    This is your Sheffield city centre folks, flats, flats and more flats with Travelodge bathrooms, profit over facilities. Zero shops, just takeaways and snide phone shops run by the other team.

      15 minute neighbourhoods are coming. All your local retail parks are there for a reason. Supermarkets that could never get planning permission in certain areas have ended up with 3 within a mile. They're even building a new one opposite Sheffield wednesday ground.

    Unfortunately its now a student city. When they're away, everything shuts, you're a brave man walking around by yourself at night, and I don't like going into town in the daytime.

      The foreign students are deserting Britain too. My brother, a university lecturer, used to boast that education was one of Britain's last great exports. Not any more. Far Eastern students get a better education at home.

    I agree about the 80s but you just picked the wrong day. I went down Sat 14th and it was rammed. I ended up going back to my local as apart from the Alpine bars and the grapes you couldn't get served. Benjamin huntsman they were Queuing down the road. I think it is the students. They have all gone home leaving Town where they live empty.

    I grew up in Sheff, was 17 in 1980. I was definitely a ‘townie’, worked in The Castle Market, behind the bar at Roxy, Leadmill, Stonehouse and drank up West st and in The Limit every weekend. I’m glad I saw it at its best! Only nip in occasionally now, for a meal with the family. I guess over time habits and culture change, it does seem sad!

    It was very busy last Friday before Christmas I was out drinking city centre was packed this video is quite interesting though I was planning on coming out for a couple of drinks Christmas Eve I'm glad I didn't looks absolute crap I reckon next year you should come to Sheffield Friday before Christmas

      I think Christmas Eve has changed and people don’t go out anymore.. I too was down town on the Friday before Xmas and everywhere was packed and jumping. I think ‘Mad Friday’ has taken over from Xmas eve in the same way Halloween has taken over from Bonfire night.

    Bessemers has also been called the fountain bar, houlihans and pig and whistle. Can you remember the pub on West street next to the old red lion, was it Barkers in the 90’s?
    Where code is now was Isabella’s nightclub.
    It’s so sad to see it all now. The ghost of Christmas past. Gangs of lads and lasses, shivering in the cold, laughing and joking, music blaring, lots of banter. A city in ruins.

      ​@@timawells I just did a search and found loads of images of Sheffield at Christmas in the 70's and 80's and the difference is astounding. It actually looked like a thriving and happy atmosphere. And like you said in the video,it resembled the Blackpool illuminationsThat is how I remember it,but I wasn't sure if the rose tinted glasses thing,we tend to have when we look back in time was affecting my memory. It wasnt!

    I used to like the old Yorkshireman unfortunately I think it just got in the way of development they made out that they was protecting it but they had to knock it down absolute ridiculous apparently it started collapsing when they were putting the tower cranes together I know the builders had a issue with people videoing and taking photos around there they didn't do anything to protect the building instead they put a scaffold frame around it with ballistic sheeting as if they was going to knock it down and that is exactly what happened

    I remember going into town with my mum in the 1970s to see the Christmas lights being switched on. The Irish singer Dana was the celebrity,she won the eurovision song contest,before politics replaced the actual talent. I just remember the excitement of town back then,i am pretty sure these days the last friday before Christmas would be the really lively night in town. The busses stop running early doors,so a lot of people go locally. It is still pretty derelict of a Christmas ambience though.

      @@timawells I always went locally on Woodseats on Christmas eve. 1986 I ended up in the police cell for the night. I swore at a copper. I got a beating in the back of the van for it. I was 18 at the time. I was a rebellious young man,but I really didn't deserve what they did to me. I was never violent myself. I did tend to avoid the city centre as I had a bad habit of being on the wrong side of gangs of idiots. My sister always said it was because I was handsome and they were just jealous. I think she was right. Lol

    I lived in Pitsmoor for many years and when we went into city centre for a night out it was very busy. Always finished the evening out with a cheegie burger from Greasey Vera's.

      Used to live on Bye Bank. I remember Greasy Vera's. That van should be in a museum as part of Sheffields heritage.

    About £3 entry if i recall,in the late 80's.into Cairos. I think that they used to let the ladies in free though. I don't recall the feminists being outraged at that.

    I used to prefer Christmas eve afternoon and home for 8/9pm before the fighting started.
    It's indicative of the population, the soul and joy has been ripped out
    We always went to the Frog and Parrot and one across from city hall on a back street that you went downstairs to but I can't remember the name. It was a metal / rock pub. I'm from Barnsley but we'd venture to Sheffield occasionally

      @timawells straight down past city hall on the same road. It used to sell a black beer in a third of a pint. Again I don't remember what it was called (menopause brain fog) I do remember there was a fruit and veg shop a few shops up from it because it was the first place I'd ever eaten Chinese pears and lye cheese.
      I was courting a Sheffield lad (I lived in Barnsley) and he used to take me there late 80s,early 90s

    I remember going to see the New Seekers when I was 16 in the Fiesta, also saw Lynsey De Paul, Showaddywaddy and other acts, also a big darts competition. It became the Odeon either late 80s or early 90s I remember going to see Tombstone in Jan 1994 at the Odeon. The Hofenbraus used to be the Penny Farthing night club in the 70s, I remember my cousin going there.

    That night-spot on Dixon Lane, opened about 1970, I think, as The Penthouse, and became Rebels about 1981. I have often wondered if it isn't exactly the same inside as the day it closed! It was above British Home Stores (I once saw someone dangled out of the window by his ankles!). Baileys was about 30p to get in I think. The casino was originally called Bonaparte's. Very sad Tim, but people don't go out like they once did. Sheffield used to be WILD on Christmas Eve, the pubs were packed from lunchtime. You can see tumble weed blowing across the streets now, practically. As far as Fargate, the illuminations look TERRIBLE! I put up the Christmas lights in 1977, and they were bought second hand from Glasgow, after they had been used in 1962! Hard to believe the tight sods are now spending even LESS! Sorry Tim, I'm going to have to stop watching, I'm depressed! Happy Christmas to you and all your regulars mate :)

    I've never been a big alcohol drinker, and I like my fresh air and sunshine, so night clubs and the like don't do much for me, so I probably wouldn't have noticed if all these places were shut. Buses do finish early and other shops shut early on Christmas Eve though which may explain why people don't go in to the city. New Years' Eve can be busy though. I went to Sheffield on New Years Eve 2021 with my camera and it was very busy. I was going to go this year, but it was raining, so I didn't bother.

    Thats unbelievable for Xmas eve. We had a night out 3 weeks ago on a Saturday, its wasn't too bad, Sheffield tap, Head of Steam, Common Room and Brewdog were quite busy. Its definitely hit and miss these days though. We used to drink in Rotherham and Sheffield in the eighties and it was a different world back then.

    Well done Tim! Fantastic that you have recorded, I would say this is more for historic evidence in the future of a great city when “I were a lad” like yourself 60/70s to compare today how the city has fallen out of favour- I go to Liverpool and it’s vibrant and welcoming.
    Just to finish, the Fiesta in Sheffield was the sister venue to Stockton on Tees, that’s where I used go. My dad use to know the Lipthorpe brothers they owned the clubs and he use do the insurance on them. Do you remember the Fiesta fawns?

    There used to be a nightclub where Bunk is I think it was called Sinatra's. I remember working there, I am sure they had a fish tank with a Moray eel in, he also owned a place in Doncaster, think that was just a pub though.

    Code usually opens at about 11:00 p.m. it is a nightclub open till 5:00 a.m. in the mornings I'm not sure if it's closed permanently but saying that I've not been there for years it was a good little nightclub

    The story with the Christmas markets in Manchester is they had them since early November Sheffield Hades open early December that's probably why Manchester packed there's away I think Sheffield could do with opening the Christmas market a little bit earlier

    We were at Crosspool Tavern last Saturday 21st dec for my eldest daughters bday...they were closing at 10:30pm wasn't full when we went in at 7pm for bday meal we were last ones in at 10pm...it's shocking!!

    Last Friday was mad Friday and it definitely was mad in Sheffield last Friday I was out drinking and two guys but apparently three guys got glassed in the same place Sheffield was packed last Friday it was super busy

      @@timawells Id guess it less than a quarter the amount of bars and pubs, less than 10% of the nightclubs even compared to the mid 2000's. That's why people are saying it was packed last Friday when really it's still dead, everyone just crammed into the few remaining venues.

    I used to go to Rebels circa 83-84 when I had friends at the university. It was a rock place. Think Def Leppard and you've got the idea.Had many a good night in there despite it being a dive.

      @@analogkidabc Yes. You turned right as you went through the door at the top and there was a kiosk / cloakroom with a sign saying "Lads £1.50, Lasses £1". Never any trouble there. Well behaved lot the rock crowd. Bob Maltby was DJ.

      ‘Mad Friday’ has taken over from Xmas Eve in the same way Halloween has taken over from Bonfire night… all these places were rammed on the Friday before Xmas.

      It would have been rammed every Friday and Saturday and Christmas eve. Most of the venues have been killed off the reason for my tour. If Code Sheffield is the best nightclub Sheffield is doomed, it was just Berlins.

    yes it was called rebels nightclub . it was for heavy metal music( and a pub called wapentake- def leppard came in there same time as me!)..people!.i used to go in alot in it . also cairo jax … the roxy . nothing left now .im from southey green area , im 55 can i have the 80s back pls.

    A veritable Christmas wonderland.
    Christmas this year seems a bit of a damp squid, the illuminations in town and the whole atmosphere seem very subdued. Sheffield is now a poor version of it's former self.

      People have realised how much they get ripped off coming in town from previous years, but also what the council has done to it. It wasn't pleasant hearing no English spoke by fighting age lads.

    Yes Tim the place on Campo lane oppose behind cathedral it is definitely some kind of a bar it used to be a pizza place known as craft and dough anyway they moved to what they call a better area you will know the area it's £2,000 a month for a flat, anyway so yes craft and dough turned into a bar croft and dough pizza moved to khallum

    Yorkshireman was originally across from Coles then moved lower down road round the corner near Salvation army place...that was demolished so they moved to what used to be Mulberry Tavern.

    Sheffield centre needs more restaurants and tourist attractions to lure people out. Not everyone wants to go out to just get hammered in clubs/pubs anymore. Times have changed and Sheffield is stuck in the past unfortunately.

    All Bar One is still the same name as when 1st opened.
    I was surprised to see the Miller & Butler Steakhouse finally opened in what was the Halifax Building Society branch. It had a planning permission notice on it for 5/6 years with nowt happening, then obviously the pandemic hit, so put pay to that.

    that's not Josephine's to get to Josephine's you went up the stairs and turned right but you could get to it from where the manhatten was up some stairs because I worked on the door there inches late 70s early 80s,but sheffield is dead xmas eve and new yrs eve was packed in the 70s and 80s drink at Xmas eve dinner time back home last bus into town and then to a night club

    Was the Blue Riband for destroying the nightlife? If they are filling the city centre environs with people who are only here half the year, this is what you end up with! Also, many of those people do not drink hence the closure of pubs. Who is going in a food hall on Christmas Eve? Talking about the 80s is forty years ago! By next year everything will shut at 6 pm. Christmas Ale £9 a pint in Head of Steam 2 years ago. The food stalls have destroyed the Christmas drink culture, in my opinion.

    I remember Waingate/Haymarket full of lights during the Christmas period.
    Used to get excited when coming in from the Wicker on the bus as a kid to see the lights. Seen more lights in a cemetery nowadays.
