I have seen some people repurposing off-the-shelf "personal vaping devices" for something like this - as far as I know, the liquids in those are also glycerin-based. (but the stock fluid of course contains other stuff that might not be so good, especially for kids toys, so it should be swapped out for neutral smoke fluid). Big Clive has a lot of videos on how they work and how they can be taken apart for upcycling.
That's interesting. I've never played around with those, because I used to make them before vaping became a thing. Just using the liquid you put in fog machines. Which is glycerin based, but it also has ionized water in it. Which why it's hard to make yourself. It's probably easier to just use a vape pen of some sort for all I know.
That would be a cool toy. I was thinking more of a magic prop. I was thinking of a fake fireplace poker that glows red and puts out smoke like it's really hot.
This as awesome (as usual!). Also, I'm the winning bidder on the Atomic robot you just restored. I'm looking forward to adding it to my collection. I'm too old to have owned one as a kid, but back in the early 1990s, my little cousin had a black one and I always loved its booming voice and message. Keep up the awesome work, and you Rock!
Thank you very much. Truth be told, I never had most of these things and don't even remember most of them, but what they are and how they work just screams my childhood.
When I've hooked up nichrome to wires in the past I have pulled the plastic end off a small ferrule and crimped the wires together inside the ferrule. Probably just as fiddly as soldering though. Would be interesting to see how it works with VG/PG too. I can't believe we vaped all that petrochemical smoke as kids. I guess it didn;t du us anhy harm thhoihgn. 😅
That would work too. At some point I'm going to return to this and play around with what I can accomplish. As for the petrochemicals, just another thing to show how easy the kids have it today. We vaped the hard stuff.
Have you seen modern model trains? They already have all that. They're insane now, and they cost thousands of dollars a car. Check out my friend at Eric's Trains here on youtube.
Great video. We went to the Meow Wolf at Grapevine Mall. Going to try to go to all 4 here in the U.S. Going to the one in Santa Fe next month. Then to the others in Las Vegas and Colorado. Hope you have fun Randi.
It would be useful if you could get out your VOM and tell us the resistance in ohms that a filament should have, to glow properly, with a 1.5V, a 3V, or a 9V supply. That would make it a little more scienterrific when winding the nichrome wire. If you know you are making a 15-ohm (say) filament, it makes it easy to measure out the wire, regardless of what brand or gauge of wire one happens to have. Also that would let you calculate the current draw and get an idea of how long a typical pair of AAAs would last.
I get you. That would help the people who have a meter and want to do it that way. However, I showed how you can do it, and how easy it is, and you don't even need one. That was literally my first guess.
Yeah, any oil will work. Some work better than others and some are more stable and won't rot. I think that's why they always said use petroleum based oil.
That was really impressive! Not simple at all!
Thank you
Wow, you call that simple. I call it amazing.
Hey, I was shocked at how well it worked too.
I'm having flashbacks of building rocket igniters from back in the day.
Yep, that is exactly what it is. It's also how you used to do old flash pots for theater.
Now that's the coolest thing l've seen in a long time 😃
It surprised me too. Super easy to do.

Just a thought for a use for it, how about an old rattle trap clown car, wobbly wheels and smokey exhaust?
That would be a cool toy. I was thinking more of a magic prop. I was thinking of a fake fireplace poker that glows red and puts out smoke like it's really hot.
@@RandiRain That would be pretty cool too, smoke and magic go good together

Good work. I made mine by carefully squeezing the glass off a glass bulb. This is better tbh!
Oh, you used the filament from a bulb? That's a good idea. If you can't find nichrome wire.
Much appreciated video Randi. Now I'm gonna try to repair my Smoking Gunman robot :D
Oh yeah... They're all the same thing. Maybe a different shaped box, but the workings are the same.
Amazing video as always!
Thanks again!
how did the 3 in 1 oil and the glycerin smoke even smell? also make a train that has lights and a mini bell or something cool like that!

I've been to the Grapevine one, but that's it.
@@RandiRain Road Trip!!!!!!
I see a smoking Teddy Ruxpin in my future..
Nice!

Now scale it up to the size of an outdoor garbage bin!
did you know? example strawberry or other liquid for e-cigarettes but yes strong smoke than toxic oil! ;-) maybe try

Is this how a smoking (cig) vape works and also, magic (in the hands) smoke production works?
Essentially yes.
or vegetable oil

Any chance you could work on my Omnibots once again? Sent you an email but haven’t received a response.
Busy right now.
