  • As we embrace the Christmas season in Denmark, it only made sense to visit Hamlet's Kronborg Castle in Helsingør. While it is a wonderful spot in the summertime, Christmas offers it's own style of charm. We were mostly alone as we explored the insight, caught a wonderful concert of renaissance music, learned about the channel between present day Sweden and Denmark, explored the casements under the castle, and of course had some æbleskiver and glogg!
Being only 1 hour from Copenhagen or 30 minutes from our home in Lyngby it is an easy half day or day trip from the greater Copenhagen area. There is a lot more to see and do in Helsingør which we will explore further in the summer, when it isn't snowing outside.

In the basement of Kronborg also sit Holger danske (holger the dane) who was a old viking who later became knight of the France army, and the legendaries have it, that if Denmark ever gets attacked he wake up and defend Denmark. (ofcause just folklores) but been folklore since hes death in around 1250 or so.

    Awesome episode.
As a Dane living in Helsingør. If you haven't done so yet, when this whole pandemic disappear, then go to Helsingborg. There you will see another castle that also belonged to the Danes. This castle also had cannons, because the cannons at Kronborg could not shoot all the way across Øresund.
The sound dues, as you correctly mentioned, paid a lot of Denmarks finances but Christian the 4th and other kings got to greedy and this instigated the wars against Sweden which we lost after an especially daring attack by Karl Gustav the 12th. The mad lad walked his army across both the little and great belt in winter as they were frozen and completely blindsided the Danish king. Thus we lost Scania(Skåne), Halland and Blekinge.
We joke a lot, that when the time is right, we will take back Scania(Skåne), Halland and Blekinge in Sweden as they were originally Danish and middle and upper Sweden do not actually like south sweden that much, because they think it still is too Danish.

I need to explore Helsingborg more and we've talked about doing an episode when it is nicer where we ferry across and back. We have been a couple of times but mostly to stay the night after seeing a concert along the northern coast of Sweden. We'd just crash in a hotel and then get up and ferry across to head home the next morning. I've never really walked around, but we will!

Great video. Once again you increase the level of joy in me by making videos in and about Denmark.
I must however also put down in writing that I fear that the Young family fall under the spell of the "promised-land" of Sweden.
It is my hope that you don't fall into that trap. I have nothing against Swedes, but I just think they have a funny smell to them, hehe.

I'm glad you'd been told about the opposite coast historically being Danish. The ship tax is actually the very reason why it isn't anymore! The Baltic Sea is (and especially was) a major trade hub, as it is surrounded by the entire coastlines of Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland, as well most of Germany's coastline and western Russia's. Øresund is not only the shortest route but, as far as I recall, also both the deepest and calmest waters, and besides, the only alternative routes also go through Denmark anyway. So for the British, Dutch, French, Spanish, Italian, Greek, African, Asian, etc. merchants to trade with any of those countries, passing through Danish waters were the only option, giving Denmark upportunity to tax all of that trade, and of course everyone else was interested in seeing a change to that fact.
In medieval Europe, it was common for treaty negotiations between countries to host emmisaries from other countries. They would come to act both as mediators between the negotiating countries and as negotiators for their own countries' interests. Denmark and Sweden had been on-and-off warring for centuries, and two of these wars within a short time saw Denmark on its knees, one largely because fate had taken Sweden's side and given us a winter worthy of legend, freezing all the Danish straits to the point where the Swedish army could simply march right across the sea. The Swedish king Gustav had been warring in Poland and was granted passage through Germany, so he walked his army in through Denmark's back door, so to speak, up through Jutland, where he would normally have had to wait for spring in order to cross the straits and get to Zealand. The Danish king and government were aware of his movements and started planning defenses on Funen for the summer, but as fate would have it, the seas froze, allowing the Swedes to invade the completely unprepared islands through winter. A small army had assembled on Funen but wasn't quite ready yet and got trampled. Crossing the Great Belt from Funen to Zealand, parts of the Swedish army was lost when the ice gave, which had Gustav retreating to Funen, but he went on southwards across Tåsinge and Siø to Langeland, and from there succesfully across the Great Belt to Lolland, Falster, Bogø, and finally Zealand. Up through Zealand they met resistance again, but more akin to guerilla forces than any actual army, as no one could have imagined the Swedes would be there so soon. One of the local resistance leaders, nicknamed "Gøngehøvdingen", became a national folk hero then, but despite their efforts, the Swedes made it in great numbers to the capital, where the Danish government were besieged and suddenly looking at potential extinction. The Swedish government were willing to negotiate peace, but their demands were overwhelming and would make Denmark a tiny country with no real chance to compete internationally.
While some European countries were happy to see Denmark lose their mighty influence on international trade, they had no interest in seeing Sweden become an overwhelming superpower either, especially as the Swedes were looking to start collecting those taxes themselves, so they sent their emmisaries to influence the peace negotiations. So basically, diplomats from the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France, etc. showed up hand in hand and said "Sweden, we support your victory, but you're gonna drop all those demands and only take this much land from the Danes, and you're gonna be happy about it. Or else we'll have to come to Denmark's rescue here and beat you back by force. Denmark, we're saving y'all's asses here, so you're gonna hand over those lands to Sweden and you're gonna be happy about it, or else."
And just like that, Denmark and Sweden sat on each their side of Øresund, the strait became international waters, and they both had to give up on collecting those taxes.
But we all know that Skåne, Halland, and Blekinge truly belong to Denmark. 😉

@@TravelinYoung both of you have good taste regarding your "advent calendar" choice... This year its only my girl on 2,5 year, that gets something every day ( pakkekalender) some raps small presents in and hang them on a family advent calendar, others like us uses a christmas sock aka nissesokken. Its the "nisse" that gives here a present every day, if she behave and of cause gives the "nisse" som risengrød (rise porridge) 😁.. At the moment we (mom and dad) Are discussing with the nisse what to give our 2,5 year old (should it be healthy stuff, candy or other Things) 😁
Regarding beer.. Thats a tough one though. Because drinking some chrismas beers thats ok, but every time in the whole december maybe not.. But the difference of beer is large and also if its tapped or can/bottle.
Last one regarding Matador. You can get it on dvd with english subtitles. Yes its a classic and we danes love it. But I wouldnt say its a need to see but more a Nice to see, its pretty cathcy when you are half in.

Over the centuries, a lot of tax were collected on behalf of the Danish monarchs at Kronborg. In fact, ships would have to declare the value of their cargo, on the basis of which they would pay duty. And if they would declare a too low value in order to get away with paying a low amount in duty, the crown would have the right to buy the cargo at the declared value. A strong incentive not to try to cheat.
