Losing Bear still seems so surreal. He passed away ion June 8, 2023. Bear had an extreme and fatal vaccine reaction.
Despite being at the vet when it happed, Bears reaction was not typical and the normal treatment given for these types of reactions did not work. Our vet was able to stabilize him, but it only lasted a short time and he went back down hill. He was initially bleeding from his gums and rectal, and his pulse was almost non existent. Our vet spent hours of trying to help him, but he ended up passing anyway. I was with him when he took his last breath, he was completely out of it, but I believe he knew I was there.
Bear is not my first ferret to have a vaccine reaction, but I’ve never seen it this bad. Our vet said this is rare and nothing about Bears heath indicated giving the vaccine would harm him. In the end, I’m so grateful our vet makes us wait at least 30 mins after the vaccine before leaving or I would have been half way home when the reaction started and he probably would have passed before I could get back to the vets office.
My heart still hurts so bad and it really makes me sad is knowing he beat cancer less than 3 months prior to passing, the hair on his tummy from his surgery was finally all the way back, and even though he was getting older, he was doing well. He was eating and playing and acting normal. To lose him like this, made me angry and sad, not to mention, it was a completely unexpected.
Please know this video is in no way me saying not to vaccinate your ferrets, I took 3 ferret to the vet that day for an annual checkup and I will come continue schedule my ferrets for their annual checkups. What happened to Bear is rare, while vaccine reactions in ferrets does happen, it does not often end like this.
Vaccines have been essential in preventing Distemper and rabies and have saved countless lives. I’m sharing Bears story because I feel it’s important for ferret owners to know and understand the risks and benefits of vaccines. I also want to encourage people to speak to your vet if you have questionsj7 or concerns and it’s also important that your vet is familiar with treating with exotic animals, as these little guys require are that is a bit difficult than dogs and cats.
According to the National Institute of Health( NIH) “Because most reactions occur almost immediately after vaccination, have the owner monitor the ferret in the waiting area for 30 minutes or more after vaccination with any product.” www.ncbi.nlm.n...
Thank you so much for all your love and support. Knowing that Bear was so loved and that he touched so many people makes my heart a little less.

I lost my Snowy last Monday. He had three seizures very early Monday morning. He had a bad heart, adrenal disease, bad teeth and the start of insulin issues. The vet was seeing me a whole lot. He was 8 or 9 years old. It was time. My three ferrets who are still with me are all allergic to the distemper vaccine. I’m absolutely terrified to do it anymore. I remember your story and I cried. It was heartbreaking. I really am sorry for your loss. I’m tearing up again. Seriously, you are amazing to your fur babies. You are in my thoughts ❤

Sorry to hear about Bear. I love your videos and you are a good ferret momma. I just lost my ferret last July three days before my birthday and it crushed me. He was my little buddy. We have two ferrets now. Suga bear, TILLY bear. Mika bear is in ferret heaven having fun with your Bear. I wish you the best. Thank you for your videos. ❤

Thank you so much and I’m so sorry for your loss, I know how heartbroken you must be. I miss my Bear everyday, I miss the little routines I had with him (he liked to eat in a specific spot and he would follow me back and forth while I changed his water bowl and filled up his food, we did this at least twice a day. He was very particular about his blue water bowl, probably because he dunked his food in it 🤦‍♀️ he like fresh water several times a day 😂)

@@FerretTails Yeah it was really hard. Mika bear would follow me around and watch me wash the dishes while laid on his back staring up at me. In the morning he would crawl up on my bed and wake me up licking my face and ears until I would get up and then dook jumping around my feet then watch me in the bathroom looking up at me on his back. At night he would curl up close to me and let out a huff and then fall asleep. I miss him so much. I honestly understand why you have such a close attachment to them they are like our babies and they show so much love. 🥰💕

Losing a ferret is heartbreaking. I have 3 surviving baby girls, all fully vaccinated and hormone implanted to prevent them from coming into season. Vet bills are high in the UK, but you pay what is necessary to protect them. That's why God invented credit cards. Best wishes with your latest additions.
