- I love collecting original comic art, for the beauty of the pages, exploring the process and a love of the history of comics storytelling. Over time I've found that my collection has filled up with a lot of Conan art, which turns out to be relatively easy to collect.
Those pages are unreal
Time to find some Jim Lee Conan art! Thanks for stopping by my friend.
"Crom, I have never prayed to you before. I have no tongue for it. Valor pleases you, so grant me this one request. Grant me original art work! And if you do not listen, the HELL with you!"
Thank you for sharing Sleepy, beautiful collection 😎
Thanks Easy Comic Reader. I don't know if Crom has ever answered anyone's prayers...but I hope he makes an exception for you.
Crom!!! Those are amazing pieces! I love the Buscema prelims and Alcala's inks. Seeing original comic art is always inspiring. Thank you for sharing them.
Thanks Brandon. I enjoy the prelims a lot...and seeing Alcala's ink work in the original is wonderful.
Love seeing original art like this. Especially Conan. One of my favorites
You'll have to look through my original art collection some day. Thanks for stopping by Scott.
Very nice pages! The top page of the Frankenstein'd one is using paper that you brush a chemical on to get the patterns.
Oh, okay that makes sense. I was imagining some kind of scratch paper, but it was way too thin for that…
I wonder if they still make paper like that.
Awesome Conan original art Damian! Cool comic strips and preliminary art, too! Nice Barbaric t-shirt! Enjoy your weekend!👍✌️🤙
Thanks Sean. I love that Barbaric shirt. I ought to find a good Conan shirt!
Holy crap!! That is fantastic!
Beckermin would be proud ❤❤🎉
I didn’t know Bekermin collected art!
Really like the Barbaric shirt. The collection looked amazing. Thanks for sharing.
Hey hey Mike!
I think may have become a tee shirt collector
I just finished watching your Original Art Hour episode with Kavi. Great collection! I especially loved the two Kirby pages and the two Gene Colan pages! I plan to watch this video next! 👍😉
Thanks for tracking down these videos Karen, as I don’t make it easy on those curious about my OG art collection.
I picked up a Gene Colan Wonder Woman page recently. Hopefully more of those will come on the market, as it's a more affordable way to get some nice Colan work.
As much as I love the pencil and inked work I really really enjoy the rough and sketchy preliminary ones. Its just a friendly reminder to myself that professionals dont always draw super tight and ITS OK, relax!
Exactly! Great point. Behind the finished work is always lots of loose "sloppy" looking prep work. And if you're just drawing for fun, loose and sketchy is probably better for many of us anyway.
All great pieces! I didn't know that even the newspaper strip art was for sale. Thank you for showing these! Here's hoping you'll be comfortable showing more from you collection.
Thanks Jackson. It seems everything is for sale! But mostly, there's just so much Conan material out there there's a good chance of finding something. Now that you mention, I'm kind of wanting more of those comic strips, if I can find them.
WOW! Awesome collection of Conan original art, Damian! Really liked seeing the finished art in contrast/comparison to the original pieces, great idea! BUSCEMA! AWESOME! Very nice pieces by Alcala! I never get tired of seeing Buscema's art, excellent work! Like that pin-up piece you showed last, cool fun piece. Love the special B & W effect at the end! Incredible stuff, Damian, thanks for sharing them with us, my friend!
Thanks Rod. My "new" way of getting into comics has been a lot of fun.
That half inked page is actually cool
I agree...it's nice to have more than one stage in the process to look at on one page. Thanks for dropping by and commenting.
Loved seeing the art. I watched with Joe and loved it.
Very cool…glad you both watched it.
Fascinating trove you have there. I'm a little amazed at the prelims; from what little I've seen Buscema's pencils are not much more detailed, and he was cranking out so many pages I never imagined he'd have time for the extra step.
The Kwapisz spread is beautiful...it reminds me of the Alex Nino pieces that appeared in Warren books with all of the duotone shading.
Kayanan was drawing in a heavily Barry Windsor-Smith derived style on some of the early Conan the Adventurer comics and in fact did a direct sequel to the BWS Red Nails story that appeared in Savage Sword. If you search his art, he's done some wonderful work. The closest I have to original Conan art is that Windsor-Smith Red Nails "Original Art Archives" artist edition. It's strange how loose some of the lines look when they reduced to such precision.
That's a good point Russ, about the prelims and how fast Buscema worked, often more a breakdowns situation than full pencils. In fact the first time I bought a Buscema prelim (from a Thor annual) I wondered if it was what the inker (Dezuniga in this case) had worked from, as all the basics were totally in place. But if those were what Buscema handed off to the inkers, they were on very rough paper! It's a little puzzling. But perhaps it was actually faster in the long run for Buscema to do more prep before making a final version to send to inkers.
i've collected some of the Kyanan issues of Conan, but I don't think I've actually read many yet, and I probably need to read them to focus in on everything he was doing as an artist.
Good for you for grabbing that Red Nails OG archive book...hard to find now! I can't even imagine what an original page of Red Nails art would go for.
I love the Buscema preliminary art pages, where you can see how he works and thinks and go through the motion. Fascinating. I only have three pages of original art, one by Muth, two by Cowan. Back then, I paid 100, 20 and 50 USD for the pages. Now, original art (I just had a quick look) is 400 usd and up. Jeeesus. I don't mind the quite pieces. I have a GREAT Cowan from The Question where Sage is bribing a cop. Love it. To me, it's not about the character, but how the artist solved the "problem" (the writing.)
Wow the skeches are the best !#;$!
I'm a huge fan of the loose sketches...especially from a really great artist, of course.
Thats unfinished Buscema is super interesting. I love seeing original concepts and comparing it to the finished project. Great collection
I love that too…the process brings me closer to the human hand at work on this material I love.
Cheers CJ.
Awsome stuff Damien, great show as always my friend
Thanks! Glad you came by and commented
Wow, that is amazing! You have quite the collection. Thanks for sharing!
Hey hey Brad. Glad you could stop by.
Yeah og art is where is spend my money! (well, that and giant sized hardbacks!)
Wow! There are quite a few pages more than what you showed me the last time you brought them to share. That may be because you only brought a part of your collection, but i don’t remember there being this much Conan. This was impressive and I love the art you’ve been able to accumulate! Love it! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I have accumulated a lot since I showed you my collection... I think that was 3 or more years ago. And I especially accumulated a lot of the more "minor" pieces since then
Really amazing. Obviously I'm a fan😁
Great youtube handle! Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
That's a super impressive collection of Conan you have there, well deserving of a hearty Crom!
May Crom be with you Grey. Or maybe it's better if he just leaves you alone. Thanks for stopping by!
Fantastic collection, fantastic video! I loved this look and the presentation; it was fascinating to see the focus, the patterns and the range all coming together to tell the story of a collection!
Do you have more art that we are yet to see? I'd love more such videos. Honestly this was so clear, insightful and fun that I am hard pressed to think of a better way to show and talk about original art!
Wow, thanks A. All I remember is things I wish I'd done differently…I'll have to rewatch and look for what i did right, lol.
I do have more art…some how I’m less comfortable making videos about it. I' ve been collecting it for about eight years as my finances became more flexible. But I’ll probably do another video…i do want to highlight cool work done by comics artists i love
You should do more of this. I love this kind of content
Thanks. Eventually I will do some more original art videos…though I don’t have as much of any one kind other than Conan.
@@sleepyreader666 Conan needs love too
You can see more of my collection on this video with Kavi

Awesome pages my friend !!!! Love the Alcala and Ernie Chan stuff especially but all of it is cool. Great to see you do an OA video!
Thanks Kavi. I think i showed a number of these on your channel, but it made sense for me to do all the Conan pieces together.
Hya Damien! Conan, yes! Hey, I have a couple of those Ernie Chan ones, LOL. I love the prelim art. I have a perlim art page from Conan The Rogue, wish I had a copy of it. Alfredo Alcala, beautiful. WOW, that double page spread, epic!! Very, very, impressive art, I loved it.
Nice you have some Chan pieces and some prelim art Tom. I've got nothing to rival your Adams art but I have definitely caught the original art bug!
@@sleepyreader666 It is, without a doubt, a bug I joyfully embrace, LOL.
awesome collection in various oa forms; i have a jb over jb page from one of his last conan works “death covered in gold”, which is so refined jb vs other inkers inking him
That sounds like a super great piece to own. Buscema inking him self is very tasty. His vision of line work and blacks is very refined.
Thanks for stopping by.
Ohh original art is something I really want to get into but it's $$$ lol. Awesome collection you have there.
I figure the money some people spend on slabs, I spend on art. But you definitely have to reach the point where you have a good cushion of extra spending money...always put more into your retirement funds!
Amazing preliminary artwork from Buscema! I didn’t know they sold that kind of stuff. Buscema and Alcala are brilliant. Conan art is great, even talking scenes. There’s a Red Sonja movie being filmed in Bulgaria right now. I’m looking forward to the Micronauts and ROM omnibuses that are coming next year. I looked online for original art from Micronauts number 11, but some guy bought it all. Great shirt! I have the Barbaric volume one hardback.
Greetings Max! I didn’t know there was a Red Sonja movie in the works. Fingers crossed that they get it right. :)
Amazing to think of owning whole issues worth of original art!
Some really good stuff here. Love the comic strips!
Alcala is a favorite of mine of course. Hearing you list names of inkers took me back.
That double page spread tho!!
I have to admit that before I got ahold of that Kwapisz double page spread I didn't take him very seriously as an artist...now I need to take a closer look.
The comic strips are really fun...I might have to look for more of those, as they were very affordable...at least they were when I bought them.
Part of being a bronze age fan was paying a lot of attention to inkers, I think.
Thanks for your comments, Mr. Unruly!
These art pieces are fascinating. “…at their sketchiest!” The preliminary art is wild too. The double pager…wow. I love the word penultimate and I love how you highlighted it. That was a fun video, so hope to see another one soon. I have no original art, and this aspect of collecting is interesting to me.
Original art collecting, for me anyway, is pretty addictive. I only started when I realized I had an increased level of discretionary spending money, but decided I wouldn’t enjoy spending it on key issues and slabs and that side of comic collecting.
I actually dislike both of those as well. Slabs just seem weird.
Very Nice Collection 😊
Thanks for stopping by and commenting Bigby
@@sleepyreader666 Been meaning to say something instead of just lurking 😀
Great OA sleepy
Thanks CJ!
Morning, D. Watching the collection depressed me (and no it wasn't because you said the word "s#%&a) because as I saw the beautiful work I was reminded that I can't and never will be able to draw. I can't even make straight line with a ruler. My attorneys will be in touch with the damages.
p.s. My personal computer is now working, but for long don't know. I think I emailed you about my inability to comment on videos when I used my work lap top.
I'm glad you can comment, for now, M. And I'm sad that the art-deficiency gets you down. I feel the same way about music and singing...I can't carry a tune for the life of me...when I was a small child my parents would beg me not to sing. If I had one magical wish it would be to become a decent singer or musician.
Luckily you have great verbal powers and poetic visions (I don't know if you can sing...)
@@sleepyreader666 Thank you, D. Fortunately I did not have a desire for music, even though music is important to me. It's funny your parents would beg you not to sing:) Parents, what to do with them?
I suppose my parents were dealing with three very young kids at the same time on long car rides and my wildly discordant singing was one thing too many.
You are right, Sleepy! Conan is Korean! LOL Absents of colors, makes him look more Asian. That crossed out panel looks very familiar. I want to say Red Sonja comic books... she got drugged and they dressed her like one of the slave girls or new concubine for some fat sultan. Is that issue #1 Red Sonja 's first solo title? Awesome collection Sleepy! Love it!
I need to dig up my Red Sonja number one (there might have been two Red Sonja series at Marvel back in the day, and I think Buscema did one of them).
Long live Conan the Korean! :)
@@sleepyreader666 Yes, her first solo appearance was on Marvel Feature (2nd series) #1-#7 and her first solo title was Red Sonja #1-#15.
I think Conan the Barbarian was the one that made barbarian stories popular.
I think you're right. And the original stories back in the 1930s may have been the beginning of the whole style of storytelling
@@sleepyreader666 I do know that the Arnold movie that the most boast in popularity but even before that it was popular.
@@muhammadabuzarkhan7450 Yes, in my heyday in the 70s Conan was very popular both in paperback novels and in the comics. Eventually there were about four different Conan comics coming out every month. I think all that lead to the Arnold movie, which probably brought in the next wave of Conan fans...
@@sleepyreader666 I came to Conan due to the movie as well.
Very cool, Damian
Thanks for stopping by and commenting Gus. Sorry there were no well dressed people in the entire video! ;)
@@sleepyreader666 Conan makes any rag look good :)
Like 55 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸
😎😎😎😎😎
On those, can you see the zipatone like glued or whatever they did to adhere that?
I think the zipatone came on sticky-backed translucent sheets that the artists had to cut out with exacto knives! I tried to do some of that myself back in the early eighties when I made my own fanzine...(all copies of which were thrown out by my parents!)
Muito Massa!
Thanks for checking out the video.
Penultimate!!😆
A secret shoutout to you and J!
I don't think I've ever seen a page with the art pasted on top of the lettering. Weird.
I'm wondering if they sent him the lettered boards, the way EC apparently did...or was it just because he was using that special paper to get that charcoal looking greytone pattern? Very mysterious.
@@sleepyreader666 That charcoal looked like actual charcoal to me. I'm unaware of any paper that imitates charcoal. Duoshade paper uses line patterns to make its greys.
I wanna have some original pages, where do you buy them from?
I get most of my art from Heritage auctions. I like using their app on my ipad. However it takes a lot of patience. I probably only win one out of every 30 auctions!
@@sleepyreader666 thank you
