🩵Nicole! Adorable little Phal. I love watching your videos before bedtime. Your voice is so soothing and I pretty much learn something new every time, even though I’m far from a beginner. Ordering coconut husks because Orchiata bark has gotten soooo expensive. I live in the South, use plenty of moss, but only a full pot on small orchids because of the humidity here. Oh, and cat scratches are nothing to mess around with. Learned that the hard way as several years ago I had a wound that took 3 rounds of antibiotics to heal. At least I didn’t end up in the hospital. Sorry you had to. Bet it was a combo of the scratch and the repot. Anyway, thanks again for the great video!🩵
Thank you so much 💗I really appreciate your nice comment and it keeps me motivated to make more videos. Husk is definitely cheaper than bark. I like SVO's kiwi bark but the shipping is the expensive part. I always order in bulk now. Living in the south 100% moss is tricky with that humidity, but more bark / husk / air will work great with it. Happy growing friend :)
Awesome video! I learn so much from you!! Love those roots on that huge teddy bear phal!! Amazing! Also that's so intense that you had to go to the hospital for that!! I'm glad you're doing better and taking the necessary precautions with gloves!
Yes because you had cat scratch fever and it’s a thing. I went to the walk in because a clients cat attacked me and the Dr there said if I started running a fever and not feeling well in general go immediately to the hospital. Cat scratch fever is definitely serious. Glad you are ok.
It's terrible! It spread so rapidly and I had antibiotics too but they didn't work so I had to get on an IV asap. Thank you for watching and for your kind comment.
I was a little scared to use moss on my phals since i had no experience with it before, So i bought it and repotted all my species phals and it has worked SUPER well for me. Your videos and missorchdgirls both has taught me so much on that repotting process
Thanks for sharing. Great video. I am not luck y with repotting phals. I tried using moss, bark, charcoal. It had all rooted. I switch to Dends and Catts. I lived in South Florida. My plants are outside. Have a safe trip. Happy Growing. ❤
If you live in south florida perhaps a mixture with more air / less moisture retention will be better. You might have to water more often but in very humid environments, moss may stay soggy too long. I hope you find something that works for phals in your environment. Happy Growing :))
You got this! I hope it works out well for you! The only environments I hear that moss doesn't do super well are outdoor humid environments. Good luck and let me know how it goes!
I live in Central NJ, so , I am like an hour from you. The icecream trucks haven't started yet here. We have a similar environment. I keep my orchids in Sphagnum moss and bark. I do the same as you, I do not use that big of a pot. Then I use Repotme slow release fertilizer. I have over 100 orchids. I have lost count. I live in a two level condo. Once I get my own house, I am hoping to have a whole room dedicated to my orchids. Right now half my bed room is orchids. I am also way behind on repotting. Don't feel so bad. 😊
I feel less bad now ❤️😂 I like the slow release fertilizer, but then forget when to top them off again lol. Hope you're able to get your grow room soon :) it's nice to have a dedicated space for them!
Great video. I love your videos. I’m new to your channel. I plant my orchids in a “moss sandwich”, especially my small orchids using more moss than orchiata bark. I’m curious about what you soak your moss in. My climate that I grow in is eastern PA, formerly from the Bronx. It can be hot and dry, but getting cooler a bit now in September.
I’m so sorry you were so sick! I knew cat scratches could be bad but I guess the combo with the repotting was like a 1-2 punch. I try to wear gloves when dealing with fertilizer (I often don’t) but I’m going to be more vigilant about it and for repotting too. I always saw miss orchid girl using gloves and I thought she was overly cautious. Guess she was wiser than us! Anyway, I’m so sorry that happened to you but thank you for sharing. Also- I love love your LD Bear King!!! Putting it on the list!!
Thank you! Yeah, it shocked me that I ended up in the hospital, I went to the doctor they gave me antibiotics, then the next day the infection spread up my arm. It was shocking to me. the scratch was deep, and it's possible that I got something from the cat or the potting materials. So I'll wear gloves moving forward, though I think the chances of getting sick like that are low (it was a deep puncture on my wrist). LD's Bear King smells like oranges! You'll love it!
A very timely video for me. Thank you so much! I am just going to repot my novelty phals. I also use sphagnum moss, but it turns green because of algae very soon. Do you have this problem? I am not sure what to do when there is a lot of algae. Should I repot? Sorry about your illness. Cat scratches can be really bad.
The algae is no problem. It's really common, but will not hurt the orchid. You can top a 100% moss repot with bark if you want to prevent the algae from forming on the top. Check out the video I linked from the last moss repot, i topped it with bark like I was explaining here, but i did have algea around the sides of the pot. It's the light on the moss and the moisture that causes this issue. Thank you for watching and for your lovely comment.
The Phalaenopsis modesta is supposed to smell like grape soda. I have it saved on my wishlist. My new summer blooming young orchids are all making new roots and leaves, but I can already see algae growing since I'm not using a decorative pot. I covered the top with small bark and they're under an LED light, but sometimes I put them in dappled afternoon sun so maybe that's what it is. It doesn't smell, but I'm tempted to repot.
@@BK-jp4ys They came in moss so I wanted to transmission them to bark slowly by mixing in some small grade bark. Where I live can be pretty cold though so I have to be careful with watering.
I've been repotting a few novelty Phals as well. If they are in moss, it goes so quick to take off the old and put them in new. Not like trying to do a Cattleya in bark where you can spend half your life trying to get the bark out.
SO EASY. I'm DREADING repotting all my cattleyas, and I DREAD them because I know that the slightest roughness to the roots will have it dump the whole root system haha. I'll be back to dividing and getting some divisions and stuff out now that its warmer. I gotta get Paula her Tetraspis C1.
The moss is slightly moist so it's pliable. I recommend a 3' pot usually for a mini phal if it has good roots that can fill it up, if not I'd go smaller, it really depends on the root system.
I have a question. Do you water the phals immediately after repotting? Just want to compare what I am doing wrong. All my phals died from root rotting. Thanks kindly.
Hey there I do! I water it but let it dry fully, then water again till i start seeing good root growth, then I water as it approaches dryness. If your orchids died from root rotting, it could be that the orchids stayed too soggy too long, or perhaps are not kept too warm when they are wet. THey should be over 65 degrees, preferably over 70 degrees. Could also be that the pots are too big and taking too long to dry. Maybe try smaller pots

Hi Nicole, beautiful Phalaenopsis and great re-potting. I would love to have a grape smelling orchid… yummy! 😋😁👏👏👏🌷🌸🌞 Enjoy your vacation!!! ❤

HiNicole. Nice repot , it was fun watching. Pretty orchid too. Have a wonderful safe trip. 🥰💐

Im going to start using spagnum only with my phals too

Love New Zealand moss and the bark is really great. They have small amounts also. No need to buy large amounts if not needed.
