Lincoln Q&A - Full Interview (2012) - Steven Spielberg, Daniel Day-Lewis Movie HD
As the Civil War nears its end, President Abraham Lincoln clashes with members of his cabinet over the issue of abolishing slavery.
Daniel Day-LewisHe is more than an extraordinary actor, he is a very decent human being....
He's a once in a lifetime kind of guy. One of the few actors I feel like you could actually sit down and have a beer & conversation with, pure class & quality to the core.
He's one of the best method actor out there!
@@yengsabio5315 but he's not a method actor, He said that and actors who worked with him that were method actors said too... its similar, but different.
Hopefully he will make another movie because he is the best of the best and could still make many more.
@@umiami85 he’s moved on. He’s pursuing his love of being a cobbler and other crafts. He’s a man of so many interests
just watching this, with all the respect to Spielberg and his work, Daniel somehow just grabs my attention each time he talks, not as an actor, but as person whose clearly thought deeply about life, I just love it
I couldn’t agree more. He’s endlessly interesting
@@cindyinnew😮xoxolvox,u
Dan day lewis is such and interesting man. Even the way he speaks is like a melody. Its a privilege to watch him perform his art. So much density and infinity.
He's one of the best method actor out there!
Daniel Day Lewis is one of the best actors to ever grace the camera and screen, and one of my personal favorites of all time.
After watching There Will Be Blood and My Left Foot I am convinced that he is the best actor alive. There certainly are no one like him.
Int humble opinion he’s the best that’s ever lived
Couldn't agree more a complete genius
For sure. The very best of the best
I can’t even think of any jokes to answer this, he is the one.
Daniel Day Lewis is so convincing on screen because you know nothing about his personal life.
"never let them see behind the curtain"
12:32 the way spielberg looked away when Daniel says i didn't know my father very well...you can see he's gone thorugh same
I can totally still see Lincoln in DDL. Contemplative, stable guy who puts a lot of thought into everything he says.
Oh they're both so awkward (and passionate about the project), what a lovely interview!
I've only recently noticed how Daniel Day-Lewis is an inspiring character! I love listening to his well-thought out responses that reflect much wisdom and life experience. Too bad he's retired and I don't think he was fond of making a lot of interviews. :(
He's looked pretty much the same for twenty years lol
i've watched the movie 100 times or more. The monument of a man of Lincoln presents a moral certainty on human issues and a gentility not found today
I love Daniel's "Um"!
Great movie. I think Spielberg fudged the ending though. Should have ended with Lincoln walking down the hallway.
Agreed, with a slight amendation (appropriately enough) - Walking down the hallway with that last speech playing in the background, because Lincoln's words are as memorable as his iconic figure. The film didn't need the whole 'drama' of his death, which really wasn't made all that relevant to the story itself. It could have been included in a text-only denouement instead, like in a lot of historical films.
His death was the end of the story. It needed to be shown
there will be blood is probably DDL`S BEST PERFORMANCE...MIND BLOWING
What was “mind blowing” about it?
@@ErnestoMike It was a great performances of all time. That is what is mind blowing about that.
@@krishshautriya5170 the greatest performance ever captured on film
This is one of those movies I will be able to watch over and over again for years to come!! Just fantastic film making. The acting is just breathtaking.
Daniel Day Lewis makes most actors look silly. He's on a totally different level partially cause he looks at it like an art form and a unique experience as opposed to being famous and making money. True in any art form.
Imagine if Brando had been such a serious actor.
Pretty cool to know that Daniel Day-Lewis played Lincoln as well as Bill the Butcher. Lets get this civil war crossover
Man, Spielberg's gray matter is still workin'! I think I just sprouted a few new brain cells.
Daniel Day-Lewis was very thought-provoking and articulate during this interview/conversation. Yowsers, he's sitting with the incomparable Spielberg and Day-Lewis is remarkably at ease.
BTW that interviewer rocked
He is absolutely extraordinary in My Left Foot.
Daniel Day Lewis... well, fantastic actor. He made Lincoln freakishly believable.
I loved that movie! Spielberg strikes again! Lovely
Steven is wearing 4 layers of upper body clothing! Must be cold!
Daniel day Lewis, amazing guy, considering he did only 6 movies in last 20 years. Hope we could see more of his likes in screen. I wonder what he does with all these free time.
He lives I guess
Carpentry, motorbikes, racecars, design/building, writing, shoemaking (at one time), running (at one time).
raise three sons, become a carpenter, learn the art of italian bootmaking, grow his family's food (gardener), etc.etc.
He is mainly a stage actor
He has three sons.
I would also recommend In the Name of the Father (and obviously Gangs of New York). Incredible actor.
I absolutely agree! Best actor alive.
I think some of it may be down to him being a method actor. He stays completely in character during the film schedule of a film (being at home etc).
He mentions it in one of his acceptance speeches when he says he's thankful to his wife for putting up living with many different men.
i really liked the answer that mr spielberg gave to the angry person asking why audience is only with teachers and students 37:45.
Awesome presidents awesome portrayal by awesome people = LINCOLN the movie.
fear is a mystery it challenges you to move forward. most of us. voices in a higher register carries better. Abraham Lincoln sounds like an amazing person. i thought War Horse should of won best picture. your most performance based film ever made. sounds like a must see film, everything must come to an end. great interview..
DANIEL DAY IS THE BEST ACTOR OF AMERICAN EMPIRE 😘😘😘
Who cannot see the genius in Spielberg's movie making or in Daniel Day-Lewis's portrayal of Lincoln? My only--yes only--concern in the whole movie is that Day-Lewis's Lincoln used God's name profanely. Reflecting on what scholars have written about Lincoln, I don't find that in keeping with the character of his communication. Though he held himself somewhat aloof from organized religion, he genuinely recognized a providential role of God in his life and in the nation's history.
"Are you predominantly film students or not necessarily?"
"That's good that you're not."
Lol.
What can I say the best film maker and the best actor.. I always thought the best actor was Al Pacino,, but after seeing DDL in Gangs of New York as Bill the butcher an My left Foot.. my lord what performances..just a note; best film ever in my mind Schindler's List...like watching a documentry come to life.suberb film making.
Most phenomenal film to ever exist
Steven Spielberg. The best film maker of all time
Daniel Day Lewis is hot. Was he always so handsome? Wow!
Having read Team of Rivals a couple of times, I must say that I expected more from the movie. However, it has grown on me. The cast is impressive, Spielberg's directing tasteful, and the story (which is about 20 pages in the book) compelling.
Two legends: Steven Spielberg one of the greatest directors ever
I don't think introductions get much better than that.
I love this interview - I love it as an actor, film audience, storyteller & as someone who loves a deep wander back into the historic past. Always enlivened by Lincoln's presidency along with Mary Todd's mind/ambition, as a mother/wife during a life of opposites, I love the choices & details of the film/script. Both Spielberg & Day-Lewis are marvels in their artistic/intellectual process, their own vast & radiant minds. Both, such beautiful men!
My interest is about the Dawn of Our 4’th President Rutherford B Hayes also yet not to compare to Our 16’th President of certain

Thanks i thought i was the only one.I have really only heard great reviews and i firmly believe that almost no one would trash Day-Lewis, Spielberg or Lincoln.I think it was a terrible movie and history shows this was not a turning point for blacks and it took a whole century before they had real rights. So if your decision took a 100 years to take effect would you consider that life altering.A bald Tommy lee hopping into bed w/the maid was the cheapest laugh of all.Script was all over the place.
Perhaps most people who see Lincoln as a hero are wise enough to understand that human beings can be both heroic and flawed. Lincoln's first goal was to preserve the Union. It became clear to Lincoln during the war that ending slavery was not just a moral issue but a necessary goal to ensure Union victory. He did not enslave a nation he united one by ending an economic system based on violence, rape and tyranny.
Ending slavery was just a BS propaganda tool like spreading democracy in the middle east while doing it for oil. Slavery would have ended in a natural way, like it did in the rest of the world, but it was used (later on when the war was already raging) for the justification of killing 2% of the population for defending the tax infrastructure of the Federal government. Wise people understand that politicians are assholes who lie and kill for power.
Ending slavery was a brilliant move. It had multiple motivations. Some were moral implications as articulated by the abolitionist movement, it had foreign policy implications because by making the war about the moral issue of slavery it prevented Britian from aiding the confederacy economically and recognizing them diplomatically. It also struck terror in the hearts of southern slavers who suddenly found themselves with a free population of human beings who they had abused and oppressed for generations.
Like all brilliant political moves it was part BS but more importantly it was part moral decision, part foreign policy move to cut off an alliance between Great Britain and the Confederacy and most brilliant of all WMD against the Confederacy which guranteed a new infusion of soliders and individuals who could provide inside information and intelligence to the Union Army. You are thinking to small to see Lincolns decision so one dimensionally. He was playing chess while the opposition was playing checkers; the man was a brilliant strategist.
GrinnolaAlum He killed 600.000 Americans and destroyed the basic concept that founded America. Since we agree slavery wasn't the motivation we can conclude that the war wasn't started for moral reasons (like every goddamn war). I'm sorry but I refuse to call mass murderers "hero's", be it on the left/ right or the center. Does this mean i endorse slavery? No.
mengelmoesNL The level of hypocrisy among Confederate revisionists never ceases to amaze. It was both immoral and irresponsible for the south to begin a war against an opponent that had more resources and an economy that put them at an advantage. Lincoln did not force them to start the war they made that stupid decision and are responsible for the consequences including the lives lost.
GrinnolaAlum He knew the south would fire if he supplied the fort. A great strategy I'll give him that.
""You and I both anticipated that the cause of the country would be advanced by making the attempt to provision Fort Sumter, even if it should fail; and it is no small consolation now to feel that our anticipation is justified by the result."
Very truly your friend, A. LINCOLN.
About Lincoln he was tall he possibly sounds like . A former famous Singer songwriter: 7 foot tall. A very
Sound deep yet soft spoken tone when he talked. Mr. Peter Steel was laid to rest in New York
declared a righteous man.
True events.
Daniel Day's mannerism reminds me of peter molyneux, except Daniel has a better vocabulary, and is wiser. xD
omygoodness, move your water bottle!!!!!!!!!! It is blocking the movie poster, yikes....doesn't look professional.
Fantastic thanks helps me understand myself abit better the and always the freaky thing when I do indulge in storytelling doesn't the dam thing actually come true but now I'm free and don't feel restricted by myself or others. 😊
Who gives a shit what their political beliefs are? I don't agree with Sean Penn, and I think a lot of what he says is fucking stupid, but out of the actors working today he's probably in the top 4 or 5.
And 'HELLyWEIRD'? What are you, 10?
Dang Daniel Day Lewis is great to watch even outside of film. He's really IMO one of the best of his generation.
Imagine you are to interview Spielberg and DDL about the movie they made called ‘Lincoln’.
What a combo. Make more movies please!
Even written history is interpretive so what was achieved here was a great accomplishment.
Some quite interesting and controversial facts about Spielberg and his movie-making, revealed in a letter from Roger Dommergue (research "Dommergue letter to Spielberg), or here the link:

I don't think that was intentional. LOL You silly guy.
Why am i always expecting american accent from Daniel....
I love Gary Oldman very much, but the only films I have seen him in are The Dark Knight trilogy and Leon: The Professional. He was awesome in that movie. Can't make a decision based on that, though.
Every time i see Steven Spielbeg i think of the pictures i have from my uncle Joe Stoerrle's B25 bomber crew from ww2 were Arnold Spielberg was the navigator on uncle Joe's B25. it's funny how much Steven looks like his dad you would think it was Steven Spielberg standing in the pictures.Just thought i would share this.
Thanks

PROUD NAVY DAD
Steven is a delight director and a very insightful and entertaining interviewee. While Daniel , a great actor without a doubt seemingly disinterested in being interviewed. Just the way he answered the questions...there's always a long pause and kind of ambiguous response. Nonetheless, a great movie!
two classy gentlemen
Why would I ever watch anything to do with salt ? That's unimaginable - I'm not interested in that nonsense - I'll watch it if Ron let's me but I gotta ax nicely so that's not happening - 🤣🤷♂️ maybe if he starts doing that gig more often otherwise he's got no chance - I still think Ron should testify 🤣 that would be hilarious - need a translator - Ron buddy your not getting the embrace - sorry buddy irs not looking good - might have to stay offline - no
Biggie - this is a heartbreaking situation - I wouldn't stay on that path with the glitch nonsense - troubling - Ron I think your people from Florida called today ? Was that you buddy ? Trying to send me emails ? I don't fl email I don't even know how to do email it doesn't interest me in the least bit - In fact probably couldn't pay me enough for any reason or amount to do a single email not one - it's more trouble then it's worth - Daniel a sounds like a soft spoken guy - can't figure out that accent ? British but not ordinary - 🤷♂️ the last of the Mohicans - awesome movie -
Spielberg is looking much older. His films are an astonishing piece of art.
Extraordinary movie!
Note to self (Debord-Lacan): To clock how much time they spend answering "How did you call him, what phone you used, what you felt once the script landed upon your nerve ending of your fingers. How long did it take you to get to the stage every day. Once on set how many people did you talked to, and when did you refrained from talking to them about the script. The words. Ok, what did the script said, and did you have to change some of the phrases. Did anyone screamed fired on the set? How is the ride back to the house you lived in"?
28:20min Note to self (Debord-Lacan): Pentagon protected still paranoiac.
An Englishman playing the greatest AMERICAN president of ever and doing so better then anyone else could've. Strange.
27:18min Note to self (Debord-Lacan): Spielberg, Obama´s genocidal reach gave a speech in a Lincoln memorial, Spielberg said no to cocaine with Reagan.
Steaven your movie is awsome
29:58min Note to self (Debord-Lacan): Standards of sanity: prohibition to speak by yourself. No self-reflexivity allowed if no persons are present.
Sorry Yunjaemin, I wasn't expecting a war movie. I do need to see wounded soliders in the scene where Lincoln rides through the trenches. They all looked very clean and asleep. No war wounds, No dirty blooded uniforms. It looked silly & faked. Slaves are not shown at all in their horrible plight and I'm ONLY talking about 30 seconds of screen time to get this acroos for the viewer. Little Stevie made a TV movie out of what should have been a great film. He failed.
I've just seen the film last night. It was an incredible time. I couldn't recommend it more. Go see it. You'll love it.
I'm only 13 years old so if I forget to mention one or two actors it's just because I either truly forgot about them or I haven't seen enough of them. I personally think Tom Hanks is one of the best actors out there. But Daniel Day is also great he can go from playing heroic (TLOTM) to villainous (GONY). The other thing I wanted to talk about was Brits playing Americans and vise versa. I personally don't mind, I mean if they're a terrific actor and do a terrific job then what's the big deal?
Christian Holferty nobody cares what you are talking about and no need to mention your age(it does not make any sense)
Daniel day Lewis one of the greatest actors ever
11:30 killer advice on fear
I am temporarily paranoid
And ultimately willing to help.
Wonder what would be a film about Ivan The Terrible? With Spielberg and Day-Lewis at hand
17:55min Note to self (Debord-Lacan): Does ET die in the end? He made ET, and Natural Gas vs Oil.
Hi there,Iam sorry and I absolutely didn't mean, what you might have thought of my comment.First let me tell you,Iam a big big Huge Fan of Mr.Spielberg. After your comment,I have realized that my comment sounds other way, than what I supposed to mean. From the past couple of days,I have been seeing some news regarding Mr.Spielberg and DW, which are like getting a bad feeling to me.I really can't say everything,How Iam feeling right now,But to say simply, that daniel knows something, which fans don't.
37:10min Note to self (Debord-Lacan): Boundless Nietzsche: then the chingo guff-waff.
thanks, I'm going to check that one out..
Dont bring political parties in a movie about politics? You're funny. But I agree with you concerning the nature of those parties today in comparison to the past. Lincoln was the progressive of his time & yet the mere thought that a white President from the "Republican" party would do something so monumental for black people may be inconceivable for many younger black people today. Sadly the majority of both parties today are progressive to the detriment of the USA. Evidence is in the spending.
HA , HA , HA i hear ya. My sister can't stand Sally Field. My beef with Hollywood is specific , i just can't stand SOME of those in Hollywood that go out of their way to express a PUSHING & SHOVING IN OUR FACE of their liberal politics.Yes they have a first amendment right to free speech. For me it irritates & takes away my enjoyment of a movie.Wish they would just shut up & entertain us.
Question for British viewers. How prominent is Lincoln in British life? Do you grow up learning about him in history? Just interested in comparing what we know about Churchill with what you learn about Lincoln.
Lincoln is so big... like Churchill is... most Brits would have some appreciation at least of President Lincoln
12:20min Note to self (Debord-Lacan): Two sigs, threats, "cold" and "Tyson".
I agree with your assessment of Hollywood's liberal agenda. When some generally accepted taboo becomes popular among them in private they seek to promote it through the entertainment industry. Obviously, the idea of black people having equal rights under the law was certainly progressive, liberal & taboo for the time, but a movie simply recounting history wouldn't qualify for their agenda today would it? That said, can you offer a modern liberal agenda being pushed in this movie -Lincoln?
Thanks
You say you were "so disappointed"? Were you expecting an action movie? Can you offer an example of a "boring scene" that was "pointless"?
I SUBMIT:
On what fundamental ground did "civiil rights" movement establish its arguements & fight? The 13th Amendment; & although its sad it took almost a 100yrs to get any real rights, it doesnt negate the importance of that REQUIRED first step. This is NOT to say the Civil War itself was required. Britian & other countries ended slavery peacefully.
Peace.
NOT ONE BLACK PERSON!!
Just saw it. Although they didnt discuss the real reason why war started in the first place (as most Civl War movies & shows dont) it was really good & very accurate. Daniel Day-Lewis delivered an excellent performance as usual. Thought it was odd that for such a monumental historical character, Abraham Lincoln - slavery hero, there'd have been at least one black person in such a large audience. I think I know why. Movie reveals Lincoln & Abolitionists where Republicans.
I LOVE movies BUTT i refuse to support the "art" of those in HELLyWEIRD that have a PUSHING & SHOVING IN OUR FACE of their liberal politics For example i refuse to see movies that have -Sean Penn , Susan Sarandon , Tim Robbins , Barabra Streisand, Tom Hanks , Julia Roberts .And behind the camera - Steven Spielberg , Harvey Weinstein , Martin Scorsese.
FAIR POINT
I do similar things with issues & organizations that I dont approve of so I understand & respect that type of action. EXAMPLE: I never purchase or donate money to anything that will directly support a religious entity other than my own.
Now if I cared about HOW every person I paid for a service or product used THEIR money I might never use money again. Therefore the substance of the movie is what I'll be exposed to, not some political banquet where he'll be speaking.
Peace.
Hello , just wanted to say in regards to the people i mentioned i do acknowledge all of them are excellent in regards to the work. I've just reached the point of burnout over those in that world of Hollywood that do have a very open SHOVING & PUSHING in WE THE PEOPLES FACE their liberal political & social point of view. Yes they too are entitled to express their free speech. And i am entitled to withhold my $ to support their "art".
Lincoln was an amazing man, even outside of his presidency. He vowed after an experience of almost fighting to the death with someone he offended, that he would always try to never speak ill of someone and always have kind words for them. I could feel and see that in Daniel as I watched his portrayal. He really made me feel Abe.
If you didn't watch any of his films other than tin tin, then you are dead moviegoer mate,as simple as that. You better not talk about films,Please....

Look Buddy, Did you ever you ever came across a word called "COMPULSION", and an other word that goes by "FREE WILL".Just connect these two words, and all your questions will be answered.Thnx for commenting,Good day pal.
Iam really sorry for the comment and the more I read it, it seems absurd and my stupidity is clearly visible.Iam removing this comment rightaway.Sorry again,it's completely my bad.
"Can you offer a modern liberal agenda being pushed in this movie - Lincoln" This movie was made by Steven Spielberg , he like many other big mouth liberals is outspoken about their liberal politics. He gives financial support to liberal causes. So regardless of the substance of this movie (which i wouldn't be surprised IF there is some history revisionist going on) i won't help to make him richer so as to be able to give more money to liberal politics.
