  • Once an orchard has passed its prime production, it will be torn out and replanted. Part of that removal process is grinding up the trees into small chips of wood. Check out the machine that gets it done!

    My name is Ryan Valk and I am a California farmer. Most important to me though, I am a husband, and a father. Many people that I have met in my life have told me that when they thought of California, they thought of a crowded city or a beach covered in surfers. What you may not know is that California is the leading state in agricultural production! We have an extremely rich history of farming here in the "Golden State". My goals with this channel are to share my family's story of our farm/ranch here in the Central Valley of California, to share cool videos of the day to day operations and grind of a California farmer, and to explore other farms and ranches throughout my area. If you enjoy tractors, trucks, farming, learning, exploring, life lessons and experiences, and a good laugh, this is the place for you.

    Great video and very nice of Zak to give such a detailed description of what was going on and including costings - most contractors won't tell you things like that. Thanks for sharing.

    Tons of power! I've seen orchards all ripped up driving up the 5 and always wondered what the next step was. Cool!

    $600-$800/ac to grind and haul off the chips seems really cheap to me. No wonder so many orchards are ripped up (and seemingly always planted with grapes).

    Ok. But, why do those.piles get burned and pollute more? We don't need any smoke for any reason in the air.

      Biomass plants don't produce much smoke

      @@brians9633 not.from what I've seen with my own eyes. Besides, any smoke, at any means is unnecessary. I feel it's wrong and you should research it more. Don't ad any smoke. Mulch fields instead. Make it free if it too much. Just stop putting more smoke into our air. There's my point.

    Would they let a guy buy just a couple trees for the wood? I need some walnut-pecan-almond wood :)

    • @LMBrown3900
      @LMBrown3900 2 года назад

      Bio-composting and nutrient recycling aside, the actual USE of the wood (harvest?) from those otherwise chipped up trees would seem to be a natural "off-shoot" industry of the Green Revolution.

    why do you do this instead of burning the trees? I'm from Spain and here it's expensive to hire this machines for grinding the trees

      @@davidsquall351 Really? It's only wood....not fossil fuel. In Spain when we use this machines is for making natural fuel for the domestic boilers... but we would never think of using that expensive machine for throwing the final product at the floor..... Furthemore, the almond BTU is so high

    Have you seen the photo of roots from native plants vs. roots from Agricultural crops? Seems like ripping up monocrop trees repeatedly from the ground is only going to contribute to drought and dust bowl like conditions. This practice seems antithetical to regeneration. Thank you for sharing though, otherwise people wouldn't even know about this practice.

    • @CaliforniaFarmer

      These orchards are only ripped out after 25 years. An almond tree won’t produce enough to harvest until it’s 3 years old.
