No. A Mr Orrell owned the land EFC rented from. Initially EFC had to make contributions to local hospitals to play there not paying rent as we know it. Everton built the ground up on all four sides. In the meantime Houlding bought the land from Orrell (his mate), then becoming EFCs landlord charging rent.
Houlding, the chairman, then made all sorts of moves to get hold of the club. One was to up the rent by 2.5 times. That was not a real financial issue as the club was doing well winning the League title, staging internationals, holding 20,000 games, etc, it was just seen as another way of Houlding gaining control.
The flashoint was not rent it was when Orrell who owned the land next door wanted to exercise his right to run an access road to the back of his land *through EFCs new main stand.* There was a covenant in the land sale to Houlding giving Orrell the right to do so, which the EFC Committee never knew about as they were not privy to the land deal.
This was the last straw so the Committee decided to move building their own stadium under their control 100%. Then Houlding offered to sell EFC the land at a decent deal, as he would have an empty football ground and no tenant. But the resentment and distrust could not be moved. EFC left, as work to move was at an advanced stage. Also Goodison's footprint was 25% larger.

Everton originally played at Anfield including the first seasons of the Football League. Prestons ground, Deepdale outdates Goodson Park by 14 years. Deepdale is still on the site of the original stadium. this makes Deepdale the oldest continuously used stadium in professional football. Deepdale is the home of the first ever Football League champions, the first Invincible team and the first to do the League and Cup double.

Cathkin Park in Glasgow is the site of the 2nd Hampden Park. Purpose built as a football stadium complete with terraced stands and opened in 1884. It was home to Queen's Park first of all and later Third Lanark. Also temporarily Ranges at one point. It hasn't been in use for football since the demise of Third Lanark as a football club in the 1960s, however, but can still be visited as a historical site. Everton left Anfield as the chairman was attempting to gain control of the club. Rent was a side issue. The catalyst was when the adjacent landowner, friend of the chairman, wanted to run a parallel access road through Everton's new main stand.
The chairman, who bought the land from the adjacent landowner while Everton were occuppying it, became Everton's landlord. He had that in the agreement of *his* land purchase a road could run across the land he rented to Everton. Everton being the renter were not privy to this agreement with it being unbeknown to the Everton committee. It was seen as a deliberate lever to gain control of the club.
