*[Yamanashi - Miyazawa Kenji, Translated by Eric Margolis]* *(**7:36** - **13:06**)* *2. December* The two baby crabs had grown up to be big and strong, and the season had turned from summer to autumn long ago. Smooth white stones, beads of crystal, and chipped pieces of rusty red rock came tumbling across the bottom of the stream. Moonlight sparkled on the glass of a sunken bottle in the cold water. As a wave swept over the stream like a blue flame flickering and vanishing in the dark, the world lay in quiet. The ripples on the stream echoed softly like whispers from far away. The two baby crabs had stayed up late at night to watch the beautiful light of the big moon shining through the water. They stayed silent for a long, long time as they watched the bubbles floating up towards the sky. *“My bubbles are really big, aren’t they!”* _said one._ *“Are you making your bubbles big on purpose?”* _said the other._ *“I can make big bubbles-bigger than yours if I want to!”* *“Just watch. Look, you can’t beat that, can you? I’m older than you, after all. Watch and learn. Hey, what do you think? Pretty big, right?”* *“They look the same to me.”* *“That’s because you’re closer to your own bubbles. So they look bigger to you than they do to me. Let’s try blowing them together. Go ahead, try it, look.”* *“Mine are definitely bigger!”* *“Now there, now there, no need to go crazy!”* Father crab had showed up again. *“It’s already late,”* father crab said. *“Come along, let’s get to bed. I’ll take you to the Isado tomorrow.”* *“Dad! Whose bubbles are bigger?”* *“Well, it looks like your older brother’s bubbles are bigger.”* *“You’re wrong! Mine are bigger!”* Baby brother crab looked like he was about to cry. Then there was a thump! Something big and round and black came falling down onto the surface of the water. From below, they could see little golden specks glowing bright on the surface of the stream. *“It’s a kingfisher!”* shouted the baby crabs. Father crab’s beady eyes ogled around like a pair of spectacles as he looked round and round. Then he said: *“It’s not a kingfisher-that’s a wild pear. It’s floating away now, let’s try to get it! Wow, what a wonderful smell.”* Father crab was right-throughout the moonlit stream, the fresh smell of yamanashi was everywhere. So the three crabs started walking with all their six little legs to get a good look at the yamanashi. As they walked sideways, the silhouettes of their legs danced and scurried towards the dark, round shadow of the yamanashi on the streambed. Before long, as the murmuring stream whispered, and as the waves swept up again like blue flames flickering, they noticed that the yamanashi had gotten stuck in the branch of a tree that was floating on the water. On the stream’s waxy surface, moonlight gathered in the still water into a smiling rainbow. *“That’s a yamanashi, all right,”* _father crab announced._ *“It’s so ripe, too, and what a great smell!”* *“Father, it looks yummy!”* *“Patience, patience. If we wait a few days, it’ll come falling right down to the bottom of the stream, and we can make a delicious liqueur. Come on, let’s go home and get to bed.”* And father crab and the two baby crabs went home. A wave swept over the surface of the stream like a blue flame flickering and vanishing in the dark, and the little bubbles drifted towards the surface like snow made out of diamonds. And now my magic lantern has no more story left to tell. overtheoffing.wordpress.com/2020/08/06/wild-pear/ *_Other note: The link above includes both parts of Yamanashi.
