I’ve been a road driver for 38 years in a big truck . Retired now when I saw this on my new truck I am excited.Don’t ever let anyone intimidate you and say backing a trailer is easy and “Why are you getting out of the truck to make sure your not gonna hit anything”Take your time,It’s ok to pull up and try again, just stay safe. This system I think will help a lot but still learn to use your mirrors while using the system. Systems break down and you wanna still be able to back your trailer. I have had 2 pop up campers and just bought a 38 foot travel trailer. I really hate backing. My son-in-law and a buddy of mine tell me all the time, "You just have to figure it out". They won't take the time to show me what I'm doing wrong. It's not a really intuitive thing to do. To me it's like teaching a kid to ride a bike. You don't just tell them to figure it out, or ride the bike for them. I just watched a few RUclips videos lately and I'm much better at it. I was able to back 8 foot wide my travel trailer into a 12 foot wide spot at the storage lot in just a few tries and didn't hit anything. My wife was impressed. My truck has backup assist, but not the Pro version with the little wheel. The camera uses stickers on the trailer a-frame to calculate the turning. I didn't set the system up yet and just winged it.
Amen. My truck doesn't have the pro feature. My wife has a knack of standing in my blind spots while giving me hand signals, then gets mad when I don't see her.

You said 'Switch to the camera view on the back of the trailer' - is that part of the blue tooth set up that Ford Pro Trailer Back up Assist Bluetooth PAIRS with the trailer backup camera????
How'd you connect the trailer cam to the Ford screen/button?? I've been told by 3 different sources (1 being a Ford service tech at Ford) that aftermarket backup cams for trailers cannot be connected to the existing Ford screen, and secondary screens are necessary.
Got a question I can’t seem to find an answer to. After setup, when you’re getting ready to use it, do you have to be straight when you activate it? Often I don’t start backing from a completely straight position and I don’t know if the PTBA gets confused when it detects the sticker if I’m not straight.
Picked up new used 2021 with Trailer back up pro but don’t have the sensor that form RUclips mention it’s that needed cuz I got 4 trailers all conventional. Should I call the deal back for this sensor device?
There’s a kit, add a sticker to each of your trailers and do the measurements. Watch the Ford Video to learn how to set it up. It’s no big deal. You need a measuring tape and a pen & paper to right then down the then type into the screen.
Sorry… I drive for a nation wide intermodal company. I pull 53 footers. I can’t relate. For people that don’t have the experience that I do, how does this help? Is it the opposite steer, or to much steering input? What is it that is so helpful?
I noticed that the demonstrator was able to toggle between the cameras included with the Pro Trailer Back UP Assist system and the auxiliary Rear Trailer mounted camera. I just bought my F350 SD with this system and had my Ford dealer install the rear mounted trailer cam. They configured it so that I have to get out of the vehicle and unplug the Pro Trailer harness and plug in the rear trailer camera harness to use it. They must have installed it incorrectly, but there is only one port in the bed (the other one is for the trailer). Anyone have experience with this?
You mean the aux camera that would go on the camera uses the same port that the backup trailer sensor uses? Thats my understanding, which makes me wonder how do you use backup assist feature AND and aux trailer camera if they both need to use the same port on the truck bed
It takes a little time getting accustomed to driving by the dash-mounted knob and camera, but once you get the hang of it, it's impressive--especially for straight backing. The spring-loaded knob defaults to 0 degrees so you can back-up straight without touching the knob or steering wheel.
I have a new 2021 F-150 XLT with this option and no one at the dealership in suburban Detroit can get it to work. It actually is so screwed up that I can't even tow my boat now without getting electrical fault messages constantly while towing. The dealer has replaced the APIM Module in the vehicle twice now and says that they need to call in a Ford engineer to look at the trailer and truck together. Oh yes, I only have 500 miles on the truck so I'm pretty sick about this. I wish Don Mattern could look at my truck and get me back on the road towing again!
Can someone at Ford please explain to me How I got stickers and s sensor for my 2021 f-150 pro trailer backing system . The stickers require an over the air download to work. How do i get the over the air download. My dealer has told me he had done everything he can do to make the stickers work and the people at Ford don't even know what i am talking about. Just think, if you had this back when you were learning, today you wouldn't know how to back up a trailer. I have mixed feelings on these things but ultimately, it's still very cool.
Saves a lot of time and possibly money if you’re hauling for a living. Often times you need to reverse and you dont know if there’s someone behind you. Using it to simply park means you definitely shouldnt drive
All you have to do is grab the bottom of the steering wheel. To go left turn the wheel left and to go Right turn to the right. It is that easy. No knob need.
I've never heard someone explain it that way and it could confuse people. When you say turn left you mean to turn the wheel clockwise to make the trailer go left, which is actually turning the wheel as if you were turning right. Just tell people to turn the wheel in the opposite direction that you want the trailer to go. Better yet, let people use this system without commenting about how it's unnecessary. Some people struggle with packing up a vehicle without a trailer. It's okay to use technology. you'll still be just as much of a man.

This actually looks much more complicated than just backing it up without having to press 4-6 buttons and then look at 2-3 cameras. Only thing useful is the part where the truck follows the trailer, but even that "benefit" is marginal imho.
This needs to be more computed. You map out the area where exactly the trailer goes and how much of an angle it has and u don’t have to control anything the truck just does it. When the back of the trailer is about to hit something the truck will stop. I think it would be cool if the truck could do this so u can get out of the truck and watch it

As a tractor-trailer driver, who backs 53 foot trailers behind a sleeper cab semi, literally every day, this is honestly harder for me to understand than just backing your trailer yourself. I will say, all the extra camera views are amazing. But that knob doesn't seem any easier than just backing your trailer like normal. If you can't back your trailer without this knob, you won't be all that much better with it.
@@northlander4370 As a yard jockey, I wouldn't necessarily say longer trailers are easier than short ones. They're just different. It all depends on the situation. If you've got a bunch of room, the 53' will be easier. If you don't have a lot of room, and you've got to back around corners, the short trailer will be easier.
Cool and all I guess... my debate would be if you are towing a trailer you need to learn how to back it up manually.. it's really not that hard. Find an empty lot, bring some cones and go to town. I do like the camera option at the back of the trailer if alone when backing up.. large RV trailers and car trailers ect it would help to ensure you do not bump into anything. Just gotta remember, turning the wheel left makes the trailer go right, and the other way around. lol.
You can learn how to use the mirrors and work the wheel, but can't learn to see behind the trailer. The cameras are the real value in this system, not the silly little knob.
@@lmychajluk And aftermarket cameras are cheap. $200 and you've got a decent wireless backup camera on the rear of your trailer. More than half of this electronic crap that they keep insisting on putting in these trucks is completely unnecessary, can cause parasitic draws on the battery, and over-complicate repairs.
Omg, you had to go to a parking lot, use cones and practice that way just to figure out how to back a trailer up?? IMO, anyone who has to go to those lengths to back a trailer up shouldn't be buying/towing trailers. Just face it, you aren't cut out for it. Leave towing to real men.
@@AsTheWheelsTurn Oh please, these guys are BULLYING dudes who haven't yet learned the very simple act of backing a trailer up or that feel like maybe this tool would help them. Not cool. Plenty of them are also telling people they shouldn't be towing or on the road at all if they "need" this tool. It's just not cool and I can't stand bullys and guys who constantly need to feed their tiny egos. Oh, and I've been researching trucks because I'm about to buy a new one so I've run into these comments all over the place.
Pro Backup Assist is a separate option from any other package on the Lariat. I'm looking at a loaded SD Lariat Tremor right now, but it doesn't include the Pro Backup Assist or the 5th Wheel Prep. Adding the Gooseneck/5th wheel rails and wiring is no big deal, but the Pro Backup Assist has to be factory added. Probably will end up ordering a 2021, but they did away w/ Blue Jeans and Magnetic, my first 2 color choices... Grrr....
Yeah, Lariat is NOT what it used to be. Lariat is now just middle grade. Lariat is now what the XLT used to be, basically you get leather seats and that's it. They did this because of the massive price increases from the last few years. You think, oh, well it's expensive but I am getting a Lariat but you don't stop to think that the $72,000 you paid is on the LOW side and, really, you've got to pay $82,000 these days to get all the features you used to get from a Lariat. Prices are insane on these trucks now.
I just got the fx4 super duty super cab with 8ft bed last week. Not much to choose from right now. It had everything I wanted and a few extra things I didn’t. This system being one of them. I’m a truck driver by trade so I really don’t need it. But I will admit the camera’s are pretty cool. I don’t know if someone ordered it that way or if the dealer did. Vinyl floors and cloth seats no power seat but has the sync 3 with all the options. Unusual mix. I doubt I’ll ever use it. Truck sticker was almost 52k. Love the truck so far. Especially the Godzilla under the hood.

I’ve been trying for sometime to learn how to back up a trailer: I need to know for what I do, I deliver wood to residential neighborhoods for a living. However, I was always nervous about making the back up turns into certain driveways. This Elimniates that specific risk factor for me. When I am ready, I am most definitely going to get a Ford F-350 super duty. Thank you Ford for putting this function on your trucks, you have me as a 100% loyal customer😎👍
Or you could just learn how to back a trailer. It's not that hard. Just takes a little practice, y'know, like learning how to drive except in reverse. Personally, I don't want any system to ever have the ability to take control of my wheel. No "trailer assist" or "parallel park" thingy or whatever else you white collar executives think we want. Things break. What happens if there's a short and this system decides to take control of my wheel at the wrong time? Or it doesn't release control when I'm done using it? Or the damn thing just breaks and I'm screwed because I never put even the tiniest bit of effort into learning how to back a trailer manually? You're over-complicating things, Ford. You're putting too much effort into marketing your trucks to the weekend warrior who wants a pavement princess. Guys like me who use our trucks daily _as a truck_ and not a grocery getter don't need or want all of this useless electronic garbage. It's stuff like this that's the reason why all of my trucks are 20+ years old. No thanks, I'll pass. P.S. Please bring back manual crank windows and vinyl floors. It's a truck, not a Lincoln. P.P.S. And mechanical turn signals. Worked fine for decades. I shouldn't have to check the owners manual to figure out how to signal. If it ain't broke...
That’s kind of like calling cruise control a dumb idea because you can just use the pedals. It’s more of a convenience factor. Anyone who uses this tech without first learning how to backup a trailer will find themselves very frustrated when the system kinks. It will first sound an alarm and tells you to take over and then it disables itself. You have to re-engage the system, which takes about 20-30 seconds. Then whatever causes it to kink again (sun glare or other camera obstruction to the sticker) will stop the system again. Everyone around you will be wondering why you keep stopping in the middle of a backup. After that experience at a boat launch, I gave up on it and learned how to do it manually.
If you can't backup a trailer without using the Knob, then you should not be backing anything up. The knob is the most useless thing Ford ever invented.
If you’re a marginally decent driver, you can spend 10-15 minutes behind the wheel practicing trailer backing and you will be more than capable of getting any trailer where you need it. This device is counter intuitive for the experienced driver. Instead of looking out the mirror and or over your shoulder you are now staring at a tv screen, checking the mirror and turning a tiny knob while the big wheel spins about like it’s possessed. This makes no sense. I’ve attempted to used this device and I just laughed because it was so much easier to just look out the mirror and use the steering wheel. Granted I have done it old school for 40 years. If you don’t know how to back a trailer “old school” and you don’t learn you’re stuck with this device. If you have the ability to back a trailer this device is useless. Yet another knob on the dash you paid extra for that will never be used. I call this marketing of the ultimate Rube Goldberg device.

The longer the trailer the easier to back it up ...longer trailers react slower .
@@northlander4370 it's the total opposite.
Naughty Boy no it's not
@@northlander4370 As a yard jockey, I wouldn't necessarily say longer trailers are easier than short ones.
@@suburbanhobbyist2752 man you you have a huge chip on your shoulder.you should maybe think about why that is...
@@AsTheWheelsTurn Oh please, these guys are BULLYING dudes who haven't yet learned the very simple act of backing a trailer up or that feel like maybe this tool would help them. Not cool. Your comment wasn't that bad actually but most of the others are ridiculous and only exist because these guys are so lame they think knowing how to back a trailer up is some kind of difficult or special skill and are 1) making sure people know they don't need this system and 2) making sure guys who don't know how to back a trailer up know they are better then they are (which is about as stupid as it gets).
I got the full souped up tremor lariat for 80k and didn’t receive any of the pro trailer back up or extra cameras. Pretty disappointed
Surprising
@@AsTheWheelsTurn Its a freakin standalone option, not part of the package, so no its NOT part of the reason the packaged trucks are so expensive.
That doesn’t look very good
In my opinion if you can't steer a trailer with your steering wheel then you shouldn't pull a trailer.
WTF is with you guys? Are you THAT proud of the fact that you took the 10 minutes it takes to learn how to back a trailer up that you now look down on people who could use the extra help of this device? Grow up. Nodody cares that you can back a trailer up. It isn't hard, AT ALL.
@@suburbanhobbyist2752 IKR !!!... Ive done it a few decades with all types of boats cars trailers 5th wheels... guess what... I can't wait to use it...!!!!!! Im proud as hell to finally have some assistance besides my wifes "help"
I memorize all my important contact phone numbers, but I prefer speed dial 😉
Just learn how to back up a trailer.... Jesus...
If your that sorry you can't back up a boat or a tailor, you shouldn't be driving one ....WTF
Am I the only one who thinks this is not cool? I have this in my Ford and never use it. I guess it’s for people who can’t drive
I have it and don't use it either, but I don't think it's "not cool". I think it's great for people who don't get a lot of practice with their trailers and could use a little help. Guys on here seem to think if they can back a trailer up that is something to be proud of, like a major life skill or something when it isn't. They demean the dudes who aren't that great at it and it's ridiculous.
I agree, I can back up a trailer just fine without it.
@@suburbanhobbyist2752 Sorry where I come from general blue collar work is a life skill but I am not going to demean anyone for it. The F150 has always been a "workhorse" now its turning into a luxury for urban dwellers that blue collar people cant afford.
@@godgoldgunsngolf6733 this guys really mad that technology is advancing
I don't need it but some folks do. If you don't think so ... just go to the nearest lake to where you live on a Saturday and pack a lunch. Pull up by the boat ramp and sit back & eat some good food and watch all of the people with boats who do not understand how to back their boat trailer down the ramp! It is hilarious, and if you are lucky you might even see a good fight when tempers flare and patience is lost. Lol
This is about when you realize you have no business driving a truck and trailer.
lol this tech is for people that don’t know how to back a trailer. Lmfao
Ya ever been to a crowded boat ramp? See RUclips, it's a shit show.
Exactly why I use it
a guy on two wheels we have the tech, why not fucking use it. It’s like anything else that gets invented like normal backup cameras. It’s pretty genius if you ask me and it seems a lot safer and easier then the traditional way. If you don’t like it, don’t buy and and don’t use it. What’s the problem?
@@NytronX Yes, I have. And it's very easy to tell the difference between those that _drive_ a truck and those that _use_ a truck.
@@maingun07 Yep, so my point is that even people that are experts at backing up trucks should be happy about this technology, because noobie weekend warriors at the boat ramp can use this as a crutch and it will allow them to launch faster, wasting less of your time.
doesnt work with a camper !!
This is the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen. If you need this, you should never even hook up to a trailer! 😂😂😂
I was curious how this worked but um yeah its convenient but I'd rather back up a trailer the old fashioned way
Okay dude. We all get it, you are an awesome trailer backer upper. Wow, you must be so proud. Give me a break.
@@suburbanhobbyist2752 why yes I am.
If you need an auto trans to shift you should not drive, if you need 4x4 to dive off road, you should not dive off road, if you need power power to roll up your windows, lock your doors, move your seat you should not drive, if you need toilet paper to clean your ass you should not eat.....if you want a sunroof get a jigsaw
If you can’t back up your trailer you shouldn’t tow it wtf happened to being a man these days
Nothing. I am a senior woman who needs help.
who needs all this crap!
those who can afford and want it.. buy a XL if thats what you want DUH
The back up knob is embarrassing. Wish Ford didn’t have it. Leave it to ram and gmc owners for that nonsense 😂😂
If it ain't broke...
why don't you just use the steering wheel? i drove tractor trailer for years and thats how we did it! this is plain dumb!!
I've learned nothing from this video
