did not continue in the covenant, they turned back in their hearts in unbelief. As it is written: "...they entered not because of unbelief" (Hebrews 4:6)
To be born of water and of the spirit is to "continue in the doctrine of Jesus the Messiah. “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord’, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father in heaven” (Matthew 7:21). When a person continues in the doctrine of Jesus the Messiah, he is a disciple indeed (John 8:31), for he partakes of the washing of regeneration by the Word and the renewal of the Holy Spirit.
    Shalom.

I’ve learned a lot from Michael Mike Heiser -
But this is a bit “off”.
He’s teaching that “what if being born of water (and of spirit) - to see the Kingdom “ equates to coming through the Red Sea???
If I heard correctly - Heiser states that “what if born of water alludes to the Exodus event of going through the Red Sea?”
As much as Michael Heiser knows and understands, and as brilliant as Michael is - (I’ve learned a lot from Michael Mike Heiser - so this is not an attack)
But this teaching is a bit “off”.
“Born of water “ is alluding to having come through the FLOOD of Noah’s day
Because only if you were “born of water” in this manner - are you HUMAN - born of Adam
To see the Kingsom you must be an actual human being and born of the Spirit - which makes you reborn. Born of the “second Adam”
And you can’t be “reborn” if you are of serpent seed. God’s Spirit will not dwell among the Nephilim.

Jesus is showing old testament passage where it talks about new birth. Israel is born in Egypt. They were only delivered from there. They didn't born after the Red Sea event. Those israel were born of flesh. They won't see kingdom unless they are born in spirit.
God is the author of it all. Baptism of the spirit will be a new birth. And our sanctification is our water baptism in the spiritual sense.

First that happens to you on earth in the flesh, as your form emerges out of chaos or nothingness. Then it happens to you in the spiritual domain if and when the Lord bequests salvation to you. In this typology, interestingly, blood and fire are symbolically related.

They were in a sense taking the spot light away from God and placing it on their own shoulders seeing as they were so important in their own eyes they assigned unauthorized authority to pronounce laws,. They will need to humble themselves and see that it is God alone who sends the spirit if you ask for it the correct way. You can’t take it, it must be received as a gift. That is because it had nothing to do with the Exodus and little to do with baptism. Mike is sometimes right but this is not one of them. He is taking something very simple and making it hard. Jesus is talking about two births not two baths, and even Nicodemus understands that much. Mike comes around most of the way at the end. Being born a Jew OR to Christian parents does not save you. You must have a second birth by choosing to repent and submit to Jesus as God, Boss, and Savior and being baptized by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit as a result of that submission. The first birth is natural childbirth, not water baptism nor a symbolic passing through the Red Sea. The Israelites did not even get wet in the Red Sea. And John's water baptism was not symbolic of the Exodus either. It symbolized repentance, submission, and washing away sins. We still err in thinking there are still 2 baptisms because we read Mark 1:8 through the lens of tradition. John plainly says that Jesus' baptism is NOT of water but rather of Spirit alone. Paul in Eph 4:5 says there is only one baptism.

It was-and is-said that when a person comes up from the waters of the mikveh, they are ‘like a person born again.’ This is why Jesus was astonished that a Pharisee like Nicodemus wouldn’t get the reference.
I understand how Dr. Mike is trying to connect this with the New Covenant, and the need for salvation beyond ‘Torah keeping’ and Jewish ethnic identity, but he’s missing some of the most important paradigms here. It’s ALL ABOUT Israel. We Gentiles, upon entering the New Covenant, are ADOPTED INTO Israel.

There is no reason to give water in Jn.3:5 a foreign meaning. It wasn't until Calvin who was the first to give it a foreign meaning and even admitted to it.
Nicodemus had "rejected the counsel of God not being baptized of John" (Lk.7:29).
But for those who submitted to John's baptism, Jesus promised would "go" into the kingdom (Mt.21-31-32).
Keeping in context where born of water is baptism, Jesus continued to explain, "that which is born of the flesh is flesh," is the baptismal ceremony when our bodies/flesh is baptized, which is visible. Were born of the Spirit is invisible, as the blowing of the wind, the reception of the Spirit, the forgiveness of sins.
Peter does a wonderful job in explaining how one is born of water and Spirit.
"Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:
Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever" (1Pt.1:22-23).
Peter is speaking to Christians, those who have obeyed the gospel (Mk.16:16).
First notice our souls are purified when we obey the truth, through the Spirit.
Not when we believe, but when we obey the truth. Being born again by the Word of God.
The Holy Spirit works on our hearts through the Word of God, when we obey the truth, our souls are purified/forgiven.
So, when Jesus was warning Nicodemus, the Holy Spirit was working through his words, the truth.
If Nicodemus heeded Jesus warning and was baptized that night or the following day, he was born again.
"Unless a man is born of water (baptism/obedience) and of the Spirit (through the Word of truth), he cannot enter into the kingdom of God."
    (See Acts 11:14).
So many people are confused thinking that born of the Spirit is either Holy Spirit Baptism, or receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Later on Pentecost is when Nicodemus would enter the kingdom and receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
The Baptism of the Holy Spirit is a different subject.

Wow - thank you Heiser! I beleive you are on to something here, the exodus is for sure a connection Nicodemus should have made, and the making of a people through water is very much related to baptism as well! With all due respect (and I really do mean that), where in either Christian, or Jewish writing is that interpretation ever provided? Where do the rabbis say that the Exodus was the birth of Israel? What ancient (or modern for that matter) Christian scholars write that your interpretation of both the Exodus event, and Jesus word's to Nicodemus, are related in some way? You assert a connection, but as far as I can tell, demonstrate no Biblical or Historical evidence to support it? I like the theory that it's talking about the resurrection. Now we are sons of man, born of a woman and dust. At the resurrection we are born again, born of the spirit of God and water becoming sons of God. For Nicodemus to see the 2nd coming of Jesus and the kingdom of heaven that he brings with him, he would need to be resurrected from the dead.

    • @telesharp
      @telesharp 3 года назад

I agree. In verse 10 Jesus chastises Nicodemus for being a "teacher of Israel" and not knowing about the need to be "born again" to enter the kingdom. Where in the Old Testament does it speak of being "born again" with regard to a spiritual conversion experience? If "born again" really means a spiritual conversion experience, then Jesus comes across as a real Jerk in expecting Nicodemus to have known where in the Old Testament it's taught when it's not really there. But if "born again" is really about the resurrection, then in Isaiah 26:19 (ESV) we read, "the earth will give birth to the dead." This is in the immediate context of a pregnant woman metaphor about the resurrection. Nicodemus was a Pharisee. Isaiah 26 is the most explicit (and the first) OT text that teaches about the resurrection. Nicodemus, being a Pharisee, should have recognized "born again" from Isaiah 26. But to enter the kingdom it's not just a matter of being resurrected. It's a matter of being resurrected into what Paul calls a "spiritual body" in his resurrection chapter of 1 Corinthians 15. I think Paul is referring back to the words of Jesus in using the term "spiritual body." Daniel 12:2 echoes and expands upon Isaiah 26. "Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake..." "Many" means not all. Of those who are resurrected, some are resurrected to everlasting life. Others are resurrected without everlasting life. "Many" means that some are not resurrected. In these OT context verses, Jesus is saying that you must be born again into a "spiritual body" of everlasting life to enter the kingdom.

Because baptism by water,(burial in water) is the instruction by Peter in Acts, along with repentance, it seems consistent that baptism is the water part of the birth our Lord was teaching. Noah was saved by water which represents baptism, which now saves us, 1 Peter 3:21, Israel was saved through water, by going into the Red Sea on dry ground , they were all baptized together, into Moses, not Jesus. 1 Corinthians 10:2. We are instructed to be baptized into Jesus, and we will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, which is the new birth. We rise to walk in newness of life, because in baptism we are buried into death, to put off our earthly self and put on Jesus, who is our life. -- why make it complicated. Repent and be baptized every one of you and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. -- born from above. Acts 2:38

    What if....
the water IS actually referring in total context to baptism, in which Jesus Himself modeled for the people, especially since we are given the understanding that the Pharisees and "experts" in the law "rejected God's plan for themselves" because they rejected John's call of repentance through baptism? (See Luke 7:30)
This is especially likely since the convo took place between Jesus and Nicodemus, the Pharisee....
AND at the end of that same chapter in John 3, baptism is referred to there for its specific relevance in this, as well as the first three verses of chapter 4 referring to Jesus getting away for a while because He knew the Pharisees were actually seeing His own disciples baptizing more Jews than even John was.

Maybe we should also consider the interpretation of the intelligent, zealous Christians who lived closer in time to the apostles (like within a generation or two). Here are some 2nd century quotations all before 200 A.D. taken from the Ante-Nicene Fathers collection which all involve the verses in question (John 3:3 & John 3:5) or allusions to them:
Justin Martyr: "I will also relate the manner in which we dedicated ourselves to God when we had been made new through Christ; lest, if we omit this, we seem to be unfair in the explanation we are making. As many as are persuaded and believe that what we teach and say is true, and undertake to be able to live accordingly, are instructed to pray and to entreat God with fasting, for the remission of their sins that are past-we praying and fasting with them. Then they are brought by us where there is water, and are regenerated in the same manner in which we were ourselves regenerated. For in the name of God the Father and Lord of the universe, and of our Saviour Jesus Christ, and of the Holy Spirit, they then receive the washing with water. For Christ also said, 'Except ye be born again, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.'….And for this [rite] we have learned from the apostles this reason: since at our [physical] birth we were born without our own knowledge or choice, by our parents coming together, and were brought up in bad habits and wicked training; in order that we may not remain the children of necessity and of ignorance, but may become the children of choice and knowledge, and may obtain in the water the remission of sins formerly committed, there is pronounced over him who chooses to be born again, and has repented of his sins, the name of God the Father and Lord of the universe (he who leads to the laver the person that is to be washed calling him by this name alone)…And this washing is called illumination, because they who learn these things are illuminated in their understandings. And in the name of Jesus Christ, who was crucified under Pontius Pilate, and in the name of the Holy Ghost, who through the prophets foretold all things about Jesus, he who is illuminated is washed. (c.160 A.D., ANF Vol. 1, p. 183)
Irenaeus: "'And dipped himself,' says [Scripture], 'seven times in Jordan.' It was not for nothing that Naaman of old, when suffering from leprosy, was purified upon his being baptized, but [it served] as an indication to us. For as we are lepers in sin, we are made clean, by means of the sacred water and the invocation of the Lord, from our old transgressions; being spiritually regenerated as new-born babes, even as the Lord has declared: 'Except a man be born again through water and the Spirit, he shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.'" (c.180 A.D., ANF Vol. 1, p. 574)
Theophilus: "Moreover, the things proceeding from the waters were blessed by God, that this also might be a sign of man's being destined to receive repentance and remission of sins, through the water and laver of regeneration-as many as come to the truth, and are born again, and receive blessing from God." (c.180 A.D., ANF Vol. 2, p. 101)
Clement of Alexandria: "He [Jesus] thus wishes us to turn ourselves again and become as children who have come to know the true Father and are reborn through water by a generation different from birth in the created world." (c.195 A.D., ANF Vol. 2, p. 397)
Tertullian: "…the prescript is laid down that 'without baptism, salvation is attainable by none' (chiefly on the ground of that declaration of the Lord, who says, 'Unless one be born of water, he hath not life')…" (c.198 A.D., ANF Vol. 3, p. 674-675)
Tertullian: "For the law of baptizing has been imposed, and the formula prescribed: 'Go,' He saith, 'teach the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.' The comparison with this law of that definition, 'Unless a man have been reborn of water and Spirit, he shall not enter into the kingdom of the heavens,' has tied faith to the necessity of baptism." A Jew is one from the southern kingdom (which only included the tribe of Judah and Benjamin, and technically Benjamites, are not Jews, but their division of land was within the kingdom of Judah. I know Dr. Heiser knows this, so presumably he is just using common reference, but this perpetuates error in thinking and Biblical understanding. The northern kingdom consistent of ten tribes, and YHWH divorced them because of their adultery (the extent of it - every single one of their kings was rebellious).

How many other what if's can we come up with. What if it refers to all the water bound up in the clouds and when the temperature changes they birth all that water to the earth. John 3:6 the verse after Jesus says you must be born of water and the spirit, say flesh gives birth to flesh and the Spirit gives birth to spirit. What if flesh giving birth to flesh refers to being born of water, would that not be the most obvious meaning. What about those of us that didn't have the opportunity to be part of the Exodus. All of us have been born into this world and have participated in sinning against God and therefore will die, but because God loves us he has made it possible to have a restored relationship with God by being born of His Spirit when we believe in the one God sent who is Jesus Christ. That is the important part of the conversation with Nicodemus. This idea seems to be the product of a fertile imagination. I read a number of comments where people are so enamored with this what if that they think all their friends must be enlightened with this new what if truth. Seems like Christians today are looking for new ideas to tickle their ears. I'm not suggesting that this idea is a dangerous heresy, it's just silly.

What if born and of water refers to our common origins, not just of Israel but of humanity (thus of all peoples)? “Gen: 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters… 6 And God said, “Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.” 7 So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. And it was so.” The deliverance of the “nation” is limited to “the nation” as was Jesus’ primary/immediate mission; but I am a Gentile three time over by heritage … I belong to “Adam1” as do “all” … so I think it wise to shake the shackles of the nation if we are going to preach the Gospel to the nations.

It seems like a bunch of the commenters disagree with you. Many of them don't think that the Exodus is a biblical picture of a carnal rebirth event.

Some of you might find this to be interesting, which are two replies I wrote a few days ago to two different people, the first being a false prophet whose RUclips name is "Prophet Bradley" who said in his defensive and argumentative reply: "I AM CHOSEN AND ANOINTED BY GOD ALMIGHTY." The second is a reply I made about an hour later to a lady named Kelly Powell who said she believes that the spirit of Elijah has been poured out. Here's my (edited) reply to "Prophet Bradley":
Prophet Bradley ~ So, you're "CHOSEN AND ANOINTED BY GOD ALMIGHTY" eh? That doesn't equate seeing as how you're posting religious videos on RUclips, which is a Satanic medium like TV that has been set up by the kingdom of darkness overlords (aka fallen angels/principalities per Ephesians 6:12 in the King James Version) for the purpose of deceiving and controlling millions of Christians who are devoid of spiritual discernment (people like yourself for example).
About four years ago a Christian prophet ( a real one) posted a comment in reply to a RUclips video that was posted by a so-called 'prophet' saying that the Lord had just recently said to him:
"No Christian prophet will post a video on RUclips, or will allow himself to be interviewed in any RUclips video, or will go on TV for any reason."
In case you may have some difficulty figuring it out, what this means is that all of the so-called 'prophets' who are posting videos on RUclips are false prophets (people like yourself for example).
The reason Christian prophets (real ones) are so often ignored, opposed, ridiculed, vilified, rejected, and sometimes killed, is because their messages are so opposite of the sweetsie-sweet and nicie-nice 'prophecies' so many Christians have been being weaned on for years and years and have become addicted to. You can tell the truth of that by reading the comments to the false prophets' worthless videos.
Sometimes when I look through the comments people post throwing roses at the false teachers and false prophets and lauding them to the skies, it almost makes me wonder if most Christians in Western Culture have lost their minds (besides having lost their spiritual discernment long ago, or never had it to begin with).
You're obviously totally convinced that you're anointed by the Holy Spirit. You're delusional. The spirit you're dealing with, who you think is the Holy Spirit, is in fact a religious spirit who has been carefully groomed by the kingdom of darkness overlords to know how to mimic the Holy Spirit, and you have swallowed the deception hook, line, and sinker.
The worst thing about it is that the religious spirit controlling you has rights to blind you spiritually so that you can't be told about your spiritual condition. In other words, you're permanently stuck in one hell of a mess spiritually. I'd hate to be in your shoes. End of my reply to him.
Here's my (edited) reply to Kelly Powell:
Kelly Powell ~ Dear Kelly, I assume you meant to say "Spirit of Elijah move poured out..." If you think that then you've obviously never seen an outpouring of the Holy Spirit.
You might find this to be interesting (probably not, but oh well):
One night back in the fall of 2017 at around 11:00 in the evening right as I was getting ready to turn off the light and lie down to go to sleep, I prayed and asked the Lord to please send the end-time outpouring of the Holy Spirit, and he immediately replied to me speaking to me in my spirit and he said:
"Many of my people are praying and asking me to send renewal, but when the outpouring comes they aren't going to like it."
That was all he said. I waited to hear if he would say more but he didn't. But he did open my understanding to understand that the reason they aren't going to like it is because it is going to be so totally different than the milquetoast spiritual atmosphere they've been being acclimated to for most of their lives (and which they love) that they won't be able to relate to it and will be afraid of it and will reject it. Also because with much Holy Spirit power comes much spiritual responsibility, and even though hardly any of them would admit it, most Christians want nothing to do with serious spiritual responsibility.
With their ears itching profusely (per 2 Timothy 4:3-4 in the King James Version) they opt to run to 'professionals' (i.e. so-called 'prophets') to do for them what they should be doing for themselves spiritually which leaves them totally powerless spiritually. Plus the outpouring will expose where everyone is at spiritually, and most Christians want none of that.
The end-time outpouring of the Holy Spirit (that is foretold in scripture) is going to be so radically powerful that most Christians won't be able to relate to it and will be afraid of it and will reject it. That is exactly what happened to millions of American and Canadian Christians during the mid-90's outpouring of the Holy Spirit (what became known as "The Toronto Outpouring of the Holy Spirit"). It was so much more powerful than anything they had ever seen before that it frightened them and they rejected it (and many of them vilified it saying it was "Of the Devil" thus blaspheming the Holy Spirit and possibly sealing their fate).
Then after they rejected it they went on with no anointing of the Holy Spirit on their lives to engage in all sorts of religious soul power do-gooder agendas to try to compensate for the feeling of spiritual powerlessness they were feeling (on a subconscious level mostly). But what they inadvertently succeeded in doing was to create the spiritual atmosphere (vacuum) that made it easy for the religious spirits to walk into and to prop up this battalion of false teachers and false prophets on RUclips. It's all very sad. End of my reply to Kelly.
One last thing, having to do with the prophecy the Christian prophet posted denigrating and exposing RUclips:
About seven years ago on a hot summer day at around 2:00 in the afternoon I came in the house and started digging around in my desk drawers looking for a piece of paper with someone's phone number on it (I think maybe it was my auto mechanic's phone number), and as I was digging around in one of the drawers, out of the blue the Lord spoke to me in my spirit and he said:
"Prophecy isn't for everyone. Most Christians say they believe in prophecy, and they think they do, but they don't really."
That blew my mind because at that moment I wasn't thinking about anything having anything to do with spiritual things.

Dr. Heiser stopped too soon with John Chapter 3. Verse 22 is the punch line verse to Jesus's conversation with Nicodemus. While there are lots of parallels in the Bible, verse 22 makes it clear what Jesus was explaining to Nicodemus. In verse 22 we are told Jesus took his disciples to a remote area with lots of water to baptize them and spend time with them. We see in John Chapter 4 that the disciples then began carrying out the baptisms in water. In the last chapter of Matthew Jesus gives a very clear set of instructions to his disciples. 1. Go and teach everyone 2. Make disciples baptizing them into the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit 3. Teach them to keep these commands. The book of Acts is the record of disciples carrying out this set of instructions. In every instance of conversion the people were baptized in water. Romans 6 and I Peter 3 explain what takes place during water baptism. No difficult to understand hidden meanings. If we do what Jesus said to do he promises to be with us. The opposite is also true, if we don't keep Jesus's commands we are on our own.

I'm also thinking that in a like way, what Jesus is saying also parallels the creation story and the need that arose when Adam and Eve sinned. That first fleshly birth was not enough. The interruption of sin resulted in being blocked by God from partaking of the tree of life. Mankind's only prospect at that time was death.
But God intervened by offering a second birth - one that takes place after death takes its toll. Similarly, Jesus, after He died and rose again, offered a new breath of the Spirit into mankind to rekindle a second, lasting birth.
Just riffing off some parallel thoughts that occurred to me. Mike's perspective is more in line with the text and the Nicodemus encounter, I believe. Nonetheless, the parallelisms in the imagery seem to echo in waves through various parts of the Bible.

That’s all he was saying all that other nonsense is just that nonsense. I love Mike he was a good man, but he had the bad habit of interpreting the New Testament through the Old Testament just like other people try to interpret the Old Testament through the New Testament, he had the opposite law because he was an old testament scholar so I get it here in many other places. For i have come to fulfill them." - Yeshua, that's what we are talking about, and is it not saying that you still need to strive to follow the laws and too follow the new? I mean to do every law is pretty hard if not impossible for most, for all but 1/3rd roughly most likely. But if they are not destroyed then they are still in play and you should attempt to do them as much as you can should you not? which is why i use strive meaning to try to your utmost ability, I've never really heard no with sound reasoning I've heard no with belief or feelings, which should not solely control man, But its why i ask because i hope you can give that satisfactory answer at some point. The closest i have caught you to it , is your belief which i respect and i believe its not unfounded nor wrong, but yet their is the law still existing and demanding to be fulfilled? The law is still existing and will continue to exist until this present heaven and earth are taken away (Matthew 5:17-20). The Jew according to the flesh is bound to observe the law still. Even Paul the Apostle in making his defence to the accusations brought against him said “I have committed no offense against the law of the Jews or against the temple...." (Acts 25:7-8). Observing the law however does not mean that one is justified by it for justification comes only by faith, as it is written, "...the just shall live by his faith" (Habakkuk 2:4). The gentile according to the flesh is not bound by the covenant at Sinai but is grafted into the commonwealth of Israel by the covenant by the blood of Jesus the Messiah. The gentile according to the flesh is thus not bound by the carnal commandment - touch not and taste not (Colossians 2:21) which are only shadows of the reality that is Christ.
      Shalom.

If you mean ethnic Hebrews, well it would if it were true . Fortunately this is speculative nonsense which a man of Heiser's age and supposed maturity should not be engaging in. What Jesus was plainly saying was the being born to religous parents - being born a Hebrew or of Christian parents does not save you. You need two births - one as a human being (water) and one as a repentant believer in Jesus as Lord, god , and Savior (spirit.) Nicodemus "a ruler of the Jews" came to Jesus apparently wanting to know when the Messiah was going to run off the Romans and put the Sanhedrin in charge. He starts off with flattery. Jesus saw his heart and turned to him and told him he needed to repent and start over like a newborn or he was not even going to see the kingdom of God much less rule it. Nic was not happy and pretended not to understand and Jesus gave him both barrels. Jesus makes it clear that natural "birthright" is not enough. Salvation belongs to "whosoever believes in him".

Translators of the Bible have obscured the fact that The Church was established at Sinai. Not everyone there accepted it: many called and few accept. The new covenant according to Jeremiah 31 is the re-establishment of the United Kingdom of Israel or the Kingdom of God (both the house of Judah aka Jewish believers and the House of Israel aka Gentile believers. The Torah is still part of the new covenant as it says in Jeremiah that the Torah will be written on the hearts. Jesus said he didn't come to abolish the law (Hellenistic Jews wished he did come for that lol). Jesus said only law abiding citizens will enter the Kingdom of God. Lawless people will be outside the United Kingdom of Israel. This has been mucked up by Christians and Jews for centuries. Partial blindness. The Law doesn't save but obedience to the Law gives you your inheritance in the new Kingdom of Israel with Jesus as King. Once established, Israel will finally be the Light to the Nations. Christianity aka Roman Christianity redefined everything Jesus spoke about into a new religion which should never have happened. I wish more people understood this and stopped fighting because the gospel is a Gospel of Peace and reconciliation. So, yes being born again means you are reborn into Israel through the Spirit not ethnicity

The only problem here is an idea that you can interpret God of the Old Testament with the New Testament... Can't explain bananas describing them with apples. There are fundamental differences in belief, practice and interpretations between two scriptures. Judaism does not acknowledge Jesus as a Son of The God, but as one of the prophets. There by suggesting, Christian beliefs and scriptures are revolving around false god, one who has no authority. Which puts the New Testament validity in question. If two scriptures were not to essentially clame to worship the same God, you could easily make conclusions you enjoy to get, without having to confront obvious. Three religions claiming the same God, each teaches different beliefs. Except for both Judaism and Islam, Jesus was a prophet, not the Son of God. My conclusion is, either Jesus is a Son of God, and both Judaism and Islam are wrong about it, or Jesus is not a Son of God, or is a Son of some other God... What is it?
