HISTORY
Opened in 1845, Theatre Royale is Manchester’s oldest surviving theatre building and is Grade II Listed.
The buildings architect was John Gould Irwin & Francis Chester constructing the theatre out of sandstone ashlar, holding a capacity of 1000 people.
The buildings owner in 1845 was John Knowles who wanted to construct a theatre venue in the city.
1871 saw alterations to the theatre with architect Edward Saloman designing the extensions.
The building operated as a theatre from 1845 to 1921 when it was then converted into a cinema from 1921 onwards, keeping the name Theatre Royale.
1961 like so many cinema’s in Britain, a decline met with the refurbishment into a bingo hall, and a re-name to Theatre Royale Bingo.
In 1972 the bingo hall closed and the building re-opened as Coxy’s Bar.
1978 saw the opening of the Discotheque Royale Night Club.
The Discotheque closed in 1990 and with new ownership, the building re-opened as M-Two Nightclub from 1990 up until 2010.
The building closed for good after 170 years in 2010.
