    Good explanation and a sure way to check the piston clearance, even if you have the bore guages and micrometers this is a good extra check.

    Excellent explanation. I've never known there was such a big difference in the piston diameter at the top and bottom. Is this just because of the heat of the flame front which expands the top of the piston?

      That's correct. It also explains why engines smoke more when cold because the ring pack isn't fully activated until the piston is at temperature, and the "looser" rings allow oil past them.
