    10-bit color depth is essential when we want to make chromas as it allows there to be no small edges of color around our subjects, also when we want to make an aggressive and very deep color gradation it is essential to record at 10 bits but I personally believe that exposing correctly is much more important especially in 8 bits and if it shows colonization it will not be so aggressive it is not worth the complications involved in recording at 10 bits. By the way lumix s5 is an amazing beast for video.

      It’s like full-frame vs crop sensor in daylight. You can’t tell the difference, but come low-light/nighttime the color grading differences are much different!

    Imagine 10 bit & 8 bit like a box of crayons: in the 8 bit box you have 256 colors. In the 10 bit box you have 1024. Look at 12 bit vs 8 bit and the difference would be far more noticeable, even on an 8 bit screen. 10 bit vs 8 bit might be a technical difference in most applications, but there is definitely a difference.

    • @SidneyDiongzon
      @SidneyDiongzon  7 лет назад +3

      +Charlie Doom That's probably the BEST analogy to describe 10-bit vs 8-bit!

    • @thequantaleaper
      @thequantaleaper 6 лет назад +5

      The one place it makes a real difference is in editing. I have so much more latitude for keying and grading with 10+ bit footage which makes for a better output even at lower quality on an 8-bit display. Same with the chroma subssampling. It's minor when comparing native footage side by side, but the differences pop when working in post.

    Cool footage, Yeah the only way you'll be able to tell the difference between the 8 bit and 10 bit is in post. You have more freedom to pull in more detail from your highlights and shadows on 10 bit essentially making it look a lot better. I recently picked up this camera along with a speedbooster and sigma 18-35.

    The take-a-way is the amazing job Panasonic is doing .. AMAZING!! Looking forward to the new firmware with both 400Mbs AND an HDR gamma or profile of some kind on the GH5. Ive seen all the HDR standards in LA studio environments and its jaw dropping. Thats where 10-bit will pay off for the masses. We may care about 10 bit in the SDR environment for grading and such, but your audience won't ever tell the difference. HDR is a whole other deal. When you see that on a $30,000 DOLBY display this kind of thing won't seem important in the least. Im interested in seeing what the next firmware update will grade liken on a 10 bit P3 color monitor. I can't afford a 20k-30k production monitor yet "grin".

      In order for video cameras to get the best images with accurate colors by the changing lightings from *very low to low to high to very high lights* with high color HDR with 10 bit for over 1 billion colors which is better than 8bit for 16.7 million colors.

      It's the same comparison for us to see NO difference of the low quality and high quality videos on the small screen like the smart phone, but you see the BIG differences in quality on very big screen of 55" or bigger. It's the same comparison for 8-bit vs 10-bit videos on small screen vs. very large screen or see much more differences on the huge *4k TV HDR.* You want to see the quality of your original footage or compressed video on youtube?

    Sidney, the image quality is breathtaking. I never knew the GH5 had such good image quality. Question - I love the effect your LUT has here on Cine-V profile in this video. It actually makes the model and lighting look so natural. On your LUTs tutorial video, the LUT created a bit of a grunge look, VERY different than the effect the same LUT had on the GH5 Cine V on this video. Is this because this LUT has a different effect depending on the camera? Also, did you dial down the contrast, saturation etc on Cine V, and if so how much did you tweak each setting by?

    • @SidneyDiongzon
      @SidneyDiongzon  7 лет назад

      That's exactly right! You can always dial down the LUT depending on what kind of effect you're going for. For my FILM JOURNALS, I like to keep it somewhat "faded" because I like the "documentary" effect on it. For commercial work, I wouldn't fade it at all. For Cine V, I didn't do any tweaking at all. Hope this helps and thanks for watching my channel!

    If you do the math, 10 bit 422 requires about 560mbps. At 400mbps there should be a noticeable difference; at 150mbps there's no difference to 8bit. Even for grading.
    People see what they want to see...

    • @SidneyDiongzon
      @SidneyDiongzon  7 лет назад +2

      True, but there is actually a difference. Not much. But there is especially when you bring down the highlights in the sky. Much less banding than 8-bit footage. With the 400mb/s update, I'm sure there'll be even more of a difference.

    • @jayclas4023
      @jayclas4023 5 лет назад

      Sidney Diongzon no not with banding of the sky. 4k fixes a lot of banding issues alone. Don’t use vlog with 8 bit and the sky will not fall apart because you’re trying to put back and extend the colors you rejected to begin with.

  • @OfficeofthePacific

    Why was there no 8 Bit at 24 fps. That's what I wanted to see. The reason I ask is because I had my camera set to 10 bit 4:2:2 but all of my Storyblocks B-Roll stuff is 8 Bit 4:2:0. I was thinking I might as well just change my camera to the same 8 Bit 4:2:0 to match my B-Roll footage. It's for a RUclips music video. Thanks for the video though. P.S. I will do minimal color grading if any.

    is this just a technical hype on 10bit isee no difference with the 8bit..

      +Justin Sison They both looked pretty similar when I was editing. The 400MB/s update should make a huge difference because there'll be much less compression.

      I still have not got the whole point of the 10bit part i mean beings all the video on youtube is only 8 bit anyway. is it really possible to look different at all once you put it on youtube?

      It just helps with color grading. More data to work with

      We can only see the difference while colour grading or applying luts..

    • @SidneyDiongzon
      @SidneyDiongzon  7 лет назад +1

      The Sony a6500. Much easier to use, and much better for photography.

      Sidney Diongzon oh really better for photography? Why that? Because I am going to buy one of the two but don't know which one is better
      I wanna do music videos run and gun shooting and also a big aspect is photography and I wanna use native lenses. I do really like the handling of the gh5 thought

    • @SidneyDiongzon

      +Nicolai Blume Yeah, I'd go with a Sony if you want to do photography too. They've got some pretty awesome native lenses too.

    If you dont have an 10 bit color monitor you would never see a difference lol

      +Nicolás Bañales Yep! 100% right!

      Actually, that's not entirely true. With 10bit color you get more possible gradations of each color which then can translate to less banding when displayed on a normal (8 bit) monitor. Having 1024 possible shades of each color channel will translate to smoother gradations and more accurate colors in the 8 bit color space conversion.

    I mean first of all why shooting in 420 8 bits since nowadays you can go up to 12 bits in 420. 422 will always be 8 or 10 bits and never higher at least for gaming industry.🙄

    Why slow mo 60p? It's far from comparison...

    • @SidneyDiongzon
      @SidneyDiongzon  7 лет назад

      It's a 4K test footage video. The GH5 shoots 4K both in 24fps and 60fps.

      Would be nice to see same picture(head to head) 4k30p 10-bit 4:2:2 vs 4k60p 8-bit 4:2:0
