    Who would be victorious?
    -A 3 Kilometer Lucrehulk carrier with lots of heavy weapons, carrying 500 of the most advanced Air Superiority Fighters of the Galaxy at the time, attacking the enemy by suprise?
    -A 16 year old farmboy, who made vroom vroom noises while playing with his toy starfighter, engaging the enemy at red alert?

      Not true, the Rebel Fleet in Legends was a lot more robust compared to the current canon history. On top of that X-Wing losses were very low, so they could manufacture the ships readily and they were just growing, not replacing the losses suffered.

      Not only that, but have a few X-wings break off and make a torpedo run at the Star Destroyer ventral hangars. A chance to eliminate or delay the second wave further to possibly get another shot cause those Tie fighters would be very vulnerable at that point.

      If the death star shot that means the reactor was running, since the death star wasn't finished, they may have been a hole that would have let the fighter reach the reactor, and destroy it. Even if the reactor wasn't at full capacity, its explosion would have badly damage the death star.

    I prefer Canon here. I like the idea of the Death Star being a secret, and I think the Rebellion fighting it earlier, negates some of the surprise and shock they all had in ANH and Rogue One.
    Plus, I think it’s rather silly for the Alliance to have a Lucrehulk and use it in such a risky situation. Just keep that thing safe, it’s more useful in the long run than just throwing it at the Death Star.

    The author of this story REALLY wants us to suspend disbelief. Even with 500 X-wings... the Rebellion would have zero reason to believe they could take out something the size of a moon without knowledge of a weak point. And they would have no reason to attack the Death Star since (I assume) this takes place before the events of Rogue One so as far as the Rebellion is concerned... this station could simply be some kind of weird defense platform or orbital shipyard. To spend such a significant force on something they are as yet unaware is a planet killer AND for Rebel pilots to not take the fight to enemy Ties when given the chance... it all just sounds like story contrivance.

    Wouldn't it have made more sense to have the Lucrehulk jump in from the opposite end of the firing direction of the Death Star, then making sure to stay outside of the turbo laser range while orbiting the station to maintain its safety from the main weapon? That way, the X-Wings fighters would have been able to have a meaningful defense and have a means of repairing and have a bit of cover fire from the TIEs. In prolonged combat, the fighters could have easily mopped up the TIEs and before any capital ships could jump in, the rebels would have done considerable damage over time to their super weapon so they could escape as needed with hit and run tactics.

    A straight up attack would at best delay the completion and actually increase security around it. However, as a distraction, a fighter sweep would be more effective.
    A project like the Deathstar requires a huge amount of resources coming from everywhere. That is a lot to keep up with. Now there had to be literally hundreds of transports, both large and small. Take a bulk transport. Build a bomb in it's gutted hold (one really BIG bomb). Have this ship enter the system with a suicide unit on board with whatever security passes you can get that seem ligit. Just before your "fire ship" goes thru it's security checks, the fighter attack begins with the fighters coming out of hyper on multiple vectors to the deathstar. This adds confusion and breaks up any chance of a coordinated defense at the start. During the confusion, your fire ship moves toward the deathstar in general, but more towards a star destroyer. Acting like your taking cover behind the star destroyer. A large group of your fighters should be making it's way toward the same destroyer so as to keep it's attention focused on the fighters. Once behind the destroyer, and out of most of it's firing arc. Full Burn Flank Speed toward the Death Star with what ever fighters are near providing cover. Plow into the deathstar, preferably into an opening and BOOM! Good bye to a good chunk of the Death Star.
    I know this is a little gruesome to commit people to their deaths, but it increases the chance of success. The one problem an assassin has is not getting to the target, it's getting back out after the security is alerted. Those who do not plan to survive the attack at all, they don't have that problem.
    Now if you wanted to do it a bit less dramatically. Find out where the key components are coming from, when they leave, how long it takes to arrive. And time your fighter sweep to hit as those shipments come in. Imperial forces will be more relaxed as they get to the destination system and begin to check in. But they are still vulnerable to a quick, lethal strike before they can get those parts inside the defensive line.
    Failing all that, attack the system with a fighter sweep and ignore the deathstar all together. Concentrate on the transports with torpedo bombers, blow up every one you can before the imperials get all their fighters out. And hope you take out something vital that takes months or years to replace.

  • @CallsignYukiMizuki
    @CallsignYukiMizuki 6 лет назад

    I would have tackled it much differently (and imho, much more effectively)
    Composition: The same as originally intended
    Formation;
    Task force Lightning: Lucrehulk +100 X-Wings
    Task force Thunderbolt: 400 X-Wings
    The battle:
    -Initially, I would send a single X-Wing using its FTL at the outskirts of the DS perimeter for recon, primarily to observe where the DS main weapon is facing and where the enemy ships are located.
    -Once the scout has returned, I will use the intel gathered from the recon mission and jump in Task force Lightning at the DIRECT OPPOSITE of where the DS main weapon is facing. The objective of TF Lightning is to harass, draw fire and force the SD's to relocate to TF Lightning's position
    -After some time, TF Thunderbolt would then come out of hyperspace directly opposite of where TF Lightning's direction for a feint attack. 400 X-Wings would basically be attacking the DS with minimal resistance (compared to the original plan).
    -TF Lightning then pulls out of the engagement and retreats. If they're lucky, they would still have a damaged (but functional) Lucrehulk

    Great video.
    1. Where did the Rebels get 500 X-Wings? Z-95's or R-22's I could believe.....even some V-Wings or Torrents. But RA manufacturing wasn't up to that level pre-Yavin.
    2. What was the plan? They didn't have the DS schematics, so what was their target?
    3. They had a Lucrehulk. If nothing else, that makes a pretty devastating ram at sublight speeds. Kick in the hyperdrive......BOOM! And I'll bet Ensign Holdo could get the job done.....

    Would propose that the main reason that the attack failed was because of no command and control. The fighters were launched, however with the carrier destroyed before attack orders could be relayed to the squadrons launched, it meant that there was no overall guiding hand. Squadron or wing commanders are now left with trying to orchestrate an attack and directing not 12-72 fighters but up to 6-40 times that number. The instant increase in workload and lack of experience in this department (the Starfighter Corps is still in its infancy at this stage) meant that options become drastically reduced. Tactics need to be simplified out of panic and inexperience and hence explains why the Rebels opted for the non-evasive punching tactics in an blind rush to get through the screens to the Death Star proper.
    The Carrier could have had compliments of faster or heavier fighters or even newer fighters, but int he end it means nothing without command and control to direct the attacks for maximum effectiveness. Even outnumbered 2:1, the scales were still in the Alliance's favour, but the lack of experience overall is something else to consider.
    Another factor is that there was no way that they would have known that the Superlaser was able to destroy a ship with great accuracy, which compared to a planet is a minute target. The Rebels were not clear on the Death Star's capabilities when dealing with capital ships and also shows why Dodonna eventually opted for using Starfighters as opposed to using capital ships when formulating his attack plan at Yavin.

    Use the Lucrehulk like a modern carrier. It has all the facilities for repairing and rearming fighters, along with habitation for the pilots... but can't take a hit from the superlaser. So fly it to a nearby star system, and have the X-wings hyperdrive in from there.

    I would have sent a few CR-90s, a dozen or so Y-Wings or B-Wings if they had them, 10 or so A-Wing squadrons, and twenty X-Wings. The A-Wings and CR-90s provide anti fighter support, Y-Wings for the Death Star Attack Run and Star Destroyer assaults, and the X Wings would be good all-around fighters. What do you think of my strategy, Eck?

    the lucrehulk is not simply a carrier- its a command and control center. Yes 500 x wings could jump in but they would not be able to coordinate or communiate well at all with just the fighters electronic brains transmitting telemetry to each other. They would be confused, disoirganized, and literally running into each other. This is why a central command and control vessel is needed, that can stand back, analyze the battle, and sent telemetry coordinating large groups of star fighters

    Point blank hyper space jump with a with the battleship loaded with high explosives, x wings can jump in first and place a signal beacon for the jump. And have the battleship collide with the main dish. However a covert operation with either nuclear weapons smuggled on board would be better, we saw how quickly the death star brought in the falcon.

  • @JZ909
    @JZ909 6 лет назад

    I think an even better strategy would be to feint from one side with fast fighters, and then, after the Death Star's fighters have committed, attack from the opposite side with X-wings and Y-wings. The ties can either turn tail to hit the new group, only to be shredded by pursuing fighters that can outrun them, or stay committed on fighters that can just run away.

  • @cherudium
    @cherudium 5 лет назад

    Best strategy would be the a-wing slash supported by a lucrahulk however the hulk would have to be outside the range of the deathstar. If fuel is a concern have it near enough they can jump in from it and jump back to it but still outside the super laser range, this doesn't have to be that far way for example behind the sun in the same solar system or even behind a planet. After all I don't know how fast the super laser can fire but even if it can destroy the planet and then fire rapidly again the debris should obstruct any follow up shots for quite some time. The fighters do the a wing slash and if they need to book it they can jump on their own or return the the hulk and book it that way.

    Not to mention that without the Death Star plans, or any knowledge of the Death Star’s exhaust post, the attack itself won’t do much aside from delaying another fight. Regardless of the two strategies used in this video, the Alliance should’ve waited until they got the plans (along with getting Luke Skywalker) and then attack. Then the Alliance would have had more fighters than the attack in A New Hope along with the Lucrehulk to support the fighters and have Luke lead the attack.

    5:40 have the fighters attack the dish and after the first attack, jump away to a hyperspace point where you can have the lucrehulk refuel your fighters. Then when the time is right, attack again. use the lucrehulk as a fueling area instead of a capital ship.

  • @NiceAwesomeDude
    @NiceAwesomeDude 6 лет назад

    The best reasons I can think of for bringing the Lucrehulk the way they did was to have it serve as a possible transport ship in one of two ways. Possibly they could have wanted to board the station, but that would be a mistake to assume that there's somewhere where it could dock or land; so that's a no go. Alternatively they may have wanted a ship to harbor damaged X-wings on for either repairs or evac during a retreat (Or to specifically evac damaged ships only), which is assuming the X-wings had their hyperdrives disabled or destroyed somehow without outright destroying the fighter; although that's a rather bold assumption to make that a fighter could take a hit that could destroy the hyperdrive and not the ship itself, so still not a good reason. Either way, not much of a reason to bring the Lucrehulk.

  • @joshuaplotkin8826
    @joshuaplotkin8826 6 лет назад

    the first death star did not have a targeting sensor that could hit anything smaller than a moon. the second death star had an improved super laser and targeting system that allowed it to blow up capital ships. plus, by the new canon, the super laser was installed during the events of Rogue One so it would not be ready for this attack

  • @UncleMikeDrop
    @UncleMikeDrop 6 лет назад

    I would also outfit every Starfighter with visual flight recorders in order to broadcast this attack to basically everybody who can receive a signal. I agree that destroying the Death Star would not be feasible but it would still be important to do as much damage as possible in order to stall its construction. This could garner a far greater degree of support then the rebels originally had prior to the Battle of Yavin.

  • @willcaputo1
    @willcaputo1 6 лет назад

    Good strategy, but it would be potentially a bit better to have at least some of the X-wings attack the SDs, focusing fire on the hangars. In this kind of scenario, ISDs are more valuable as carriers that can rapidly deploy fighters rather than capital ships. Also, have the second wave similarly focus fire on the fighter launch bays on the Death Star. The idea here is to limit the amount of fighters capable of operating in a given area, on account of the TIE having a limited amount of fuel.
    The DS and ISDs may have thousands of TIEs between them, but if you can force them to travel further and further to engage you, then there might as well be no TIEs. And if the DS goes to round the clock patrols, you still win, because it gives you time to launch an attack and bug out with reduced losses.

    It does make more sense the way you would have done it, however you may never get a second attempt in this style of attack, as after the first the empire would likely double or tripple the defensive fleet and fighters and you would run straigt into a trap the second time. To avoid this, you would need to sabotage imperial support lines, thereby splitting your force and unfavorablely commiting to key positions.

    I agree with the revised strategy, hit 'em hard and hit 'em fast. As for hitting the death star itself I'd aim for the super laser dish and any hanger bays. The super laser, obviously the biggest threat, any setback in that area would help the rebels a lot and the hanger bays would hurt the Imp's repair efforts and overall functionality ( How you gonna fix the thing if you can't get the repair crews in there?). Just a few bits from me :).

    The Lucrehulk could have been a good tool for the fight if they used it like a fireship. Pack it full of explosives and ram the death star. Preferably on the half without a functioning superlaser. Before hyperspace raming was a thing and before knowing there was a weakness to the battlestation, it would probably take a ship that big packed with explosives to have a chance of seriously delaying or destroying a battlestation the size of a moon.

  • @smokinggnu6584
    @smokinggnu6584 5 лет назад

    But what exactly would all those fast fighters with torpedoes making a single pass on the deathstar and unloading all their ordinance actually do? They didn't had the intelligence that they had at Yavin, so had no idea that the exhaust port was a critical flaw in the station. At most they'd do some surface damage, maybe take out a few hangars, but what effect would that realistically have on such a big station?

  • @BoisegangGaming
    @BoisegangGaming 6 лет назад

    I really think this undercuts the idea that the Rebels aren't well equipped and can't fight the empire on equal terms. I mean, we see that even during the Battles of Scariff and Yavin that the Rebels are really just scrambling anything that can be crewed(thus GR-75s). 500 X-Wings is an absurd amount of fighters for any one cell to have(even if it was multiple cells pooling resources together). I like the current interpretation that they were really just using whatever they could get their hands on and weren't really able to actually fight the empire on equal ground, being little more than terrorists and freedom fighters fighting for a relatively similar goal, splintered into multiple ideological factions. I also don't think the Empire would leave the Death Star with such a relatively small guard. Sure, 1000 TIEs and 3 ISDs is impressive, but for the size of the Death Star, especially one that isn't fully complete, I think there should be at least double that.
    Additionally, the sheer amount of communication necessary for an operation like this would give up the Rebel plans extremely quickly. The reason why the Rebels had only a relatively small amount of people and ships in each cell was to make communication in that cell easier, making it more flexible and also limiting the amount of time needed to evacuate or leave the area. It's also a serious waste of resources.

Have the Lucrehulk jump in towards what was expected to be the tail end and have the R-22s hit the super laser, shield emitters and try to damage the engines with fast, close range, passes. Remember the turbo laser batteries and turrets were having a hard time tracking the Y-Wings and X-Wings at close range in ANH. R-22s are allot faster. :)

    The Lucrehulk was likely operating as a command and control platform.
