    You might want to cover up the intake of the shower drain with a grate to avoid debris of too big size getting in and blocking the drain somewhere you can't reach easily.

      Also, if you want more privacy, you can install a second layer of the pine boards on the interior of the shower below the shelf. Offset the boards by at least 3 - 5 cm and it will possibly help both sides to last longer while providing sustained privacy as the boards shrink over time.

    • @fjkelley4774
      @fjkelley4774 3 месяца назад

      @@Isaac_Norman Could use exterior battens over the gaps, but given the original width of the boards, might be alot of work. However, the pine will definitely shrink over its life.

Would be neat to track every person's contributions, not matter how small, just to see what it's like for everyone and what their roles are

    I was suprised you didn't torch the ends of the posts that were being put in the ground directly in the dirt. Good method for preventing rot, or at least putting it off for a longer time than it would be without it. Very happy to see the Magnesium Oxide experiments and how it works. The only thing I could think to suggest would be to put in a drain screen over the runoff hole in the ground, to keep large pieces from potentally plugging the drain. Where you have it, it doesn't seem like it would be a problem to clear out, or check once a week, or more, depending on the usage of the shower. Loved the project. And yes she is already a celebrity. 😁😉

    Some ideas to prevent wood post rot and water runoff in post area: Propane torch the wood surfaces, stone/brick/concrete/rocksbelow and around wood footing, concrete or similar base pad for wood to rest on, or rock base to improve drainage away from post bases, sand/clay/mud and hay/straw; once hardened, apply a smooth sealant (concrete or other). Takes longer but some make their own air dried bricks ( straw & mud in a mold) and use mortar or equivalent to join.
    Any plans for a passive roof solar water heater tank storage unit. Eg, Water tank on the ground, exposed to the sun yet glass covered or encased? Solar panels on the roof to provide an alternate energy heat source, shower roof water run-off collected in blackened water barrel(s) on the ground. Water can also be used for garden plant drip irrigation.

    The magnesium oxide experiments were super interesting! Thanks for including that. I've worked with building supplies in the past - I did a year of work almost exactly like this. I never heard of using this for cement. Clearly it works, though, and is much better for the environment. You might want to add one more layer that is all downhill to the drain. Normally you have it all sloped, so water drains and doesn't pool. You can use a small spirit level to get it near perfect! But you really need to make sure the basin is all downhill to the drain, as otherwise the water will eat through the magnesium over time or go stale. It will certainly make it sink down, and drop further. Also add a grate over the drain to allow you to easily clean it in the future and prevent blockage, you will get a stink otherwise. Good luck!

      potassium Phosphate, or fertilizer, also has a huge Co2 footprint, or is that very much lower than cement?

    • @takeahike858
      @takeahike858 Год назад

      I agree with Camiel the CO2 difference is likely negligible when you account for shipping and packaging. Etc. This Carbon boner nonsense smh

    • @ryanm2648
      @ryanm2648 Год назад +2

      @@camielvanlenteren5256 Cement is one of the biggest producers of CO2, because not only does it require combustion, the reaction itself releases massive amounts of carbon due to the carbon atoms breaking off elements that have many carbon atoms. This is why it's good to look for alternatives. Potassium phosphate may be better, as it can be produced chemically with little carbon output. That being said, it's very likely that it's no where near as good as cement and will breakdown well before it.
      The better solution is to pump cement with CO2 so it is trapped inside the cement. Many companies are doing this as it's easy and quick and can store a lot of carbon.
      But for a small project like this? I think that using potassium phosphate may be better. It isn't large scale.

    So good! Absolutely fantastic stuff everyone.
    Q. Any Clay Pits on the land? If you could make your own clay pavers, fired in a kiln, that would cover any long term issues with mud across base camp.
    In fact just constantly sourcing discarded bricks/tiles/pavers & laying down a patchwork network of covered areas would be an extremely effective way to keep the dust & mud away.

    When you start doing plumbing indoors remember to pre-squeeze the copper rings (olives)on the pipes, also add a bit of thread tape around the olives before final assembly, this will make sure your fitting dont bleed later on. What do you guys do with the grey water? Understand you use bio soap but does it run through a fat-trap before it goes back into the wild?letting the water flow into a pit/ with potato sized rocks can do the trick, the body fat sticks to the cold rocks and you can treat it with bio enzyme to clean it up and take the smell away, I enjoy your videos, thanks for the great content *cool music video man*

    Loving tho project so far, as a suggestion you might want to look into charring the surface of any wood that goes into the ground such as the posts in this video or the mimosa that forms the steps. Charring the wood prevents bugs eating it and prevents rotting, plus it looks really good IMO. It's originally a japanese method called Shou Sugi Ban, plenty of videos on youtube about it :) .
    + It is also more fire resistant.

Also, it looked like a pocket hole screwing kit might be useful addition to your tools - not suitable for every situation but easy to use and they help make most of the solutions they're used for stronger.

    The environmental impact of Magnesium Phosphate cement (MPC) per kg is higher than for Portland cement, mainly due to the use of fertilizer. It, of course, depends on the ratio MgO:phosphate and other variables, but please, don't advertise it as "environmentally friendly" which it is not. But a great material for superfast setting and very useful for such a project.
