  • One of those 'experiment and learn' videos I create. I like this design and it rarely gets used but Id like to make a ring using the technique of scrolling back metal.
So this is a video of myself trying to find the best way to do it.
Online training for practicing jewellers covering safe use, handling and storage of gas cylinders.

I think the way to go about it is to make the shank a bit longer than needed and then sweat the ends back into balls that you can then hammer (large hammer on the edge of a heavy vice works well)
This will get you the width and if sufficiently skilled produces a knife edge shank that you can roll up.
The guy who trained me often did this bit for me, he made it look so easy, I would beat the crap out of it and leave huge marks in the metal but he always seemed to hit it just right to manipulate the metal. Unlike with the mills, he could spread it exactly where he wanted and get a smooth taper.

Thanks for the cool video. I had not thought about this type of design. I wondered if instead of that first tiny bend to get started if another approach would also work. What about soldering a round wire (18 guage?) To the end of the flattened bit. Then use that as a starting point to give you a nice start to the roll. Thoughts?

as someone that started with blacksmithing before jewellery, my go to would have been to first try to hammer the scroll entirely, but maybe your approach of using pliers is more appropriate.
Ok, just gave it a go, definitely theres less marring to the metal than what I can see occurring from using pliers, but the quality of the scroll was about the same, and would still perhaps need filling in with solder like you said.
Wish I could attach a photo to my comment.
Good little experiment, I've not tried that before with silver.

I was thinking this same thing… “I thought I saw a blacksmith making these before”; unfortunately the video I thought of he twisted it in while he pulled a leaf off the bar…

I’m guessing you need to hammer it to a taper. Thin at the beginning smoothly tapering to thicker. This would make it look more natural and balanced like a scroll.

Any chance you'do do a video (or a series of videos) about making your framework art pieces?
