I remember my first couple breaths of tear gas wasn't too bad. Then my throat started to itch on the third breath. On the fourth breath I couldn't see anything and my head felt like it was going to explode from being shoved full of razor blades from the chest up to my sinuses.

I did this on Parris Island. It was raining, so we were wet coming into it.
The mask we used, the AVON M50, has the ability to clear the air around your eyes, by covering the exhaust port and blowing. Not sure if you can do that with your mask.
It's bad, like you felt, but as I'm sure you realized, it's a psychological weapon first and foremost. If there was tons of normal smoke in a building, and you had to run inside with a similar mask, I'm sure you'd feel a lot more confident, which is the purpose of these exercises.
Personal recommendation: Do not try OC spray next. It burns more, but more importantly is lasts for 3 days after washing it off. Don't frick with that stuff.
