Great topic! Thank you so much for both the good and bad side of 3Ds. I have considered them in the past and watching this video you made good points I had not realized were an issue. I was about to think they aren't worth the effort until your last comment! I love the cave idea. Keep up the great work Zenzo.
You may think you go on but what I admire is you rarely miss out important steps we all need to hear. Wouldn't have it any other way. So glad we can learn by your mistakes ( experience) keep up the good work! God bless..
This is why I stopped trying to hide the tubes to my canister filters or hang on back filters and just paint them whatever color the background was and leave them in front of the background and place the background directly on the back glass. eliminate so much hassle!
My biggest concern with these is definitely detritus and other rot accumulating behind the background and becoming difficult to remove. Just look at how much gunk gathers around decorations when you move them for cleaning and a cloud of crap just appears in its place.
Super thanks for sharing this very important information on 3D backgrounds for aquarium and your tanks with bkgrounds looks super nice as well. In Singapore normally i dont use 3D backgrounds and i guess we are getting into it and i am also trying to search for some 3D backgrounds in Singapore LFS, really good to have good information from your video , sure to help lots of other aquarium hobbyists for sure.
what about making the space behind it not necessarily open to fish getting through, but open to allow for the heater/air/filter which gives a small gap to allow for maintenance and checking for anyone stuck back there?
Ty Zenzo your vid came exactly at the right moment. My Rockzolid hard polyester 3D background is the only thing that gave me worried, due to fishwaste building up and fish getting behind there. Even my large Trout managed to get behind there this week. I removed the grids i made when i installed it. Now they can swim behind it and like you said, just have to let it go..
Hi mate Great video I need advice on the pressure of the tank I made one 3d background using expended foam looking imaging But I reasonly reseal my 150galone tank Will this new background that I just made cost too much pressure . Is quite chunky background Any advice will be good thanks
Hey man, I currently have a 3d background from aqua decor that covers 3 sides on my tank. I don’t have any holes in it and keep the outtake and intakes hoses of the filter in front. So I see you have your air stone behind your background. I’m wondering if that’s a good method? Or is it better to have it in the front/main water column?
I think it is better overall to be in front. I have mine in the back next to my heater, otherwise, I would probably find a place in front of the background.
Question when I bought an aquarium was also given 3 cichlids but can't find out what they are, have taken pictures to my local fish store and Petco and they can't tell me. Can I get some assistance on identifying them in order to find out what I can add to the aquarium. Any help will be appreciated.
At the beginning of this year, I purchased my first 3D background from universal rocks, with a lot research on the back void. One thing I learned is, you showed it, is having circulation of the water, I have a bubble wall and Pothos plants ,are a must. Fired Up Info!!!
I like the look of the 3D backgrounds, but I don't think I'll ever get one. I have nano tanks and I don't want to take up even that little bit of extra space, and I like the option of changing my backgrounds quickly and easily when I want to change things up. I do think they look great in bigger tanks with big fish though. 👍❤👍
i am also making my own AQUARIUM BACK GROUNDS... mine will trap gallons of water that will not circulate and will stagnate... QUESTION.. will the stagnated trapped water be a problem that must be syphoned out periodically or is it actually beneficial for biological means...
To prevent a HOB filter from sitting In front of a 3D background, could the filter be mounted on the side of the tank? 75 gallon mbuna tank with wave makers pushing water toward the filter.
@tazawatanks I thought based on your title you were going to address all types of backgrounds, not just 3D. I have watched your series on how to make them and think they are amazing. However I am looking for more information on (probably crazy easy) way of applying a plain black background to outside of my tank that is not paint.
My platies sometimes go to the side filter chamber, they swim all the way through gap between main tank and side filter area. And trap in the smaller area. Give me a hard work for me get them back. I imagine my little fish wardering through 3 d background. Yes it's beautiful. But..... Nope, for me Thankyou.... Sir
@@TazawaTanks thanks for the response. Yeah it probably would be a pain to clean and to keep it against the glass. I used a product to apply it to the outside that you rub all over the background and then stick to the glass and squeegee the air pockets n extra product out and it really keeps it in place. Way better than tape..
In response to size and taking up space it also greatly reduces weight that 100 gallon tank u want upstairs is viable when its really only holding 60 gallons
Great video! Some friends who have artificial rocks in the aquarium, made of mortar, then painted and resined, told me that the mbunas scraped off the resin and scraped off part of the mortar stones. Wouldn't that be a risk to the fish's health? I already have all the techniques to produce huge (but light) stones made of mortar, mounted in a styrofoam mold, then painted, resined and finally the styrofoam is removed from inside them with the use of a thermal blower. My fear is that my mbunas will scrape sand, even though it is resistant.
I love the way those backgrounds look, but my biggest tank is a ten gallon, so it would take up too much space. I can just imagine how frustrating it must have been to have to take the tank apart. I can also imagine how mad those fishies were about losing their new space. I love that you put tunnels into your DIY background. With the way my life is going I probably won’t ever have a tank bigger than 20 gallons, but watching your videos is so enjoyable. Thanks!
Have you considered attaching velcro to the background and tank to hold them in place? Might make moving them when you need to easier and if you use enough, it'll hold, even a foam piece.
Why not just use the 3D background as a filter? Cut a couple of holes in the corner, close up the background with some filter sponge in the other side and fill the cavity with bio-elements. Add a powerhead and presto, you have a filter that will run for years without the need for cleaning.
Im not a fan of 3d backgrounds i think they look awesome but to theyre more of a pain than a luxury i like just a black background cuz its easier to clean algae of the glass than off a textured surface like a 3d background

@@manuelayala6080 it may be that the fish is stunted, or possibly a different species than what you thought when you bought it, and it will stay small.

I always wondered about this when I saw 3D backgrounds. Great info. And helpful for new setups in future
Appreciate you doing this video because just yesterday I searched the whole web trying to find the pros and cons of just having a background

Your pictures are well worth the extra effort!
Does the 3D back ground stop the headgear from working effectively?
👍😎 Good video Zenzo. I remember those days when you were right there. ✌️
So I can use it at the bottom of fish tank instead of gravel right? I have a 35 gal 2 ft square cube tank.
I like the one you made better than the commercial background.
Another great one bro!

Thanks for the information, just a thought might work use a course sponge in any holes / gaps to stop fish but not water flow
They make for nice displays. Definately trap detritus, fish etc. and much harder to care for.
These are neat, i like the look!
Curious if they take up a lot of water volume?
What color is the Universal Rocks Kiama background? And is a slim background (aside from the base sticking out)? Thx
It’s kind of a dark sand/light brown color. It is more 3D than the slim backgrounds. There is enough space behind it for heaters, filtration, etc.

I would suggest at least putting an air stone behind the background to prevent stagnant water.
Thank You.@@TazawaTanks
That’s for sharing as I too have a DIY background. It’s sure is a lot of work but well worth it.
Well that was helpful. Thanks!
To prevent a HOB filter from sitting In front of a 3D background, could the filter be mounted on the side of the tank? 75 gallon mbuna tank with wave makers pushing water toward the filter.
Absolutely.
So what should I do to hide all the pumps and tubes
Just an fyi, I put filter sponge where the holes were in my 3d background. Allows water to still pass through but the fish can’t.
How do you clean a 3d background?

I actually prefer the background that you customised especially with the attached plants.
I thought the background was up against the back glass ?
Surprised a fish could be back there :)
I have a 5 gallon fish tank can I do this with my small tank??
Yes, but keep in mind that it will take up a little bit of interior volume.
AWSOME channel...scribe ...DIG IN..some channels can get just TO CONFUSING...like the way it's explained...AWSOME JOB👍💯
Those are nice.
Could you put the store bought plastic backgrounds INSIDE the tank???
Yes, but I imagine it to be a pain in the butt (getting it to stay out and not float, getting algae on it, etc.).
