Another technique is to present a dog as close as poss. to the ewe and lambs. The ewe will instinctively stamp her feet and protect her lambs and help the bonding.

Would this work for twins when mama is only rejecting one? (goats)

      I think so... try it!
I've never raised goats, but I think I've heard of goat owners doing this too.

yeah my first thought was head gate. May work well as a combo with the jug.
That is if you don't have time to grab legs anyways.
    Good tips!

    Cool video. =)
First calf heifers do this sometimes too. It's a pain, but you can "make" them be a momma'. If the mom is rejecting baby forcefully & knocking it around, you sometimes have to put them in a head-catch, & if they're kicking, tie one leg back the first few times the calf sucks. It usually only takes one or two sessions for them to love their baby.
I like the shelter. I made one similar to that with some old pallets & topped with the cattle panels.

Good info, thanks. So if this same ewe does the same the next time it gives birth will you consider getting rid of it?

That is called a poke and your poking the goats, and sheep. Cattle, you can just use their stantial. On harder to bond livestock, usually once the milk is processed through the baby, the mamma can smell their milk in the babies BM and recognize it as her baby. You can take a triplet and put it on a different momma that lost hers, doing this. We even skinned stillborns and tied the hide on a orphaned lamb to give it a new momma and a good mother a new baby. Works very well. Babies are better then bottle babies. We had a flock of 300 head of sheep on our farm growing up. We had a dozen cattle and half a dozen goats. With numbers like this, you get pretty efficient on helping mommas and babies. Good job! Nice strong baby there!! 😉😊😊

Thanks for sharing your vast knowledge about livestock.
I'm sure lots of folks will benefit. 👍😎
I've heard of folks using the "skinning" method too.
Also, catching the mother's urine and pouring it on the calf.

@@BIGALTX the only thing about putting a calf on a goat, if you let the calf suck her, you have to be right there all the time while its nursing. Calves can butt putty hard and rupture the mama goats utter. I let my calf suck till he got bigger and more rambunctious, then i milked her and let him drink the milk from the pail.

You don't worry the mother will harm the baby? We have had goats reject babies and they will kick at them, butt them, etc.

Hello. My sheep had two babies and its rejecting one. Now i do have a Pyrenees and she did lick the baby. Does that affect the momma rejecting the other baby sheep? Thank you hope yall can help me..

    • @BIGALTX
      @BIGALTX  7 месяцев назад +1

I don't think the dog smell had anything to do with it.
      Rejection is pretty common.
If there are twins, sometimes they will reject the weaker, sicklier lamb. (survival of the fittest)
Try to pen them up in a small area and MAKE it nurse.
After a few days she'll likely accept it.
The lamb HAS to get the first milk (colostrum) to survive, so do it quick.
If she doesn't take it, you'll have to bottle feed, but it HAS to get the colostrum first.
      Hope that helps,
      alan

Sorry, I don't know where you could find any.
But, I wrote this down a long time ago (but don't remember the source)
You might want to try it.
Or... you might try to find some cow colostrum. Might be OK... just not sure.
