  • A few weeks ago we had some issues conducting an audit at Wheeler Army Airfield, where I spent a lot of time with the MP's trying to educate them on the law and a citizen's right to public photography outside of a base. I wanted to see if all of that training did any good or not, so I decided to visit another Army base today to see if I would have the same problems with the MP's and Department of Defense Police as I had at Wheeler.
I conducted this audit today at Fort Shafter Army Base in Kalihi, Hawaii. During this audit, I set up a video camera on public property outside the base and filmed for an hour at both the main gate and a side gate. We also peeked over the wall to watch the MP's working the visitor vehicle inspection area.
I was pleasantly surprised to not have a single interaction throughout the audit. Department of Defence Police officers drove past me twice without even slowing down, and a couple of the MP's even waved at me. This was a perfect audit.
I wonder if my educating the MP's a few weeks ago at Wheeler Army Airfield had anything to do with the extremely warm reception that I received on today's audit. All of the work that goes into doing these audits seems to finally be having a positive effect at the military bases in Hawaii.
