Disco Elysium is such an amazing game. After an emotionally harrowing experience, your guardian angel wakes you up, and the first thing you can ask them is "what happened to the piss jacket?"
Kim’s portrait is so fascinating to me. Ever since I first saw it I’ve thought of it regularly. The contrast between the symbolic, religious imagery of a halo vs the fact he very much looks like just some ordinary dude in his 40s, it’s just so interesting.
I Always thought that the portrairs are a representacion of how Harry sees other people. for Kitsuragi he sees as the only Person he can rely on thus the angelic resemblance, while Jean got a dark background because Harry cannot count on his help or maybe because after so many years working in the RCM and seeing the worst mankind has to offer, it reflects the trauma those interaccions gave him.
Actually, you're half right there! Jean's background is reminiscent of old rectangular halos from old paintings of angels; Jean's partnership is ancient and darkened, but he remains angelic because, in his own pained way, he still cares for Harry even if Harry's old self has let him down so many times.
@@tonyatally353 hadnt made the connection!! From my understanding though square halos symbolise being noteworthy for earthly actions rather than heavenly. Such as a pope who built many churchs. This could point to how jean is the one who built harry up, he is the organised one, but jean is depressed he could help harry gain status, but couldnt help his self destructive nature. Kim is different Kim doesnt believe in Harrys methods, but seems more able to build up harry emotionally. Kim is a better emptional crutch than Jean but Jean might have been a fircer advocate
i’m pretty sure the driver’s license aspect also applies to Racist Lorry Driver, since it’s basically the same background and he’s in the same profession as tommy
@@Summersong2262 That's really interesting. I don't know how exactly but now that you mentioned it tequila sunset and sunrise parabellum may be some parallel
@@megagofer1020 I think it makes sense in the light of Harry being given a clean slate and a second chance. A new day for him, and a new opportunity to choose what sort of person he wants to be. Kim is a little like an angel, send when someone needs a little guidance and help. Kim doesn't really drive the game, but he's always there supporting Harry. And he doesn't exactly force him to do anything, just nudges him in the right direction and hopes that Harry will make the right choice. And at the end, when by all rights Harry should have died at the Tribunal, Kim's there. +1. +2. And 'God, please'. And he draws his pistol and shoots the only person he ever hurts over the course of Disco Elysium, and the person he shoots is a monster. And he WANTS to use his gun, there's a lot of moments where Harry can tell that he sort of twitched for it, or his hand closed around an invisble gun, etc. But he chooses not to, moment to moment. To be the better man. Harry DuBois died, in a sense. And then he woke up again, and over the course of a few days in Martinese, he chose to live. And he wouldn't have survived to his new Sunrise if not for Kim.
Also, one thing I picked up while taking a good look at is the asymmetry. At a first glance things look in order, with a basic mustache and even the two circles of his tattoos beinf symmetrical. Taking a closer look, one of his cheekbones is smoother than the other, a small hair strand is loose in the top left of his forehead, even his eyes and nose have small distinctions that give them hints of asymmetry. It's like he's trying to keep up this chill, orderly guy stuff but his problems are peeking through little cracks in how he presents himself.
Little guess work here, but I love how his body overlaps the white rectangle outline, like he's an artist who's literally trying to think outside the box
The existence of your channels brings me so much joy, thanks for showing disco Elysium to me. It has been an amazing journey, and it all started with you my friend. 😊
I just finished Disco Elysium for the first time this week and was just blown away by how unique and introspective it felt from start to finish. I watched your video on the portraits and my love for the game swelled only further - all the little intimate details of each portrait reflecting each character and state perfectly is just peak satisfaction. Thank you for your work on these, I've enjoyed watching immensely!
“The piss-jacket, Kim… you took it off?” Harry has his priorities in order
Because we had a deal! Kim had no right to take off that damn jacket.
I got that dialogue on my first playthrough despite having never gotten him to wear it…must be a bug
@@adaoarfishes9405it's probably cause it thinks we had him wear it after hustling those wannabes
@adaoarfishes9405 yeah I didn't know what that was about either
Fr, I was so heartbroken when I woke up and he didn't wear the jacket anymore

i love that kim's portrait is just the very first piece of concept art they made for him but coloured in. he was perfect from day one
Tommy is a good fellow. He once gave me one of his three rèals
Tommy's portrait just being his driver's license is such a great observation, and one that's so easy to miss if you're only observing casually.

This also explains why your Portrait is blurry before looking in the mirror
Fun part with kim. Is that the portrait could be a future vision of kim from shivers.
Since harry seeing moments of future events is canonical

Tommy with that Disco Elysium's 1000-yard stare
Kim, the saint. Harry's guardian angel. *HIS* Innocence.

Truly all he is, racist & a lorry driver! At least from Harry's perspective
I never thought about what type of expression tommy was doing in his portrait but it makes so much sense now! That's why he looks so sad, poor tommy😢
The circle behind kim may also represent the rising sun, as in Sunrise, Parabellum
Compare with 'Tequila Sunset'. ALSO with Lille Carter having some sun motifs as well.

Literally just talked with my Homie about the fucking boombox in Disco Elysium for like 45 minutes and it’s great
oh...... maybe i'm tommy.......
I'm sorry buddy... me too

I thought people knew this already, but the circle around Kim’s head is a halo in classical art. It’s typically reserved for saints and angels.
I love how detailed every single character was I love this game so much
And the portraits of characters correspond with portraits of skills, this game is truly unique and amazing.
That's just Earl Hickey from My Name is Earl
Oh my god it really is.
Tommy looks like Joe Talbot a little bit
another hamrock jobo classic
You used the clip of that lady in the interview at the end XD
i always thought tommy just stared at people like that
Tommy is me. Trapped in a loop for the sake of others...sacrificing his own dreams and happiness.
Can we get pale latitude compressor asmr 10 hours
even better analysis,sign me up!!!!!
If you search east asian buddhism portraits, they all have that exact same halo.
im gonna cry
Tommy is such a real one man
These videos are so cool
It's neat because it's a proper medieval halo
Does anyone know the name of the soundtrack playing in the beginning?
“Instrument of Surrender” on the disco elysium ost, which is the same tune from “Cleaning out the Rooms,” would recommend :)
Martinaise Daytime (early version) :)
The colours on his skin is trying to break out.
I cry
I feel like Tommy was also inspired by the kurvitz, but it’s a really real guy
Is there anything such as a disco elysium artbook? I would love to see it...
its on steam but you can also source it from somewhere else with a little research :)
Tommy le homme was my discord pic for months cause were twins
Here is to Disco 2 3llisyium
Interesting
Why is everyone French in disco Elysium.
some of them are british (harry, for one), dutch (klaasje, the cuno (tho he speaks w a brit accent)), or finnish (cunoesse (same thing))
Measurehead is the best
Stop yapping about nothing bro it's just portraits 😂😂😂😂
i have really bad news for you about 90% of all youtube videos
it is really interesting the way Harry deifies/associates with religious elements both Kim and Dora
