Kinda hard to get mad at people for making a dogshit side story to a dogshit main story... just marry her off which is her sole responsibility in life to do & that diplomatically solves the problem with a disgruntled neighboring kingdom who have legitimate territorial grievances about land being taken away from them for arbitrary reasons by the ruling foriegn overlord of both.

      It had some heavy handed foreshadowing and some pretty tired tropes - "angry kid won't listen to advisors" "proud leader thinks he is invincible" "rebellious teen that has to go through h*ll to grow up" "old veteran takes on waves of warriors in their prime"
      But if they wanted to tell the story of a woman that fights for her kingdom, they picked the right kingdom, the Shield Maidens of Rohan are canon, they are in the tradition and they follow the story. You have to give credit for not outright crapping all over the lore.

    In the original story, Fréaláf Hildeson is the one that slays Wulf, saves Rohan and rightfully claims the throne at the end. In the movie, he is just like: "Oh, Héra, the throne rightfully belongs to you, but since you don't want it, I'll take it... but it should be you!". The whole "I will marry NO MAN!" thing is supposed to be an echo or foreshadowing of Eowyn's statement "I am NO MAN!" before she kills the king of the Nazgul in Return of the King in LOTR. In the LOTR it had been prophesied that "no man" would kill the Nazgul king so he felt invulnerable in battle. Eowyn, being a woman, was therefore "no man" and she killed him, fulfilling the prophesy.
    Tolkein did the prophesy and revealed fulfillment in LOTR because he didn't like how the prophesy in MacBeth was done and wanted to show how it should be done right. However, in this movie it was just a hamfisted way of saying she'd marry a woman.

    • @jukseri9770

    • @juliansummers7855
      @juliansummers7855 Месяц назад

      @jukseri9770 True, though Eowyn delivered the killing blow. Merry's strike served two purposes - it distracted the Witch-King allowing Eowyn to strike and his sword was imbued with spells that broke the spells binding the Witch-King. I guess since Merry's strike was a necessary pre-condition to his fall it's fair to say they both killed him.

    I've heard people ask, "What movies has Woke ruined?"
    War of the Rohirrim is the ultimate example of how/why Wokeness ruins films.
    There is the outline, a draft of an incredible film outlining the events. The animation is decent, the voice acting is very well done. The primary, inescapable hangup of the film is the decision to center everything around Hera. The last film that I've seen so conclusive ruined by a single decision was 10 Cloverfield Lane.

      @@Oncewaslostbutnowimsaved I agree. 10 Cloverfield Lane predates the massive push for woke/DEI in entertainment. It also has actual character development, with the protagonist starting the film running from her troubles to driving toward danger in order to confront, and end, the problems. I actually really enjoy the film, it was a solid psychological thriller; this woman wakes up in an underground bunker, no idea what's going on, or if she can trust the man who brought her there, or if anything she's being told is actually true. I fully expected the film to end with 'her suspicions were right, it was all a sham' but I never expected the actual twist ending! Yes, she has some heroic luck (the molotov and surviving that 30ft drop) but the film actually used her skills (clothing designer) to make her survival plausible. The film beautifully stoked an atmosphere of paranoia and suspicion and suspense. I would've said the last film so conclusively ruined by a single decision would've been that Star Wars tripe 'force awakens' garbage.

    "I don't want to marry no man"
    In this kind of setting she would be raised with the expectation that she would marry at some point, and it'd be a very rare woman who would not. The very idea that she'd act like some modern woman who denies marriage and family doesn't work if there's nobody there to actually lead her in that direction. This can work in a fantasy setting if its established in that setting, but if you're by default using a medieval (or at least pre-modern setting) then it doesn't make sense.
    Of course people are going to be like "oh so does that mean if she refuses marriage she'll be forced into it?"
    Stop thinking like a person from a modern era. You're not thinking clearly about this at all. For her, the very idea of not marrying wouldn't even be present. In order to think that was even an option she'd have to have someone TELLING her it was an option. And no such people even exist in this setting.
    It can happen by chance; a betrothed dies and no one else comes up, or there's wars that prevent it from happening. But its pretty rare in the context that the option would even present itself. And the girl in question would be raised with a desire for family anyway.
    You can only come up with such an idea if you live in the modern era where its actively promoted.

    They think that by drawing it Anime style, and by putting in Tolkien's name, that will automatically make it good, or at least fool us into thinking it's good. In fact it's the substance of Tolkien that makes his work good, and the substance of anime that makes it good (when it is good). These people can't create anything with substance.

    Completely different from current Western portrayal.

      @talyn7448 Месяц назад +2

      Tolkien's characters didn't marry as children, because he wasn't a creep, so it's not unusual that she's not married yet. Also Tolkien considered the idea of marriage as being almost something sacred in his stories, so he put great emphasis on the couple falling in love and choosing to marry each other. Arranged or forced marriages didn't end well in his stories. So Hera not wanting to marry that douche it's not so weird. What is almost anti Tolkien is her choosing not to marry at all, as those people were seen as having something wrong with them, almost like being cursed in his Universe.

    So, I was invited by one of my friends to go see this on Friday and.... how do I put this? It's not something that felt like it was connected to The Lord of the Rings or the Hobbit..... because it doesn't feel like anything Tolkien would've written. I mean, good grief, I haven't even read half of The Two Towers (first time reading), but from going through The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, they are fairly consistent with their general themes and messaging, regarding self-sacrifice (in spite of not wanting to at times), whereas "Hera" (seriously they couldn't use a more Norse / Olde English sounding name? They screwed up the Tolkien's language with including a Greek Goddess that's known to all? Was Athena too 'on the nose'?) is effectively rebelling against her royal duties and 'girl-bosses' her way out of situations that realistically should've been the end for her.
    Oh, and this was plain boring and predictable. I kept looking at my phone to see what was going on in some of the Discord chats I frequent so I didn't fall asleep.
    As far as the liberal and the gay is concerned, I suppose that could a subtext. It's not explicit enough in the movie from what I did remember; rather it was just BS propaganda aimed at telling girls and women not to get married and have families. This is very antithetical to what Tolkien would have written and believed.. especially as a practicing and orthodox Roman Catholic.

      Haven't seen the movie and don't intend to, but your perspective makes sense to me. If these writers were better, I might wonder if they were trying to copy the lady knight Britomart and her nursemaid Glauce from Spenser's Faerie Queen. Of course, the whole reason Britomart became a knight errant was because she saw the man she would marry in a vision and wanted to help him. Replacing the pro-marriage message of the Faerie Queen with rank feminism, unfortunately, lends a subtext to those archetypal characters that might not have been intentional. I agree with you that the relationship between these two characters probably wasn't meant the way that Jon and Gary at Nerdrotic took it. The movie is enough of a disaster without throwing that in.
