      Haha. I would suggest not doing more fiberglass work if you can avoid it 😂 I love my 3m versa flow but I really only use it for doing resin work. The filters are very expensive. Appreciate the kind words.

    Hey great vid mate I'm currently rebuilding my Bertram 28 and i can completely understand how much work has gone into the glass work it feels like it's never-ending. And instead of putting a piano hinge on your cooler lid industrial velcro works great and it also eliminates any little vibration too

    Hi.
    I know you posted this video a while ago but I give it a shot. Anyhow I like your work and I bought my Silverton 37c this summer and have a lot of plans. Some have already been done by previous owners but not 100%. I hope we could have some contact and share pictures of the journey. Keep up.

    Excellent job so far Russ. I live in NJ in the same town these boats were built . They’re very popular up here and we’ll known for being reliable and well built. I currently own a 97 31 Silverton express (videos on my channel) but I’ve been looking at late 80s 40’ Convertibles. I’m following along on your journey and it’s giving me the motivation to make the jump to the older boat. They’re built like tanks lol.

      Thanks. I believe they were in the same yard as Egg Harbor boats. I did a lot of research before buying this boat and I feel like they are the most over looked boat for this size. There’s really not much structurally that would go wrong unless termites or something got into the stringers. The hull is 100% glass and all the decking is foam core. For a mid 80s boat it was ahead of its time for construction materials. You can find these maybe with some engine issues for a steal. Mine is still running great on the original Crusaders.

      @@boatcrafterscollective I believe at 1 time Silverton, Luhrs , Mainship and Egg Harbor’s were all owned by the same people. Silvertons really are well built boats. And even if you have engine issues, they’re easy to repair and cheap to replace. The only reoccurring issue I hear about are the gas tanks leaking over time. Which for some models could be a big problem .

    • @boatcrafterscollective
      @boatcrafterscollective  2 года назад +1

      Yes the fuel tanks are tucked port and starboard of the engines. You’d have to pull both engines or cut the salon deck out to lift them out. Probably easier to pull the engines.
      Mine look in good shape from what I can tell but I’m probably going to get a camera put inside. Any boat of this age with aluminum tanks are going to have the same issues. Moisture gets under them and they pit and corrode. I’m going to try to lift mine a few inches and replace the wood they are sitting on also try to keep air flow under them to keep them dry. It’s going to be a tricky job.

    During your interior alterations remember that the builders designed the layout to balance the weight. Keep that in mind when moving things around

      Lol. The boat always listed to starboard. I already fixed that problem when I pulled out the settee.

    You lost me at I don't enjoy fishing... I worked at the Silverton factory here in Jersey a few times. Not on Silverton's but Topaz. Some extremely talented builders there!

    Where do you plan to put your GPS/radar, etc. screens on the flybridge console? If you do go with a fiberglass hardtop where will you route your cabling to get up to it? Old boats are always a ton of work to bring them up to a high standard even more. Looks like it will be something to be proud of.

    • @boatcrafterscollective
      @boatcrafterscollective  2 года назад

      I’m moving all my switches to a panel I made below the steering wheels. I will only have room for a small 7” screen on my dash. Wiring for the hardtop would be router inside the aluminum support legs.

    The trim added at the roofline looks nice. You may want to test a small section of it however before painting it a dark color. PVC expands and contracts signficantly with temp change. That it is encapsulated in fiberglass may mitigate that somewhat but I’d be cautious before making a full commitment to a dark color. A very light gray or blue might look good if a dark color doesn’t work.

    Does your main engine hatch have guttering around the edge under the hatch lip? Any spider webbing in the corners? I ask because that is a problem area on my 26 Tolly and since the deck is a cored one it will be hard to form up a replacement one that is functional.

    Just wondering what do you do with your boat when hurricanes come, do you haul it out or tie it down at the dock and hope for the best let me know

    • @boatcrafterscollective
      @boatcrafterscollective  Год назад

      Depends how bad the storm is going to be. Typically the best solution is to haul it out but I’ve had friends ride out hurricanes on an triple anchor setup. You’re boat is better off on a mooring or anchor instead of tied to a dock. Most damage occurs when the boat is slamming against the dock pilings. As long as the boat stays anchored and it’s shedding water it’s better to be away from the dock
