Kanan is possibly my favorite Jedi, and I'm saying this as an old that grew up with the original trilogy. I love the way that he was able to balance Jedi teachings with his love and attachment to the entire Ghost crew. His scene with teaching Sabine to use the dark saber ("SO WHAT'S THE TRUTH?") is just brilliant (amazing acting from both of them) and his death hit me hard. I'm so glad the characters of Rebels are finally getting the attention they deserve.
Yeah, the Jedi Order went too far in the other direction in trying to avoid attachments instead of teaching how to balance your attachments and, when necessary, how to let go in a healthy manner.
Seriously, if Anakin could've simply gone into therapy after his mother was killed and he slaughtered the Sandpeople responsible for it, Darth Vader likely never exists. Yeah, part of the reason is that he mostly kept it a secret, but he did tell Padmé.
Meanwhile, even if they had known, the Jedi Order never properly invested in the resources for properly treating mental issues and would instead suggest holding in those feelings, thereby making the same mistake that Elsa's parents did in "Frozen."
His eyes turning blue in his last moments to see Hera again, always gets me.
It’s the look on Hera’s face for me 😢
For me it is the scene after they get back to the base and Zeb huge Ezra and Chopper takes Hera's hand
@@liamlogsdon1099 to me it's the face and the "KAAAANAAAAAAN!" occupying every single audio channel in there. Vanessa Marshall nailed it.
Yeah I always took it that his vision was restored in that last moment to see Hera again.
One of the best TV deaths ever. THAT'S how you kill off a beloved character, my guy died a hero.
As someone that went on that emotional ride watching Kanan's death, that was hard to watch. The story about how Dave kept that a secret from the cast is also a tear jerker
Very glad that the show at least acknowledged him. Might seem like a small thing to get miffed over but I think it was a valid worry given the amount of stuff the show needs to do.
All they need now is Zeb. Was really hoping that he was one of the pilots that accompanied Teva to Seatos.
I was worried that he was gonna be treated like padme. They only allude to her in star wars but never talk about her post prequels.😔
Dead serious. If in the last episode his son actually gets to see a force ghost or vision version of Kanaan played by Freddie Prince Jr. the entire internet will die.
Ugh that scene in Rebels always gets me. Beautifully done
The title has the same energy as "Boruto's Dad".
Jacen's dad seems cool, ngl. Hope they make a show about him or something.
You’re not wrong
Amen lol
Kanan is one of the best jedi we have seen. Even though he wasn't particularly powerful in the force or skilled with the lightsaber, he managed to embody the ideals of the jedi. He showed how stupid the no attachments rule was as his attachment to Hera and the rest of the ghost crew only made him stronger.
I mean dude managed to fight while being blind and hold off a rhydonium factory explosion is enough to tell me he is strong in the force
@@madtitan0825 was it done on lothal? Because I'm pretty he was Amped given how the planet had strong ties to force especially the lightside.
@@baki484ok how about how he took out the Grand Inquisitor only after tapping into this positive feelings and emotions from seeing Ezra get hurt🤷🏽♂Kanan showed that one can be a Jedi and still use emotional attachments to good benefits. Obi Wan showed that too and if Anakin were given the chance...
@@ICU1337 Freddy Price jr said it was a oneness with the force. It wasn't Kanan anymore. It's was the same thing with maul. Kanan cannot achieve those feats on his own due to his limited training.
He is better than the clone war era jedi. In terms of their philosophy and trust in the force. Like the original commenter said. Skill and power yeah no.
@@baki484I'm not seeing how what you're saying detracts from what I wrote🤔I'm also seeing you using opinions as facts too🤷🏽♂
After watching Kanan sacrifice himself to save the others the first time, I was devastated.
But as Alex said: Kanan's legacy will live inside his and Hera's son Jacen, and of course, inside Ezra, now that re did returned to Star Wars Galaxy to maybe teach Jacen the ways of the Jedi.
Kanan's death is heartbreaking. Ive rewatched Rebels 3 or 4 times. I have to prepare myself for that specific episode every time.
I had to prepare myself to see it in this recap
i burst into tears every time i see him holding back that fire
I knew Kanan dies in Season 4 before I began watching Rebels. The impact of that moment when I watched it is such a great example that even when the destination is spoiled, the journey to it is the real emotional experience.
So true, I had also known prior to watching and its still a top 5 death for me in star wars history
Did anyone else love that Kanan's theme was used while Jacen sensed Ahsoka through the force? It might have been my favourite moment in the episode just because of that.
Kanan is such a great character!!! One of my favorites
Something I wondered about Jacen being able to hear Ashoka in the WBW was whether or not Jacen latently has the mind probe ability. Ashoka gave a little pause after Jacen told her he heard her fighting, and how much of Kanans’ connection to Bendu or the Loth Wolves and their relationship to the world between worlds played any part of that. Just a thought I had from my initial watch, but watching again there seems like it was left to possibly have Jacens’ role be more significant in the future.
My favorite Jedi. I loved how different Kanan was, and his status was quite unique as a former padawan with unfinished training until Kal Kestis appeared. His dynamic with the Ghost Crew and specially Ezra was very endearing, and it was awesome to see he grow as he needed to better teach Ezra.
Finished Rebels last night and it is 100% the best star war series in my opinion. I love Kanan and Ezra’s relationship and they’ve easily become my favorite two Jedis
I think Kanan and Hera just kept their private lives private. Like Mom and Dad.
I really enjoyed watching Kanan and Ezra go from master and apprentice to father and son like. Plus the relationship of Kanan and Hera is cute. And Jacen is adorable.
Even seeing it in a summary like this, I *still* cry at Kanan's death.
Easily one of my favorite Star Wars characters
Same
I think it's so wholesome and great that you keep newer fans or fans unfamiliar with animation all that info in concise digestible chunks. Some fans are gatekeepers, you are a gate-key, as in the key that unlocks and open the gate. ❤😊
Also, if anyone at Lucasfilm is watching, Pablo Hidalgo or whoever, please hire him in some form (if he wants to), maybe he can run a database, become a consulting producer or maybe even connected to the story group?
I found it interesting that Huyang called him “Kanan Jarrus” in the episode, since he would have known him as “Caleb Dume” from his time in the Jedi Order. From an out of universe perspective, in completely makes sense since more people would recognize the name “Kanan.” In-universe, I suppose you could consider “Caleb” and “Kanan” to be two different people/identities, so it would be more accurate to say “Kanan” is Jacen’s father as opposed to “Caleb.” That or Huyang just updated the name in his memory banks.
That and even after knowing his real name, the Ghost Crew still calls him Kanan. It’s what they’re used to
I love Kanan's comic origins more like much more!!!
Can't agree enough. That scene was one of the most heavy, heart-wrenching scenes in the whole star wars franchise. This is why i really hope Kanan is part of the Ashoka series in some way (obviously as a vision or something like we saw with Anakin)
I've seen Rebels atleast 5 times through and i still clicked on this video immediately. ❤
“So much like your father”
He's one of my favorite Jedi along with Luke and Ahsoka
I'm starting to question Hera's parenting skills. First she brings Jacen into a combat zone, then she leaves him alone with Chopper, who, for various reasons, I'm not sure is the ideal babysitter.
To be fair, that's all she knows. Hera was raised by warriors and spent her entire childhood at war and kept fighting into her 40s. She was on the frontline and even being tortured while she was pregnant with Jacen. We see the Ghost at the end of Rise of Skywalker which means Hera and Jacen are probably still fighting when she's 70.
Tbf, Chopper may not be the best example to live by, but that droid will gleefully murder anyone who would threaten the kid.
She’s practically raised three kids already lol, Jacen’s gonna be fine
I loved this episode. It was perfect from beginning to end
I know who he is, but I watched this anyway because I enjoy hearing about Star Wars.
Its been said that Kanan and Hera had sex just before the latter used the outdated U wing to fly back to Yavin.
See this is why I cant understand how it can be a chore to watch the animated series IF you follow the live action.
The animated series is just as compelling.
And for awhile it was all we had in terms of Star Wars content.
Saddest death in Star Wars
Another amazing video
Your summary does not do him Justice, but it does hit the main points. Kanan is one of my favorite characters in all of Star Wars, and I was so glad when he finally received a mention in the latest episode of Ahsoka.
Why do you say Kanan and Hera didn't enter into a full-fledged relationship? Just because it's prominently on-screen doesn't mean the relationship wasn't there. Star Wars Rebels was primarily a kid's show, so they didn't need to focus on their romantic relationship in the show. Hera refers to Kanan as "love" several times throughout the series, even in the first few episodes of Season 1. I'd say they were in a full-fledged relationship the entire time.
It's a given that Kanan and Hera were long time "bunk buddies" on the Ghost but clearly they had never actually gotten around to actually uttering the "L" word to one another. Hera saying it to Kanan in "Jedi Night" finally made their couple-dom official.
@@jackdubz4247 As I noted in my initial message, Hera literally calls Kanan "Love" multiple times in season 1.
I totally agree, it is obvious they were a couple, they even were portrayed as mom and dad of the "kids". That sometimes the fight put a strain on the relationship is a given.
I need to have Jacen appear in Skelton crew or some form to be a Jedi now! The actor is doing great job!!
As long as he doesn’t end up as one of the members of Luke’s new Jedi Order…
When his eyes turn green to match Hera’s. I realized she was his sight through his struggle.
Friends with benefits implies they were not in love. Anyone who watched them could tell that Kanan and Hera were deeply in love, even though they kept those feelings private.
Hera and Kanan are alone with nobody else around a couple times in Season 4, take your pick of the the tower outpost or rocks that served as a base camp, those make the most sense. I'm going tower though, they had to shed their disguises from the previous episode. 😏
I think Vanessa Marshall asked Filoni when Jacen was conceived in Rebels, since her having Jacen completely blind sided her. His response was, "Oh, you know, during a commercial break", lol.
@@itsasquid 😂😂😂
I miss kanan
My headcanon is that Hera concieved from the kiss
Make a video explaining who that guy Ahsoka was fighting in the last episode was, a small character like him needs to be explained for the casual fans.
Now I'm curious to know how many people have Ahsoka as their introduction to Star Wars. I'm sure there's at least one
Wish I could see him on the big screen in live action!
When Kanan is mentioned, me and other SW fans felt emotional. Carson Teva’s reaction to the mentioning of Kanan is the same as those people who haven’t seen Rebels.😂😂
How to describe Jacens dad: a true jedi
My headcanon is Jacen was conceived in Ezra’s tower while the kids were off on a mission
You could have Carson's 'ok' at the end of all your videos! 😂
I feel like Ezra will end up training Jacen. I’m sure he’ll be happy to find out that Kanan and Hera have a kid.
A little bit weird that his paldron fits so very well on Jacen’s shoulder. It seemed so much bigger on Kanan’s shoulder.
I just take it to be that its not Kanans paldron but just simply the family crest sized for Teens.
I am going on the assumption that "Aunt" Sabine made a new one especially for Jacen. So that he could remember and honour his father's legacy.
I wonder what color lightsaber Jacen would have if he was trained as a Jedi. I think it would be blue but who knows.
If Ezra comes back, I'm sure he'll train him.
But yeah, blue saber I guess.
R.i.p. kanan.
REALLY hoping for a Kanan force ghost at some point…that’d be awesome!
Even when I was 15 when Rebels began, I liked how Kanan had a few similarities between Rahm Kota (mainly visually) and (primarily) Kyle Katarn
Rebels is flat out the BEST Star Wars since the OT. I am actually envious when I come across people who have never watched b/c it means they have yet to experience the glory that it is. I think the Clone War series is fantastic and in my mind justifies the entirety of the Prequel Trilogy, but Rebels is just in a category all it's own. If you've never seen, please do yourself a favor and GO WATCH IT!.
I agree. I loved Rebels
Come on, Alex. “Friends with benefits???” 😅. They were a couple that took time for them to admit it to themselves and to each other. I don’t think their relationship was as trivial as “friends with benefits”.
Kanan and Dume are both place names in Malibu.
It's funny how some people are saying Jacen looks more like Ezra.
She repeatedly calls him "love," throughout the series. I'm pretty sure they were a thing through the whole series.
I've watched those 2 episodes related to Kanan's death many times and there are things that I just recently understood. Before going to save Hera, Kanan asked Ezra to lead the mission and says "That´s what we need to save Hera... and everyone else". He already knew he was going to die saving others and he did it anyway. He went to the fuel depot knowing it was the place of his death. When Hera was being tortured by governor Pryce she was pregnant and I believe Kanan already know that through the Force. And lastly, when Hera is with Chopper in the cave where Kanan cutted his hair she says "why did I wait so long to tell him? I thought there would be more time". She did said "I love you" to him before he died so I think in that scene she's talking about telling Kanan about his son, who we know she called Jacen.
Even more, the voices Kanan hears when he's meditating at the begining of S4E10 Jedi Night! One of them is Hera saying "You haven't gotten me a present since we first met" and that's exactly what she says to him when he gives her the kalikori of her family the night of his death! Amazing show Rebels.
Rebels is a Y7 cartoon, they obviously weren't going to explore Kanan and Hera's sexual relationship.
Kanan and Hera share a room on the Ghost, they are obviously in a relationship, but its a cartoon for 7 year olds not Hentai.
I'd have also brought up the Loth-Wolves, but given this is aimed at people who haven't seen Rebels and animation in general... it's understandable you might not want to bring up how the wolves took interest in him and how his will through the Force appears to have manifested in Dume, the giant wolf.
Kanan is just a very good character, even people, who don't like Star Wars Rebels have to admit it.
I wonder how many Jedis were friends with benefits
Interesting to note, that in Star Wars, why Luke keeps his father's last name but Jacen does not with Kanan? It would be a good topic to discuss about.
Maybe to protect him from persecution from the empire? Or because it's a fake name and he'd have to name him his original family name.
Or he wasn't alive to register his child
I also think Luke having the last name not disguised is dumb. He should've had a fake name as well. Skywalker should've been his family secret his uncle and aunt should've kept and revealed later. But the original movie didn't have the idea thar Vader was his father yet so I think it's an honest mistake
it's because Darth Vader = Anakin Skywalker was only fully decided in ESB. When ANH was made, iirc, they were different people. At the time Luke's father, the Skywalker, was an elite Jedi pilot and Knight who was killed by a guy whose full name was Darth Vader. Notice how in ANH Kenobi used "Darth" as a name, not the title of a Sith Lord (because the concept of the Sith only came later, too).
It's also why you get all those romantic scenes between Leia and Luke, and why Vader , standing RIGHT IN FRONT OF LEIA, couldn't sense her Force Sensitivity. Because they weren't siblings until ESB, too. Or was that RoTJ?
Edit: Also, wasn't Padme and Anakin married? Hera and Kana weren't.
The Star Wars Universe may also be less consistently patriarchal with its name passage. I also think that Hera, since she knew she was going to be a single mother, thought that her kid might as well have her last name to make things less confusing to people who don’t know her past.
Hera added Kanan to the Syndulla Clans’ kalikori and giving Jacen her last name kind of round their family unit out while keeping Jacen connected to his Twi’lek roots. So maybe someday Jacen can see Ryloth as his home
I thought Kanan and Hera were friends with benefits since episode 1
I gave it a shot but I don't even understand what's happening anymore.
Yea it can get a little confusing lol.
Basically Ahsoka has a way to get to the new galaxy now so she's going to rescue Sabine
Khm....Jacen Dume technically....or Jacen Dume-Syndulla or Jacen Jarrus or Jacen Jarrus-Syndulla...hihi
Wait.... if he just confesed his love before he died.. how and when dis they make their child? .. ....
So they were just friends with benefits? Can someone clarify?
The think I don't understand how he got a kid he died before
Kanon the last true jedi. Obviosly they had to use genetic engineering to create the kid. He might be a mule, but maybe their medicine is advanced enough to engineer that away. Interesting he has ears and hair. Mother does not. For FPJ, or Mrs Buffy, his greatest performance ever..
People really don't care about the sag strike. It's 74 out of 75 things to care about.
Jason is like 10y.o Ben Solo woth greenish hair. I mean the look very similar.
Mr. Star Wars Explained, is Ilum Not a Planet? Cause it’s Size
Ilum's smaller than a dwarf planet
@@arcadia7459 yes, But Ilum Wasn’t a Planet, But a Astronomical SuperWeapon Object
I love Filoni but I do think the comic version of Kanan's origin was better
"Friends with benefits" but getting to 1st base was a big deal. Logic not found🤦🏽♂Still questioning the whole conception of Jacen story arc🤷🏽♂
That emotional attachment stuff is bs. When Obi-wan fought ani he had feelings of sadness and regret. He also had so much feelings he asked yoda pls dont let me face ani.
1st🎉
Hopeful that Jacen doesn't go to Luke's academy. They have this kid there named Ben that's a real emo pos.
edit: who am I kidding? Kylo is gonna kill the crap out of Jacen.
Why does Jacen look more like Ezra?
Not a fan of Jacen (so far). His dialogue and presence in the show feels odd, clunky, and tacked on. In other words, he’s the most consistent Star Wars element we’ve seen in a long time
