I live about 20 minutes from College park MD. I am in Gaithersburg. This area's rent is insane. Same with northern VA and DC. A one bedroom apartment can easily go for $2,400 utilities NOT included. Her rent is actually kind of cheap for this area.
I find it crazy that people DON'T know where chunks of deposits come from in their accounts when Caleb is reviewing them...like that's super strange to NOT know.
I've been saying this for years, but no one believes me. I had friends that used student loans to buy cars, eat out all the time, trips to Mexico for spring break and just to party. I am not against some loan forgiveness, but I don't understand why I need to play for my friend's $20k car, when that lazy guy didn't want to work at all in college. This is the first video I’ve watched in a while of yours… and I still have similar thoughts as before. You need to be interviewing people who are older than 25 but ideally 30. Everyone’s a disaster as a student. And not many people can do much about it at 21. They can’t really increase their income. They can’t really spend much less (vast majority of spending is required generally). Looking at older people would be more valuable because it’s people who really can change their habits etc
bruh, I can already imagine Caleb go "you have a credit card debt, you can not afford to pay 300$+ to have a session with" if I book with Caleb after watching this episode lol
@@jaketorpepper-king3930 agreed. I'm just stating, if they ARE forgiven, there needs to be an audit that the loans being forgiven went to tuition and actual living expenses, not just on irresponsible decisions.
My daughter lives in graduate housing at University of Maryland. $750.00 a months for her share (she has a roommate). If Daryl stays at the school he can benefit from cheaper housing. Still won’t need a car, the school is adding shopping, gyms, etc. on campus.
I don't get the federal student loan forgiveness thing. I agree the costs is too high and their profit too large, but you know the cost when you sign up for it with intention that the skill and qualification you get from it will allow you higher pay jobs and pay that debt back. And they're more reasonable than private loans. Why should tax payers be left covering the debt you took out over several years and should be able to repay after you start your career? And if you went into a useless study that has no real world value and no job prospect, that is on you. Reducing the costs of all the overpriced costs and fees I'm 100% behind, but it's only fair you pay back the debt you knowingly took out to pursue your dream career.
Chicken, rice, beans, eggs, and cereal are healthy and inexpensive Oh and obviously make your coffee at home for pennies on the dollar I wouldn't recommend being on a ramen diet
alot of people take out student loans to finance their lifestyle yet they are the first ones to scream how the system isn't fair and that the gov't needs to pay off their loans smh
All these college kids talking about saving for retirement… do people really start before they even have a full time job? Like I know I’ve started late, but when I do the math I should be fine, so why are they 20 year olds worrying so much about it? I get that the earlier you start the better off you’ll be but I don’t think I once thought about retirement at 20 lol
It's better to start as soon as possible. Most people have their first job at age 14. If you start investing then and not even a lot. You would have so much more at age 18 than someone starting at age 25 or forbid 30 contributing 20 percent until age 55+.
I recently learned to how to make bread with just flour and water 😅 Awe, I hope you're okay with gluten. Cereal and milk will last a while. Ah, it's just that even hot dogs and ramen also add up. Maybe it wasn't literal 😅😓

Caleb, what do you think about refinancing? I took out student loans every year of college at rates ranging from 4-8%, and refinanced to a rate of 3.83%.
Wait how are you supposed to pay rent without taking out loans? I got a full ride scholarship and worked part time but still couldn’t afford rent without $20k in (federal) loans. Do y’all just have college funds from your parents??
I understand this kid made some big mistakes financially but whats the point of going to college to struggle and starve? This is why kids take out those predatory private student loans because they get tired of struggling so hard.
Coming from somebody who went to work and never went to college and got a good job and did all the things that all these people talk about doing I literally hate when they talk about loan forgiveness. Why would I forgive someone if they clearly cannot understand the value of a dollar
Speaking from experience, young people need to think long and hard about whether their college experience is worth it. Journalism? Less fun, more waiting tables. College isn't Disney World.
Honestly if he got a job it wouldn't be as scary. The debt isn't anything crazy. It's just the interest rate. If they can get a job and make enough to pay rent, and pay at least double or triple the minimum payments, it won't take too long to pay them off. I'm with Caleb though. Sacrifice fun now for more fun later.
Taking out student loans, then using them for anything other than educational purposes, should be considered fraud and the person prosecuted for it. This kind of crap is why some people cannot get behind student loan forgiveness. That person with student loan debt will be putting that money back into the economy. They will be purchasing things, not hoarding the money. Stop trying to punch down, look up.
Imho Caleb missed the boat on this one. Daryl chose this institution and program based on the grants and scholarships they were offered. How much are they saving on tuition? Would it be acceptable if loans were covering tuition and “free money” everything else? Loans (yes, 12% interest is bad) are helping with total cost of attendance, which could be lowered by lowering needs as in every other audit on this show. Criticizing the academic program without understanding it is unhelpful and working a job for 6 hours/week is pretty standard I.e. when assisting with research. Any useful take-always were buried in the pile of assumptions made and “if only” wishful thinking about how they got themselves into this mess.
What about food stamps? Shouldn't he qualify with no income? I know relying on government assistance is not being financially responsible but in this position I can't imagine not applying for food stamps.
Are people not taught to stay away from debt? Why is there no fear of borrowing? Im in the middle to older Millennial generation anf i just never thought this way. Sorry, i dont subscribe to the idea that loans can be predatory. At the end of the day, people have agency. You have to make good choices and in many cases, that means sacrifices.
There is no way living on campus wouldn’t be cheaper than her rent. And normally colleges have some kind of work and learn program where are you do a job at the school and they cover your living
Student housing for me was 10k for the year, kicking us out on holidays like thanksgiving, Christmas break and all of summer. Was much cheaper to live off campus.
it’s almost impossible to live on campus as a senior. i also didn’t know if i was going to commute or live in the area so by the time I decided to live in your campus, the on-campus apartment deadline had already passed. if i was able to, i would’ve applied for on-campus housing.
Not true. You only can do work study if you qualify for it, ie you or your parents don't make to much. I know some students that moved off campus because it was much cheaper than living on campus.
I went to UMD as a transfer student and couldn't live on campus. Cheapest rent I could find was at least $900-1000 a month without utilities, and that was charged per bedroom in a 4x4! That was about 5 years ago now - so I can only imagine the price jump nowadays! That area is insane and affordable housing was hard to come by since it's in such high demand. Plussss its not the *safest* area so I completely understand not wanting to walk too far.

There are many 4-year degrees that do not pay back what you put in. College isn't valuable. I suggest making college cheaper for lower potential degrees. Selling kids on the false hope of earning six figures with an Underwater Basket Waving Degree is where I see the failure.
@@kylem2010GT Here is the solution, the colleges should provide the loans to the students! If they believe in their product then there should be no issues.
Well, the biggest part of the equation is the borrower. There has to be more if not all blame there.
Internships are overrated. The right real life work experience is worth as much if not more than an internship, which after he has his degree he can easily achieve.
There needs to be better tracking of where student loan money is actually going.
😩😩😩😩
@@CalebHammer do you not believe that student loans should be going towards tuition? Some private schools are 70k a year! There is no money allocated for eating out, buying a car, or fooling around. I’d rather pay for others education rather than their own fun activities.

I think you will like tomorrows video then :)

Any potential student loan forgiveness should be audited like taxes are. Make sure the funds for the loan are used to pay for education not fun
there should be no forgiveness, period
@@jaketorpepper-king3930 well you don’t get to decide that. So…
@@jaketorpepper-king3930 agreed.

Yes. I didn’t start seriously saving for retirement until I was about 29. My twenties were about stabilizing myself, financially.
It's better to start as soon as possible. Most people have their first job at age 14. If you start investing then and not even a lot. You would have so much more at age 18 than someone starting at age 25 or forbid 30 contributing 20 percent until age 55+.

Coming from somebody who went to work and never went to college and got a good job and did all the things that all these people talk about doing I literally hate when they talk about loan forgiveness. Why would I forgive someone if they clearly cannot understand the value of a dollar
Yes 😮😮😮🎉
Speaking from experience, young people need to think long and hard about whether their college experience is worth it. Journalism? Less fun, more waiting tables. College isn't Disney World.
She way overpaid for a journalism degree
"If I was able to borrow more from the government, I would have"....
I went to umd but dont know if this would be the case there but i get a free nyts subscription through my current university
I dont think this person realizes what a 12% interst rate is going to do... they may never be able to pay the loan off depending how much is racked up
This is stressful
Taking out student loans, then using them for anything other than educational purposes, should be considered fraud and the person prosecuted for it. This kind of crap is why some people cannot get behind student loan forgiveness.
I for one an sick of heard people taking out student loans and buying vehicles, going on trips/vacation, paying for marriages, and all that kind of crap.

I don't know how people smile when they talk about bad things like that's just so bizarre for me
Happy people take life as it comes. They don't wallow in misery. You can't always choose what happens to you but you can choose your reaction.
And normally colleges have some kind of work and learn program where are you do a job at the school and they cover your living

if i was able to, i would’ve applied for on-campus housing.
Not true. You only can do work study if you qualify for it, ie you or your parents don't make to much. I know some students that moved off campus because it was much cheaper than living on campus.
I think you should only rent a apartment in college if you have one or two roommates that you can trust.
