    The verbal component of Time Stop is yelling "CUT!" like a director.
    Bonus if you're wearing one of those old-time director's berets and holding the megaphone, but these aren't requirements (no material components are required).

      I've imagined the Glamour Bard's Mantle of Inspiration as a similar sort of vibe. The storyteller yells, "No, no, no, that's not how this goes. PLACES, EVERYONE!" and the enemies are so overcome by the "director"s magical sense of authority in that moment that they can only stare dumbfounded while the "main characters" rearrange around them. It's a bit meta, but I like it.

    The thing about gate is that I find it lends itself heavily to one of two ways with how it is RAW. It's either for the DM to do an extraplanar invasion thing or for a Conjurer PC to try their luck at binding a big pet for themselves with some prepped magic circles and planar binding. For the spell to now allow you to control the creature relatively uncontested somewhat undermines the amount of effort it takes to summon and bind something so high CR. From experience it takes 2 or more high level caster PC's to pull this off, and it can be quite risky, but is pretty rewarding. Right now I have a wizard who is planning on using glyph of warding to try pull this off on his own.

    • @BillWiltfong
      @BillWiltfong Год назад +1

      You're right and all, but one round of controlling the creature is pretty tame. If as the DM you don't like that, you have a dozen ways to fight it, from "lol you can't gate something from that plane, gods said so," to, "the angel glares at you as you make your command, drawing a finger across its neck. Better have some tricks up your sleeve for round 2, because this is going to get very, very bloody," to, "Okay you get one round. It'll succeed on the save though, so be ready to talk your way into some cooperation."

    I think thematically, Psychic damage makes more sense than Necrotic for Power Word Kill. It's an Enchantment spell after all, and you're *compelling* the creature to die, not just snuffing out its life force with negative energy. Basically, it's Avada Kedavra.

    I feel like True Resurrection needs a material component, but ONLY if your trying to resurrect something that only True rez can resurrect. Like something that has no body, has been dead for too long, ext... And at this point you'd need a much longer casting time. To compensate for all of this, if True rez is used like Rivivify/Resurrect, whatever is resurrected has IMMUNITY for one round. Dunno if this would balance it out around wish though.

    • @aldoushuxley5953

      honestly, instead of buffing true resurrection, I would nerve wish, as it is super op.
      You get access to every 1-8 level spell just by taking wish, remember how wizards are op because they are so versatile...
      Why does wish have to remove material components and reduce the casting time? That is just stupid. If you had to pay for material components, even if you cast wish, there would be no issues here

    I would houserule Imprisonment for my PC'sto make it less limiting. The modification is that they can imprison the target in any way as long as:
    -They do not die in imprisonment.
    -They can not affect the world in a significant way.
    So you turn them into a statue, freeze them in time, or capture them in a mirror.

  • @PiiskaJesusFreak
    @PiiskaJesusFreak 4 года назад +1

    I'm not sure how I feel about Gate giving you control over the summoned creature. Maybe because my first exposure to it was Baldurs Gate 2, where it always summoned a pit fiend that was hostile to everyone. But having the control does bring it more in line with other spells of the same level... And it still isn't overpowered, because more powerful things you might want to summon have either legendary resistances or magic resistance+good charisma save. So you you probably get only a few turns obedience from it.
    This is probably fine. Now the ultimate summoning spell is not strictly worse at summoning than true polymorph.

    Overall, love the changes, especially to Weird! Two thoughts:
    Storm of Vengeance
    The mechanical effect of "a severe distraction for the purposes of maintaining concentration on spells" is unclear - it appears to be a vestigial rule. I understand that DMs may make of this what they will, but I would consider clarifying that a creature in the spell's area has disadvantage on Constitution saving throws made to maintain concentration on a spell when it takes damage; that when a creature enters the area for the first time on a turn or starts its turn there, it must make a Constitution saving throw to maintain concentration on a spell (with a DC equal to the caster's spell save DC or a flat DC); or similar…
    Time Stop
    At first blush, I did like the idea of making this a reaction, but the more I think about it, I find that it invites all sorts of issues.
    The change also makes it nearly impossible to use in any context other than combat. The versatility and rp value of time stop are some of the most compelling reasons to take it. Haven’t rolled initiative yet, but negotiations are going south? Time Stop to gain the upper hand!
    Now onto the confusion. This points to one of my biggest issues with 5e: the vagaries and limitations of the action economy. How does allowing one creature to take multiple turns as a reaction during another creature's action affect the action economy? Does the reaction here trigger only "when a creature you can see takes an action"? What if the creature takes a bonus action or a reaction? Maybe you wouldn't use time stop when your ally is casting storm of vengeance, but you might when your foe attempts to counterspell it, or later when they try to misty step away or bring their ally back with healing word. But if you allow a reaction to trigger it, could the caster of time stop then interrupt the casting of counterspell with one of their actions? If only triggered when another creature takes an action, what if the action the other creature takes is a spell with a duration of instantaneous? Is the reaction from time stop more instantaneous than instantaneous, or is it triggered before the casting?

    • @TreantmonksTemple
      @TreantmonksTemple  4 года назад +4

      The effects of a "severe distraction" on concentration are detailed in the PHB. I don't have the page # on me at the moment, but if you check concentration in the PHB index you'll find it.
      As for out of combat Time Stop, I suppose that's true - though I've never seen Time Stop used outside of combat personally.
      Regarding the trigger - no, a reaction or bonus action cannot be interrupted as the reaction is triggered "when a creature that you can see takes an action". In regards to Instantaneous spells, that effect occurs after the spell is complete, and the text of Time Stop should make it clear that it takes effect before the results of the interrupted action occur.

    • @evannibbe9375
      @evannibbe9375 2 года назад +1

      About Action Economy, remember that by the time the player characters can cast 9th level spells, a necromancy Wizard can have hundreds of zombie and skeleton servants, so the action economy is already meant to be defeated. Plus, as a 9th level spell, it is supposed to break things.

  • @philosopherhobbs

    Great changes. Can't think of anything wrong with them. Time Stop as a reaction is really cool. I still don't like the "can't affect others in any way" clause and would just change that to a "no damage" clause. The ability to move, swap, or reorient other creatures is just too cool.

    Storm of Vengeance is better but I think you should be able to move it to a different location per round, that way it might not be 'city-sized' but you could affect a lot more of a city or similar.
    I also think Wizards should hire you for all the work you do fixing their gaffs.

  • @Kheldul
    @Kheldul 4 года назад +3

    I understand where you are coming from with True Resurrection. However, a single action to Rez a 200 year old corpse seems to lack flavor. I feel like ritual type timing is important. (Turning it into a ritual would seem to be problematic but interesting.) Having no material makes me also wonder about how it might work and affect cities and churches if it is a free benefit from a benevolent leadership.

    • @BillWiltfong
      @BillWiltfong Год назад

      I had a similar thought. However, it's a 9th-level spell. That means there are only a few cities where even one person can cast it. Those few people are already charging through the nose for 9th-level spellcasting services. Add to that this spell is in hugely high demand, so the casters can charge 250,000 gp without a material component being required at all. Then, add that the casters who have ready access to the spell are either players (who are a wild bunch, but get a pass to do what they want) or they are literally the world's wisest people, and would generally not throw the spell around willy-nilly. It's a self-limiting spell.
      Or it's handled as "push Ctrl-9 on your hotbar every time the ability refreshes," but the people who play like that have much bigger problems.

  • @robmarney
    @robmarney 4 года назад +1

    As usual, good thematic fixes, except for the big AOE. I like upscaling all the effects of Storm of Vengeance by 4d6 and making the options flexible, but allowing the user to pick the same option over and over means that no one will use the acid or bludgeoning options. This works against the theme/fantasy of the spell, which is summoning all the elements of nature to your command. Even "you can't pick the same action twice" doesn't get around this. I don't like buffing the acid/bludgeoning to be competitive with lightning either; this spell already does more damage than Meteor Swarm (concentration is not an issue with infinite range), it's just less useful when used to attack a city.

    • @TreantmonksTemple
      @TreantmonksTemple  4 года назад +4

      Why would nobody take the acid/bludgeoning options? Let's say I'm hitting 100 enemies with this, and the 2ndary effects of interrupting concentration etc are not really helpful - 5d6 damage with no save becomes by far the most effective option.

    I dont know how feasible this is, since im new to the game, but can you make the storm spell a charge type spell that can also be cast as a ritual? Meaning for every minute you prepare, you multiply the radius or something? And if cast as a spell, rather than a ritual, being interrupted or whatever merely completes the spell rather than stops or cancels it. Seems more appropriate for a massive storm type spell.

    hmm, Dude i really want to ask a favor of you regarding your fascination on DnD universe there is an anime called Overlord you can watch it in crunchyroll for free that anime man is what made me interested in DnD please consider watching it you will never ever regret watching it, that anime will give WHOLE lot of ideas about necromancy and Instant Death mechanic :P man please consider watching it....

      Overlord is pretty cool, yeah. But any fantasy can serve as inspiration for D&D. Even non-fantasy can give inspiration.
      Overlord would need tweaking since the whole point is for the evil dude to be completely unbeatable. A game where the bad guy is completely unbeatable wouldn't be a good idea. The whole point is for the PC's to win.

      TheRockofShame i just want him to watch it, do you know why? I really want him to make new necromancy spells based on it like the 9th lvl spell Grasp Heart and i want him to take a look at Instant Death mechanic (it uses necromancy spells to cause a living creature to instantly die )😜maybe it can be tweaked a little bit and make it viable 😍just imagine a 20th lvl necromancer that walks the earth and can kill small plants and weak animals and weak humans like peasants instantly just looking at them...Dam that would be So GREAT

    I would have given wish a costly material component, maybe 500-2000gp, and flavored it as an offering to the entity you beseech for the wish. Yes, this would be a nerf to wish and yes, I think it's warranted. I know people don't like nerfs, but just my 2c.

    Gate - What about having the creature have disadvantage on the charisma save and unable to spend legendary resistances if you know its true name? Finding a true name can be an entire campaign tbh

    I would have given powerword kill the power it actually should have while also keeping it simple:
    Save or die, if you save you get hit by 100 points of necrotic damage.

    • @muhammadmousa4192
      @muhammadmousa4192 4 года назад +1

      I disagree with that. There are creatures without legendary resistance that should still be threatening for a high-level party, and there are also ways to force a failed save. There's a reason there's a precedent for no true save-or-die spells in the game, since too much of the game's content would be trivialized if you had a good chance to just end the encounter absolutely on round 1.

      @@Seelenverheizer Sure, but imo that doesn't mean it should be able to oneshot one of the many CR 15+ creatures that lack legendary resistance. Furthermore, there are also monsters with access to power word kill, and the version of it you're proposing would feel very unfair to use against PCs.

    wish needs a nerf.
    Isn't having every spell (1-8) in the game in one enough?
    I think, making it even stronger by changing the casting time of a spell, or the components required is *complete* nonsense

    • @Temujin.Thinketh.
      @Temujin.Thinketh. 4 года назад +1

      I see your point but I think this is the intent: to make it the most powerful spell in the game.
      On top of that I think most people use it for simulacrum and greater steeds which bards and wizards can already select at lower levels.
      On the rare circumstance that a player does wish for something outside the boundaries they take a ton of negative debuffs, have to make a roll to not lose wish forever and the spell text encourages the DM to come up with entertaining consequences.
      Of course wish can change the course of an encounter but at that level the DM should be prepared to handle that level of play.

      @@Temujin.Thinketh. I have to admit, that I do not have a lot of experience with wish, because my group usually stops around lv 10-15, so this is mostly theoretical.
      However, doesn't the "loose wish" penalty only happen, when you want to create effects, that can not be replicated by spells?
      Even with my limitations, wish is still the best spell.
      Wizards are so strong, because of their flexibility. Otherwise sorcerers would beat them.
      So what could be better than a spell, that is EVERY lv 1-8 spell in one?
      You don't need to improve those spells (removing components etc) to make wish good, wish is already op, even without that
