In this "Famous Solos" installment we will take a look at the solo that pretty much changed rock guitar as we know it.
The unaccompanied guitar solo "Eruption" was on Van Helen's debut album and instantly made Eddie Van Halen a legendary figure in the guitar world.
I chose to focus on just the tapping section of Eruption since that is the part most people recognize.
Of course Eruption introduced to the world Eddie Van Halen's dazzling tapping technique. Even though tapping had been employed by numerous guitarists before, no one had ever taken it to such musical heights.
At the beginning of the video I demonstrate the basic 3 note tapping pattern Eddie uses throughout the whole section. From there it is just simply a matter of memorizing the different arpeggios.
Take your time and get the tapping pattern down by itself first before trying to learn the entire song.
Hope you guys enjoy the lesson. We certainly can't get any bigger than this when it comes to famous solos. :)

@@lilpicks5802 my guy there is no way you can play the 3rd solo in sweet child o mine or this solo cleanly in only 6 months of playing guitar. No matter how much you praticed simply impossible to have your fingers that fast and your techniques that good in only 6 months of playing.
I feel like I'm obliged to learn this solo since his death. You will forever be missed EVH. RIP

with my overall progress i kinda hit a plateau rn since college and a relationship is taking time away from my ability to sit down a play my guitar. i’m definitely gonna set aside some time to get back into it though!

5:07 yess, I love that part about Eruption. It always made me feel like the notes are flying fast and something's trying to race up to them, but lagging behind.

It’s good to randomly post on old videos. So I’ll say this....the hard part of this is not the tapping pattern. The hard part is making it clean. Left and right hand muting non-played strings while moving the tapping pattern up and down the neck. Without getting that part right, you just have a muddy sounding mess. String muting is one of the most frustrating parts of playing with gain. But once you fight through it, you’ll find yourself muting strings without thinking about it.
I use my left hand to mute the g string and when I tap and pull off I go up
been practicing this on acoustic and seriously cant wait to get my first electric to see how it sounds

i thought it was harder
of coarse its easy thats why every video is called "twelve year plays eruption!!!!" but they only play the tapping becasue thats all the care about and they dont even play that right they play it way yo slow and they just tap with there picks, but then they get all these comments saying there a "real shreader" and "OMG YOUR AMAZING YOUR GONNA BE THE NEXT EDDIE VAN HALEN!!!!" . they also half ass or dont even play the first half that actually can be hard and takes skill.

Always thought this was kind of the hardest thing to play on guitar. Have been learning guitar for a month now and this is easy. I'm so happy that I can play this because I love this part of the solo

SirSnekk it might be bcs u have a shitty amp or the amp is just no set to the right settings or maybe ur just not tapping correctly but there r many vids u can check out on tapping and amp settings. Good luck i hope this will help u

I just started guitar in june, my first song was smoke on the water, then hells bells, seek and destroy, and now im trying this for the late great Eddie Van Halen.
Thanks Carl. This was helpful. I was able to get through the first section up to 17th fret last night with the changes. You can definitely feel the burn in the hand after awhile. I need to implement these types of exercises into my routine.

I can play the solo just fine, it's just that I hit the other strings while playing so it sounds shitty. Tips?
Just be more accurate with your tapping dude. Stay on a slower speed until you can play it without making any bad sounds.
***** has nothing to do with the tuning. its just the way that i tap. i hit the other strings.
+Plurple I mute the bottom and the lower string with the top and the bottom of my index finger (left hand) and even if you hit other strings they won`t sound. Hope this helps :)
+Plurple As you hold the 2 fret B string with your index (or whichever fret), slightly touch the 3rd string, thus muting it

I encourage anyone to learn to play this no matter what your skill lever is. You might surprise yourself. And also just learn it and every now and then try to play it and get the timing and rhythm down because this song is just practice PRACTICE PRACTICE! Have fun playing!!!! So glad I bought my drop tune pedal super useful as so many songs use different tunings from Eb to Drop B and messing with strings and tuners is a pain with different guitars.
Been playing guitar for 3 weeks. I will check back in one week from now to see my progress on this.
