Medieval Warrior Bishops Who Ditched The Robes for Armour...
We usually expect a ‘turn the other cheek’ attitude from men of the cloth. But during the Middle Ages, there were quite a few holy men who ditched their priestly robes and pulpit preaching for full-body armour and battles. Let's travel back in time now and meet some of these hard-edged bishops who were happy to get personally involved in the fighting. Welcome to Medieval Madness

I sent you an e-mail. Can you take a look please?
Bishops were brutal, moving diagonally the way they did.
😂😂
But they could only move on white or black grass
And they were always so black and white about life.
😅😂😂😂
Imagine being mid battle and seeing a fucking bishop rushing at you. What a way to go.
Nah, all you have to do is stand in front of them. They can only move diagonally.
Stand on a different color. You’ll be good
As if they are different from everyone else...
Same kind of trash.
@@cujokila The the highly agile queen comes and takes you out.
and instead of moving straight forward ,it moves diagonally ! 😮
Incorporating a Bishop's mitre onto a great helm might be one of the coolest things to come out of the middle ages.
Bashing the bishop is will get you in trouble with the One Upstairs no matter the era 😂
Man Odo was a real bro both figuratively and literally
It must be said, this is the best combination of modern take on historical person place or things, and done in a engaging and factual manner. The narrative and person, who's voice makes the channel, is suburbe.
I believe if given the chance, this quiet and tasteful channel will be found by someone who could bring the whole thing to a wider audience. Please don't.
I, in no way, am not saying to not expand, just to NOT allow a " expert" to remove what's. Been built and enjoyed by very many fans.
Thank you for all the work that goes into this wonderful channel.
Medieval Bishop: "Don't MAKE ME move diagonal on yo ass!"
Foot soldier imma turn into a queen
Very interesting and informative as always! There's a lot you talked about that I hadn't known about William the Conqueror, I enjoy learning new historical facts. Wish I could've been a history teacher! An amazing video and narration, thank you for all you do to bring us theze videos 😊
I dont see why they were so feared. They could only move diagonally.
@Medievalmadnesss
Thank you again for all you do!🎩🤓
Sending love your way from Nova Scotia 💙
Let the madness commence ⚔
Love it ⚔️ !!
Add in Bishop Bek. A loyal servant of Edward I who fought against the Scots essentially as an ecclesiastical knight and military commander.
Reminds me of warrior monks in Japan at the same time
There was a bishop that went to war in Vikings who was kind of cool.
I think that was Haehmund, mentioned @4:17
@@akaLaBrujaRoja yeah thats him lol.
Are we ever going to talk about brave Sir Robin?
Brave Sir Robin, who so bravely rode away?
I love bishops
I’m more a rook guy myself
@@JudasBoB270 I prefer knight moves.
The bishop pair is typically better than two knights
How about the baby-eating Bishop of Bath & Wells?
Bishop Absalon of Denmark would be a worthy addition to this company.
I would love a follow-up video explaining how or why the church allowed men like this to exist. Warrior bishops seem to go directly against evrything the church stands for.
Nice pictures
It's so funny how I get out of character time with the commercials, but not so exactly with the voice on your channel
Pope Julius ll ( ca. 1500) , went in armour into campaign,, the pope is also bishop of Rome.
That guy was fit... more of that, less bishops!
Please make a compliation of your videos into one long one so people can put them on their sleep playlists. Your voice is great; the sound fx are unnecessary
In the Medieval feudal system, it is impossible for a bishop to completely wash his hands from warfare. Even a pacifist bishop would lawfully still need to give men to his liege as part of his feudal duties.
What about Bishop Abselon !
The Crusades were Brutal as Hell. I bet even the Pope would of picked up a sword given a chance. Pope would of said, "For Odin. For Asgard!".😎👍💯
I saw a picture of allegedly a Medieval popes hand armour. These things were covered in spikes on the finger tips and knuckles and looked like they would deliver an extremely violent blow. For god of course 🙏😅
To busy beasting never-mind
“Odin” was so weak, that all the Swedish converted to Christianity
Is the Odin thing a joke?
@@claytonwestphal682 Totally. 😂✌️
I wish you mentioned it Baldwin IV 😔
Who's giving mass when all these bishops are off fighting?
Priests under their Bishops authority. Same as always.
Why is the german bishop who fought with Emperor Friedrich I in 1180s not noted?
It wasn’t a French victory, it was a Norman victory. The Normans and French were frequent adversaries.
Some of the pronunciation is odd in the narration. Is it a computer generated voice?
I've noticed the same. He's just reading a script written by someone else (who in turn has sourced the material from other youtube clips, hence no listed sources). Clearly doing it just for the money without any passion for the work.
As proof of the lack of interest, and knowledge, he once mangled the name of Columbus' ship Pinta and pronounced it Piñata. Must have been the first time he came across the names of the ships.
Gods preserve us from those who think they are in the right.
Normally i would agree but if you find yourself out numbered in a street attack or being infiltrated you might not have enough time to calculate how much appropiate force to defende yourself and loved ones with ? If you want to remain alive even to be quizzed by our 2 tiered rainbow police i suvgest you use overwhelming force eplaining later that you feared for your life and are now suffering from PTSD
I would just step out of their way, everyone knows Bishops can only move diagonally.
👌
I didn’t realise Paladins were an actual thing
Interestingly Gary Gygax heavily used Bishop Odo of beaux as the basis for d&d clerics
This guy at the start:
"WEeEeeE, might ...."
Actually made me double take😅
50 BMG
Nice to know they will be in heaven with Jesus - or not.
At about 6:35, during the piece on Baldwin of Forde, did I really hear you pronounce Worcester as, “War-chester”, in the same manner as one of my less knowledgable American countrymen might? I really hope that it’s just a niche regional British peculiarity, and not you mangling it, perhaps dumbing it down even, for the benefit of a largely American audience. That would be very disappointing. I’m correcting my friends and family on proper English geographic pronunciations all the time. If any of them ever mispronounce the suffix, ‘shire’, I immediately give them a dressing down, telling them, “It’s England, not Middle Earth, and unless something has drastically changed since my last visit, you will definitely not find any Hobbits there!”
Addendum: I think New Englanders, particularly from Massachusetts, would be the only exception to the typical American mispronunciation of 'Worcester'.😉
It's just a general lack of knowledge and interest I think. He's reading a script written by someone else. In a clip about Columbus, he once pronounced the name of the ship Pinta as Piñata. Really showed his level that time.
@@boogiesmell5181: I get that, but what confuses me, is that he’s a Brit, isn’t he, or am I just hallucinating? Any of the English that I’ve ever known, would never say such a thing, whether only tangentially connected to the information; whether disinterested in the story, or not. It’s only ever been “Wooster”, or maybe “Worse-ster”. It’s not Earth shattering for me, of course, just kinda baffling is all. From what the internet tells me, his name is James Wade. It says he is British, as if that weren’t already evident, and I believe I saw something connecting him to Cambridge, which if that’s accurate, makes it even more baffling. But as he also narrates the 'Walk the Plank' channel, perhaps others still, I doubt he’ll be taking the time for us to pick his brain here in the comment threads. If he weren’t dead, I’d say we hand it over to Robert Stack, because it’s likely to remain an unsolved mystery. Am I aging myself with that reference?😆
True Celibates are extremely strong.
I do wish that the narrator would find out how to pronounce names correctly. The content is interesting, but some of the pronunciation is cringeworthy.
He doesn't care. It's not about quality, but quantity, clicks and as much income as possible through as little work as possible.
The Roman Catholic Church desperately needs Bishops like this today!
That's for sure!
passing on this one because of the Ai thumbnail, makes me think this is low quality stolen slop, which is a shame cause i’ve enjoyed this channel up until now
Is that not literally judging a book by its cover?
Confirmed, this was low quality slop. But it usually is. MedievalMadness just recycles stuff from other youtube videos without doing any fact checks whatsoever. Hence they refuse to reveal their sources, as it would expose them as hacks.
Oh well if you reduce the medieval world to the UK and France it is complete............
Stop using AI slop thumbnails, just use some cool art, medieval or modern
real
Yeah. AI is gay
Why you don't do a medieval history youtube channel then?
Or even f*cking say 'please,' you damn animals.
@@JoseG117 what a childish dumb way to respond to criticism.
Its called clickbait lol
bi shops?
Worst sponsor transaction ever !!!
Lol yeah right, I bet they were as weak as shit.
What a poor load of waffle. I was bored when you showed mountains in Sussex. Do something else. If your sponsor watches this your done. Do it right
As soon as one see’s, “ Includes Paid Promotion” at the beginning of the video at the top left, such a video will be crap and a complete waste of your precious time.
Quite sure that you came to watch a video for its content, not to have some filthy commercial thrown in your face.
