With its astonishingly sophisticated use of melody and harmony for its time, its lyrical and graceful outer movements and the exquisitely beautiful central Adagio that has made it so famous, the Oboe Concerto No. 1 is widely regarded as Marcello’s finest masterpiece (if, indeed, it was composed by Marcello: in his fascinating liner notes, musical director Giorgio Sassi suggests that the piece could have been composed by Albinoni or even Bach himself).
This release also features Marcello’s six concertos published under the title “La Cetra”. The concertos could be regarded as a last outpost of the late-Baroque style, with features that anticipate the development of Classicism, and they showcase a remarkably wide range of expression, atmosphere and timbre, which is done full justice in these consummate performances by acclaimed early music specialists Insieme Strumentale di Roma. The ensemble boasts an extensive and enthusiastically received discography, and has been praised for its ‘stylish and sweetly modulated performances’ and ‘warmth, spirit and sensitivity’.

Wunderschöne Interpretation dieser sieben kompakten und fein komponierten Konzerte mit herrlichem doch gut phrasiertem Ton der genialen Solo-Oboe sowie gut vereinigten und perfekt entsprechenden Tönen der anderen Instrumente. Der intelligente und ebenso geniale Dirigent leitet das ausgezeichnete Barockensemble in verschiedenen Tempi und mit künstlerisch kontrollierter Dynamik. Alles ist wundervoll!

The Oboe Concerto in D minor, S D935, is an early 18th-century composition for oboe, strings and continuo attributed to the Venetian composer Alessandro Marcello. The Concerto composed in three movements was published by Jeanne Roger at Amsterdam in 1717. Marcello’s style is High Baroque, already foreshadowing the Classical Style, music of great depth and emotion, richly scored for a wide variety of solo instruments and continuo. She showcase a remarkably wide range of expression, atmosphere and timbre, but also for its stylish and sweetly modulated performances. This oboe concerto is probably the most beautiful of the Baroque period. Marcello composed several collections of soloist concertos, six of which were collected under the title La Cetra, as well as a few cantatas. He published his works under the pseudonym of Eterio Stinfalico. Johann Sebastian Bach was very influenced by Italian music, notably Vivaldi, Corelli, Torelli, Marcello and maybe others. A sincere work is that which is gifted with enough force to give reality to a dream. *Lucien*

Much as i love (and play) the piano transcription of the adagio from the d minor concerto, it just cant be given the “cantabile” of the oboe, even by any genius pianist. Such a beautiful rendition of an utterly knock-out movement in the whole of baroque music. Remind anyone of Moricone?! Thank you!!
