SHOOTING WITH EYES CLOSED!! - Just because you can, doesn't mean you should...

  • This is a second follow-up video to a previous one I did for the channel years ago.
    For context; years ago I'd made a public comment voicing my opinion on the use of rear support bags for law enforcement snipers. Instructors teaching that rear bags were a crutch was what really bothered me. There was a heated exchange of projections (on my part as well) debating the importance of such support equipment.
    My POV: a rear bag that is small, lightweight, and purposely designed to fit a multitude of roles is mission essential gear for the sniper, most definitely a law enforcement sniper. This is a training issue; if training shows and highlights the importance of this piece of support gear, it will become just as important as a rifle, or other mission essential pieces of equipment such as radios, night vision, etc.
    The opposing opinion's POV; rear support bags are a crutch because the sniper probably won't have it on hand, or have the time and opportunity to bring it to use. In summary, using a rear bag in training is a crutch and as such shooting with one is a false sense of security.
    We can agree to disagree, or so I thought.
    Recently at a convention in Florida, the opposing opinion made a presentation about this subject and showed our "No Bag Drill" video from our channel. Here, the POV stated that I was hippocratic in my position considering that in the video shown I was teaching a drill that didn't include a rear bag, and I shot quite well.
    This is the genesis of this particular video, meant to highlight that just because you can do something, doesn't mean that you should, especially in a highly dynamic situation that law enforcement snipers face on the regular.
    I'll let the video say the rest.
    What's your point of view? We'd like to hear it over at the Modern Day Rifleman Network.
    www.moderndayrifleman.com
    We won't be engaging in any dialogue here in the comments, but we'd be happy to have a discussion over in the Network.
    Until then, you guys know the drill.... #kyfotg

    I am one of those cops who is responsible to make a precision shot under stress. I have two bags attached to my pack, ready to go with my rifle. I also have a tripod in my pack. My pack weighs somewhere near 45 lbs without water or food. But has, what I believe, the neccessary gear to acomplish the task I have volunteered for. I have not thought about shooting without a rear bag, but I will add it to my training. I have not shot with my eyes closed, but I will add that drill also.
    I am willing to learn any techique that will enhance my accuracy under stress. I don't consider my responsibilty a game. I try to train to take a precise shot, at the right time, for the right outcome.
    I shoot an AR10. I have been taught to "drive the gun". I have not had good results when I dont "get into the gun". I have watched a number of your video's and appreciate the content. If you have any you could recommend specifically for a gas gun, please let me know.
    Thank you for your efforts.
    Craig

    Solid advice. You wouldn't go to a crisis without a mag, why not a pint sized game changer...? It's light and makes for deadly accuracy. Easy enough to clip to a pack.... Being reminded of the importance of natural alignment is so valuable. It's so easy to get caught up on all the other gumph and lose touch with this fundamental. Loved the concept of "The evolution of technique" and what goes with it.... Super wise realisation.

    Excellent video. I am amazed this has to be discussed or explained until I heard you reference LEO’s. Not bagging on them, but most have never been on a crisis site or had make any shot let alone a low percentage one. Yet they largely remain resistant to anything not taught to them by a cop course.
    I know a lot of meat eaters who get this, some are cops so again, its not all of them.
    Definitely gonna share this video. 🇺🇸🏴‍☠️

    My thinking is none of these cops are beat cops. They all arrive in cars or SUV’s to a scene. They can literally have tripods if they want. If my job was to employ a rifle to save the life of someone I’d want my rifle to be as stable as possible. With everything going on why not take out the sloppy guess work?

    Do you drive the buttstock into your shoulder or you put very little pressure on your buttstock

      No drive, just enough to hold it there, using rearward pressure from the shooting hand to maintain that connection.

    • @jasonrad9332
      @jasonrad9332 Год назад

      Start with Hornady 4DOF app or something similar. DOPE or data on previous engagements, the old method would be to try out something and record in a book the correct data for impacts. Today we have much better technology to start that process.

    • @jasonrad9332
      @jasonrad9332 Год назад

      @@johncastleberry3923 I use my weather data from phone. You won’t get precise data especially if you’re using speed of the ammo box, it will be try dope. I still keep notes of what gave me impacts.

      @aagifford Год назад +1

      Sorry to say @@johncastleberry3923 but you seem pretty lost. You need to either a) take a best guess by looking through your scope and look with your eyes at the conditions and estimate, buy a Kestrel and measure, or take a class, or practice and learn, or all the above. Take a shot and miss, use the impact as a measurement, correct and take a shot using that new input and correction.
