I'm french canadian and the only thing I would give as an advice to anyone wanting to move to Montreal is that if at some points you want to visit other cities in the province of Québec like Quebec city, Gaspésie etc. you will most likely need at least some basic French. Also, being bilingual in both language is a really huge plus and like said can sometime be required depending on your job industry. Indeed, it's true that some french people doesn't like english speaking people, there's a long history behind it but I would say, as long as you're making an effort/showing effort the french peeps will appreciate it :) I think what french peeps get angry on is when some english people doesn't care/show no interests in learning basic french despite living in a french province!

I noticed that too. When I went on a road trip towards Gaspesie, the fact that we even tried to speak in french made the locals really happy. Not to mention they were some of the nicest people. Locals were friendly and tried to help us as much as possible. They just want you to try which is completely understandable.

end of story, if you're going to be a resident of the province of Québec (in or out of Montreal) it's important that you try to learn some french out of RESPECT for the rest of the francophone population in that province and city. And just so you know, all political assemblies in Québec (on the provincial level) are in french, provincial owned stores communicate in french, and everywhere you go, you are assured to get a french service. You can't go to a store and have none of the employees speak a word of french.
and like Zoe said in her video, as long as people see that you're trying to use a bit of french, quebecois are really respectful of your efforts in 99% of the time and will gladly help you with their broken english and teach you a french word or two

Quick analysis for people wanting to settle and live in Montréal. French vs English edition.
If you want to live in Montréal and live in French, don't want to learn English: Go to the far east of the city. If you want to learn English but live in French, go center east or downtown.
If you want to live in Montréal and live in English, don't want to learn French: Go to the far west of the city. If you want to learn French but live in English, go center west or downtown.
Downtown is where culture and languages all blend. If you do settle in Montréal I would at least recommand knowing French basics because of the law 101 that helps us protect the French language. I won,t go into details, you gotta know the history of Canada to understand the law 101's legitimacy. TLDR: we're kind of the last rampart of French (there's 1 million of French speaker outside of Québec too), surrounded by 330 million English speakers.
I wouls also suggest to learn French if you come just out of respect, people will appreciate the effort. What Zoe said is true, we tend to switch to English pretty quick because your French will be bad when you first start learning it, which is totally normal and fine, but we do appreciate it deep down, we just want to accomodate you. So if you want to practice it, just say "no, no, I want to practice my French please, I want to get better." We will really be grateful. Have a safe trip, it is a great city, it has its flaws like everywhere else, but it's is a beautiful city. As we say here: Montréal, je t'aime. (Montréal, I love you)

As a French-speaking Montrealer, I would highly recommend learning a bit of French if you want to live here. For me, it's a question of respect. We don't care if your English is not perfect, but we do appreciate anglophones making an effort. Most of us do speak English, so why not return the respect? So in that sense, it's hard to understand why a lot of people don't make an effort, not even to say "Bonjour". And I understand that it's Zoe's experience that English is not required for her work, but if you don't know a minimum of French, many employers will not even return a phone call, specially if it's a customer-facing job. It is a French province after all.

Although it is possible to live in Montreal without speaking French, it is important to know that there is only one official language in Québec, and it is French. It means that it is the official language of work and the official language of education. It is important to know as it may avoid some frustrations: Your employer is not forced by law to provide contracts or work-related information in other language then French and unless you are willing to pay a lot of money annually, your kids will get an education in French unless you have a historical right.

I just want to add some more info for vegetarians; Montreal has a lot of vegan and vegetarian friendly restaurants that are affordable. Even at non-vegetarian restaurants and fast-food joints there are plenty of decent meatless options and if not, staff are usually pretty good with removing meat or putting it on the side (for your friends and family who may eat it) if you ask. I highly encourage you to do your research! "Pushap" for example is a really great cheap vegetarian Indian restaurant, and Warehouse has really cheap (but also a bit small in portion) sized vegan, meat and vegetarian friendly options as well.

Uff... I don't want to be a Debbie downer, but being proficient in French (not just kind of good) is definitely important if you want to live and work here. Sure, you might find a job at a multi-national type of company where your English will be enough, or you can get the lowest of the lowest income jobs (flipping burgers, loading FedEx trucks). But basically, if your French isn't good enough you'll only have access to about 10-15% of job opportunities. Not only that, but when you leave your anglophone bubble, you'll come across people who don't know speak any English. And that doesn't apply just to people outside of Montréal. For instance, my boyfriend's mom who's lived and worked here as a law professor all of her adult life still doesn't speak any English. Long story short: LEARN YOUR FRENCH!!!!! It's not only respectful towards the culture you are kindly welcomed into, but very important for your social and professional life.

I call it my "hometown" for sure. Having to learn french came to me at High School, but definitely got used to speaking the language when I started working. Good luck to you and hope you get to explore MORE of the city post Covid! xo

Nice video! Just a thing I want to say about the woman laughing to the bad prononciation of an employee - I might be wrong, but personally, I find it disrespectful from the employee or the company (I guess it was Via). People paid to do communication in french should be able to prononce, not perfectly, but at least ... not awfully. Many times, in airplanes for example, we have to listen to security measures in english because the one in french are inaudible.

I find this video super , fun & informative...I have been in Montreal since a long while...LOVE the general vibe
But I sure wish the city
    would be more helpful &
    compassionate towards
    people with Environmental Sensitivities...Zoe Pritchard
I agree with what you answered regarding the person asking about a roach problem, yet bed bugs( even though I have
never had them...) are somewhat of a problem in many ...
Also I have noticed that some buildings & even building directors tend to
exterminate sometimes without taking into consideration of the side effects to people's health..In one particular case of witch I know the
story, no one seems to help
someone sick for 11yrs from frequent abusive exterminations..the rental board, the city, even the Minister of Health of Quebec ALL TURN a blind eye..you have no proof(the general answer or redirect etc.)...
The person can't get a lawyer..plus is going through further complications from his persistence to demand help...SAD BUT TRUE...JUST WANTED
    THE TRUTH OUT THERE...
Sorry if this comment seems negative...I really LOVE Montreal and HOPE
the city upgrades and narcissistic people
    in position of power don't
    ruin it for everyone else...
It is hard to ask for change without pointing out faults...thank you
    for a great video...
