    I appreciate that Brown Mark told his side of the story about his time with Prince. I don't like that he was sometimes treated harshly by Prince, but it doesn't make me love Prince any less than I already do. It just helps me see another side of him. And, to be honest, those geniuses who have the drive to make it to the top and be seen for generations as 'the greatest of all time' have an unyielding nature that is a force to be reckoned with. It's like 'get on this train and ride with me the right way, or get off and get out of my way!' Prince had it, and Michael Jordan had it as seen in the bio-pic "The Last Dance." M.J. was harsh at times, too. But, just like Prince, he was of a singular mind : "Get to the top. And if I have to move you out of my way, I'll move you out of my way." I love both of those guys, and understand their mindset. (And to be honest, what 20-something-year-old guys wouldn't become narcissistic if they have the world at their feet, they're are truly major talents/geniuses, and have been given free range to do anything musically AND in film? Most guys in that position go 'buck wild!' And, as seen with Prince, they calm down a bit in their later years.)

      The Beatles were never like that. They never got big heads or narcissistic. The opposite, they were kinda humble.
      Who is the biggest band of all time?
      The Beatles
      Top-selling artists worldwide as of 2022. Perhaps unsurprisingly, British rock band The Beatles are top of the list for best-selling artists worldwide, with 183 million units certified sales. Second is Garth Brooks with over 157 million units sales, followed by Elvis Presley with 139 million units.Dec 8, 2022.
      I was never a Prince fan, but Cameo "I just Wanna Be?" That is how I ran into BrownMark. KayGees "Get down" OH YES YES YES. AAAAH, it's on YT, YES
      ruclips.net/video/73ZBXE6AZ1M/видео.html
      Who's the Man with the Master Plan, that too. I have about 40 90min casette tapes of this kind of stuff from heh, WAY back.
      Prince? Eh, Jungle Love? America? OK. I bet BrownMark would LOVE these KayGees songs. Another divine song "Heart and Soul" by Imagination. DIVINE.

      @@tanl7756 You sure of that? Even though they worked together on songs Paul and John were jealous with each other and they fought all the time. Paul because he was a workaholic and drove the other 3 crazy, John because he wanted out of the Beatles by '67. And they both didn't want George's songs on the albums because of money and ego. I’m definitely getting this book. I’ve listened to other interviews by BrownMark and it always breaks my heart to hear his hurt. Prince became a superstar. Prince tried to keep his school buddies in his life, he even tried to keep his childhood state in his life, but he excelled to such a higher level, he could no longer carry everyone with him. Will anyone of his colleagues cause the world to light up in their signature color when they leave this earth? I doubt it. Prince was a musical legend. It hurts to have the same aspirations as Prince, to stand next to him and create next to him, but to never reach his success. But BrownMark sees only the negative in this, in my opinion. He was very lucky life to be a witness to Prince’s metamorphoses. A privilege to know him as a friend. But I understand how sad it can be to want what Prince and not reach it, especially because success seemed so close at hand. I do believe he sees his truth in this, but the hurtful truth is that Prince joined another league and was no longer the small town kid. 💜

      @beatz04 4 года назад +6

      Some people just don't understand that they're simply not quite on the same level as the one they admire as an artist (or entrepreneur or whatever). Doesn't mean they can't bring anything to the table at all (Brownmark obviously could), just you shouldn't mistake working with/for somebody with being on the same level with them in all aspects.

    • @sunnypie2
      @sunnypie2 4 года назад +7

      beatz04 true! I just sense a sadness and regret among many former Prince band mates. It seems like they blame Prince for their “failures” because they didn’t reach his level of success. They are successful but to compare themselves to him, I believe is causing their pain. They think Prince caused their pain, but it’s their attitude

    • @beatz04
      @beatz04 4 года назад +13

      @@sunnypie2 I agree. I think it's especially true with Jesse and Morris Day, and to a degree Sheila as well. People should understand that an artist the caliber of Prince first and foremost has (or feels) an obligation to their gift of artistry and everything else comes second. Hence replacing band members or his whole band with different people after a while, being a control freak at times etc. Prince wouldn't have gotten to where he was if he'd made "homies first" a priority. In addition to that, i'd say he has given people a plethora of opportunities and probably a platform to get as big as they possibly could become anyway. I mean, how much further do you wanna go if you have been given the opportunity to be a part of the Prince universe ? People sometimes act as if he owed them something or more than he gave, when there is a high probability those people would have never made it that far without Prince in the first place. Yeah, Morris Day might think he would have been a better drummer than Bobby Z (and technically he might be even right) but for a long time he failed to understand that for Prince it wasn't all just about the technical skills as a drummer. Which ironically just illustrates my point, because not understanding that fact is an indication of why Morris just wasn't on the same level Prince was. Same for Jesse: He surely is one of the best guitar players out there, but in no way is he on the same level with Prince when it comes to songwriting, production, vocal chops and overall uniqueness. And to complain about the lost opportunity to establish himself as a household blues guitar player - it was his decision to go the MN sound route after Prince with his solo projects, i mean he clearly emulated his whole visual style and singing after Prince and no one forced him to. How is that Prince's "fault" ?? Eric Leeds: Throughout his whole career he has made it a point to let the world know from time to time that he would have preferred to play Jazz instead of Prince's music. Again: Who forced him to take the job he was offered ? Some people are just ungrateful. The ones that clearly understood their own strengths and took their chance to make the best out of the opportunity Prince gave them were of course Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. You rarely heard them complain, they knew they had f*cked up according to Prince's playbook, they never wanted to be the main star anyway but they surely knew how to leverage their own strengths and the fact they were a part of the Prince world. All in all, i'd even say most people of the Prince camp made most out of their chances and have nothing to complain about and for the most part, don't. But if you get to the top like Prince did, you can't please everyone anyway.

    IMO....I think the Revolution think that they are bigger/better than they really were. I think every band Prince had after them could out play them and personnel wise were better on their instruments especially the band with Renato, John Blackwell, Rhonda Smith. Hell The Time outplayed them in the 80s

    • @c.i.8317
      @c.i.8317 4 года назад +5

      Its amazing that people talk about how the other bands could out play The Revolution bandmembers YET,
      NO other bands/bandmembers went on to have as prolific of careers in the industry overall than the Revolution musicians. Hmmm.
      Yeah, the other musicians like Sonny T., Mike Bland, OF COURSE Lady R., and Levi are just that deal but really I believe its about adaptability.
      The Revolution were groomed from nothing so to speak and when it really came to playing this sort of music which forever changed Pop culture, NPG and The Lovesexy Band and The other mishmash of musicians had to just follow along with what was laid down before them. Simple and plain.
      Levi even talked about how he had to switch it up because playing for Prince was an altogether different beast than anything he had truly done from The Bay area.
      So please stop taking digs and disrespecting Z., Dr. Fink, Lisa, Wendy-Wen, and you can't diss BrownMark.
      They went on to score and do soundtracks for MAJOR motion pictures, produce platinum albums in their entirety ie; Lisa and Wendy (produced Seal's first platinum hit album). Matt Fink continued to play with P. Years after The Revolution disbanded Barbarella, and Morris Hayes were NOT the Staple, Matt Dr. Fink was until he resigned still playing from The Revolution days through to The NPG days in the first assembly of the group with Rosie. He was NEVER given a pink slip THAT'S how much of a better Keyboardist he was than Morris Hayes who later became his musical director for the later versions of NPG. Brown Mark brought Mazarati to the table and produced them. Those Boys were that deal, NO ONE in any those OTHER bands could bring the likes of Screamer, Christian, Sir Casey Terry, etc.. in and harness what they could do with that first hit from their very first album because he could play and was respected! Bobby continued to do drum tracks and session with Prince long after The Revolution disbanded. Fink,...He and Rosie resigned they weren't fired like the other NPG groups.
      So stop people.
      The Revolution is/was badass every bit as the other Bands just in a different way.
      SMDH.
      P.S. The Revolution were/are the ONLY group actually doing World Tours to the magnitude that they are.
      Pretty much all of Europe and just about everywhere Prince went.
      The other Band's are piecing together stints here and there because The tightness spiritually and musically cannot be replicated through just being great musicians.
      The other Bands have a different spiritual vibe than The Revolution.
      The people feel that as well you can't play great to get that you have to BE great and that's a natural love for this not a ego driven see me I'm this dude from The Bay, or been here in Minneapolis before everyone else doing this, or I know so and so, etc.
      Remember BrownMark brought Morris Hayes to the table to audition for Prince and Morris mentioned himself he didn't think he was good enough to play. How is that possible if Morris who later became Prince's musical director felt he wasn't up to part to play with Prince and yet HE and others from NPG were better musicians than The Revolution? Doesn't make sense. STOP it. The Revolution is every bit as good than the others!
      The spiritual ride....
      That's most important. The experience you give the people.
      You have to remember Prince spoke about giving the people that experience not just a great performance.
      NPG didn't and still dont have that feel.
      But they can play like NOBODY'S business, have people reminiscent on certain songs as ANY good musician, artist, band can do no doubt but, The Revolution had/has a Spiritual connection everytime because they were the first (after Andre and Dez left) and truly hand picked from obscurity because they were the best around at what they did individually.
      Check the files. Let's stop dumping on the first to do it with Prince. If it weren't for The Revolution, there would be NO blueprint for the other so-called BETTER musicians to follow and yes Levi Seacer Jr. explained there was a blueprint THEY still had to follow JUST like The Revolution. Remember the bands after The Revolution STILL had to play the songs like Prince said to play them and Brown Mark was the ONLY Bass player EVEN over Sonny T., who Prince himself said was the best bass player he ever had and Sonny T. was an early idol of Prince's! If I'm not mistaken BrownMark is with The Revolution right? So not all those OTHER musicians or bands were better than The Revolution musicians. Lmao!!! STOP IT, STOP it.
      Be Nice.

      In all fairness, not all of the Time songs were written solely by him. Jungle Love's basic melody was Jesse. I have heard the demo. But that being said, people do lie about Prince and exaggerate their input sometimes--Sheila E still trying to say she wrote Glamorous Life...Nope, that is provably wrong..(by studio logs, his original demo, Jill Jones, and sound engineers). The truth is that the reality is messy and grey. And Jesse accidently didn't give credit to Prince once for his very original production and arrangement of the song "Do Yourself A Favor" 'and only gave credit to the original writer Pepe Willie and himself. So things happen. SOTT songs are basic blueprints redone after the Rev left...(not talking about Crystal Ball and Dream Factory though).

At the end of the Controversy tour, we were sitting around a hotel room, just the Time members, and Terry said, “I want to go to L.A. and make some demos. But you are right, Prince did most of the Time music on the first two albums. Thats why prince had each of them sign disclosure forms. He's dead and they still scared to tell the whole truth. They sugar coat the abuse and beat around the bush. But if U pay attention and read inbetween the lines..U can put it together.

      Prince worked a thousand times harder than anyone else and he knew how to make an idea successful, that's his secret of success. No one would probably know a Morris Day without Prince. Prince was the driving power and a workaholic, spending most times of his life in stdios without windows and sunlight, not sleeping a lot and always producing. Who else wants that kind of a dark life? Are Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis the two only guys around Prince who I ve never heard saying a bad word about Prince?

    Engineer/producer David Z provided the history of the Kiss. Mark's contribution to the final song were his background vocals. Prince handed David melody and lyrics to Kiss, they handed in a hum drum tune but Prince liked David's additions so kept those and gave him credit. The stripped down, minimalist, bass-less falsetto funk piece, with signature guitar fluorish, melody and lyrics, final product was Prince. Prince's original demo - ruclips.net/video/XXMGp_7vl8w/видео.html
    Parts of David Z's interview in Sound on Sound - Prince 'Kiss':
    www.soundonsound.com/people/prince-kiss
    "One day, he called me and said, 'There's a group that I've just signed and want you to have something to do with. Come to LA.' So, I went there, walked into Sunset Sound, and he said, 'You're going to produce this group called Mazarati.' That was the first time I'd been labelled a producer, which I'm very grateful for. It got me started.”
    "Anyway, starting with a LinnDrum, I programmed the beat and began experimenting. Taking a hi-hat from the drum machine, I ran it through a delay unit and switched between input and output and in the middle. That created a very funky rhythm. Then I took an acoustic guitar, played these open chords and gated that to the hi-hat trigger. The result was a really unique rhythm that was unbelievably funky but also impossible to actually play... I'm sure that sound influenced the fabulous new Daft Punk song 'Get Lucky', because it uses the same trick, with the guitar gated to some sort of rhythm and sequencer.
    "Next, I remembered a little piano part from a Bo Diddley song called 'Say Man' and put it on there, and then Tony Christian sang the lead part, an octave lower than what Prince wound up doing. The background vocals I adapted from the Brenda Lee song 'Sweet Nothings' - good music is always taken from somewhere else - and that was that. The whole thing was done in a day.”
    Hijacked
    Or David Z and the guys in Mazarati thought it was. The fact is, in this form 'Kiss' sounded OK - a so-so dance number. However, Tony Christian's lead vocal was a little soulless and uninspiring, and when Prince heard the track he decided to head in a different direction... with himself at the helm.
    "When I came back into the studio the next morning, Prince had already taken it off the machine, replaced the vocal with his own falsetto performance - which, I guess, he felt it needed - got rid of the bass part and added a James Brown 'Papa's Got A Brand New Bag' guitar lick,” Z recalls. "'What happened?' I asked, to which he replied, 'It's too good for you guys. I'm taking it back.'”
    Boasting a four-octave range, Prince sang virtually the entire song in head voice, reverting to chest voice for the final line, as well as a single note before the last chorus. "At the time, I think he was into using a [Sennheiser MD] 441,” says Z.
    "It was so different to everything else out there that the Warner Brothers executives freaked out when they first heard it,” David Z confirms. "I was going to get credit as the producer, arranger, everything, but when I talked to the Warners A&R guy he said, 'Oh man, Prince really screwed up. It sucks.' I thought, what? My heart just hit the floor. He said, 'It sounds like a demo. There's no reverb, there's no bass - it's terrible.'
    "I was shaken and really disappointed. At that time, however, Prince had enough power to go, 'That's the single and you're not getting another one until you put it out.' The rest is history."

I have been on this earth so much longer than you and been where you are going. It amazes me how much more you need to mature. Brown is full of it - 3rdEyeGirl was put together in 2012 (not 2015) their album Plectrumelectrum was released in 2014. Bassist Ida Nielson had been working with Prince from 2010. So Prince did not fly Brown out in 2015 for the project as claimed.
    "Right before Prince passed a year before he passed, he had flown me up to Minneapolis because he wanted me to look into a project with him. This new thing he was putting together - it ended up being 3rdEyeGirl - which, I'm not a girl so I didn't fit the bill, but it was going to be something different for that. So we got to talking and... "

    You know I see it like this. People in this life are chosen a path based on the events surrounding their lives. It's like what Prince wrote on his Controversy Album. Children only imitate their atmosphere. Life for Prince was, here is my Dad, a genius musician. He was frustrated for not taking his life to the ultimate with his indelible gift. He was challenged in life with his size and his circumstances. Trust issues. He internalized and imagined and realized all of this success. He probably didn't know how the outcome would be. In come people on the road. He had to protect that vision. Brown Mark coming into his life adventitiously. So there is no circumventing here, you have to be sharp. He is not going to cut the ckae even. He doesn't have too. In fact management wouldn't allow him too. He said they were a Band. Yes,they were. Prince's Band regardless what he says. They were their because he was there. The head chef like Wendy evokes truthfully in public. He was the head chef with the vision. Was he perfect ? No!. But, we know all of them, because he existed. Publicly anyway. I still like his story,he has come into his own. I had the chance to see him play with Prince in Madison Square Garden. He's tall Brother. Prince kind of had him in the background on the Parade tour. But his presence was potent in the band.

    1:14:00 - When BrownMark is talking about sign of the times he’s sort of wrong but he is also partially correct. As early spring of 1986 dream factory would’ve been the next revolution album or project and we know he used a lot of Wendy and Lisa at that time. Yet once the album changed into being crystal ball before it became sign of the times and that was mostly a solo effort from Prince. So was Camille was a solo effort in Sept/Oct 86’. By the time September - October 1986 the revolution was no more. He sounds very bitter to me yet I look forward to his book. Very fascinating interview.

    The biggest difference in perspective between P & the Revolution (especially Wendy, Lisa & Mark) is that P seemed to ultimately see the Revolution (& Morris, Andre, etc) as extensions of himself...not much different than say, his Linn Drum machine; while THEY saw the entire group as a BAND (one for all, all for one...MUCH like Mark himself described Mazarati, ironically). So when after starting an ultra collaborative album like Dream Factory and then P fires them, they're stunned. I get both sides of it: P incentivized them to give him their all by making them feel like a part of the process...but he was ALWAYS going to be the Jordan to their Bulls regardless...And notice they almost ALL to a person dropped everything they were doing and came when P called?

      Andre quit. Lisa and Wendy threatened to quit and then were fired. Mark started to want his own band and expressed discontent and then quit after the ladies were fired. Fink stuck around and never worked outside the band as far as I know. Prince had abandonment issues and was originally promoted as a one-man band..how do you think he would respond to people doing side projects, threatening to quit and wanting more credits and input? And by the way, Mark talked about Mazarati...like he was Mazarati..not just a member of their band. Ironic that he doesn't mind referring to himself that way but can't even call Prince his boss.

      People constantly underestimate the skill with which Prince created the Revolution band to his high expectations. He arranged the music and had the band practise until he was satisfied with the sound of the band. Warner Brothers signed Prince alone as an artist, then told him to get a band to go on tour. Prince first several albums were him alone playing all instruments. WB paid the band through Prince. The band was not signed to WB, hence Prince could fire them. Prince brought the best of a person’s talent to the forefront because he was a great band leader.

    Great interview, @mdean.👏🏿👏🏿 You ask great questions. I really like that you did not ask BrownMark the "typical" P/Revolution questions! Also, thanks for avoiding the spoilers!
    I heard BrownMark on "another podcast"
    Let's just say that Mark seemed way more chill here w/you (Just sayin').
    Appreciate this statement at 6:30-7:30 ~>real deal👏🏿.
    IMO, I don't think BrownMark sounds "angry". Ppl need to get a grip that sometimes P was not right, even to those closest to him. Some in the purple universe have P floating on some purple
    cloud--as if he's not subject to criticism.
    BrownMark sums it best at 44:44-45:15
    Anyway, cool interview. 👏🏿👏🏿 I plan to check out his book now. Btw, I kept an open mind and read Mayté's book thanks to Podcast Juice review.😁

      People don't sanctify Prince like that. No one is saying Mark Brown has to sugar-coat. You might be missing the point of why some fans are weary of this book.

      "People don't sanctify Prince like that." Interesting statement. Perceptions of Prince vary but that is not what I see happening in the purple fandom...not before and certainly not after P's passing. Everyone is entitled to their opinion of BrownMark and others in the purple camp. I just don't have to ride with it. Peace.

      @@LMichelle_bklyn88 They glorify his work and legacy. But podcasts and panel discussion and fan discussions that air grievances are not rare. Almost all the books (except for a few photo books) contain criticisms and complaints as well.. People talk about his bad side all the time... (sometimes the interviewers are actually asking them to tell them something bad about him.) Just because they don't elaborate on it fully or lose their temper discussing it , it doesn't mean its not discussed. It is sad to me that if a podcast or interview doesn't at least include one indication of him being unkind, people assume that is sanctification. Is it wrong to focus on the good sides of people? None of us are without faults.. including the people talking ABOUT Prince's. But really its not discussing his faults that is the problem...it is about balance. Sometimes, when people say they love Prince and that he was family and then proceed to ONLY discuss his faults (I have seen this happen), it makes me totally doubt their sincerity...like saying they love him is merely obligatory. They do such a piss poor job of explaining why they love him IN SPITE of his faults, that I just assume that they don't really love him at all. PRN alumni discussions can be this way sometimes.

      @@LMichelle_bklyn88 You haven't been on Prince.org then. The word "asshole" is not uncommonly used in description of him on his own fan page. Hardcore fans, ironically, sometimes were his harshest critics...especially the ones from the 80's.

    there's an interview where Mark says he last spoke with him a year or so before he passed, he also said prince asked him "where's your guitar" as if he didn't know he played bass. in this interview he says the last time was before third eye which would have to be somewhere around 2012.

      Yes, his dates are really off because he wasn't in the picture after the Revolution was disbanded. Times was mostly all Prince. I read the liner notes on the CDs. I say CDs because I became a fan in 89 and bought the 80s albums in the 90s. Sounds like the 80s were awesome, I was a kid then.
