You took bits of wood, worked at it and turned it into a beautiful thing. Sure a simplistic view is it's just a bowl but this really puts things into perspective and makes me think how much work goes into how much work goes into even seemingly simple objects now. Great video, thanks for sharing.
I got obsessed with turning bowls in shop class in highschool. my teacher saw how interested I was and all he requested from me was more bowls. Wood turning is a true art and you become heavily involved with the project you are working on. Great video, beautiful peice. I know how much work truly went into something like this. awesome job!
Now I know what it would look like if MC Escher could turn a bowl! My eyes and brain are fighting over who's right. TAG for the win. A truly marvelous creation. Thanks
Beautiful. Craftsmanship. That's quite a workshop. No wonder they are $600. My grandfather used to make similar articles in his garden shed with bits of scrap hardwood. He had a wooden bench and wood-screw vice that he made himself. Many of his tools were handmade, including his planes [from old chisels and lumps of wood. His lathe was hand turned till he fitted an electric motor to it. Not sure what happened to the dozens of items he made. Probably dumped in a house clearance. I still have some of his tools. They are my link to a generation that knew how to make things.
My father was also a carpenter a long time ago, and I had such jugs and platters at home, but they never came up with the idea of bonding wood and resin, and what you do is simply DELICIOUS !!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!
My question is who the heck are these viewers giving thumbs down. Was it for the music may be? What else could they possibly dislike about this project. Were they looking for a learning video with step by step instructions. This is a truly awesome display of skill and creativity. Very well done and thanks for sharing.
One of the most beaitiful bowls that Ive ever seen. Thanx for the insight on the work and creativity that goes into making a beauty like this! Excellent work and patience!
Amazing details and perfect craftsmanship ends up with a beautiful end result. Thank you for sharing this process with us.(Enjoyed the music too!) The planning that went into this design was well worth it. Great piece!
Almost 3 years later and 5 million views!! Thank you all so much again. I really owe alot to this one project and video. It sort of was the kickstarter for my woodworking career. To give some insights, i was just turning for around 3 months at the time that i was shooting this video. I learned from watching other youtuber's and their techniques like Mike Waldt, Carl Jacobson, Brendan stemp. At the time i was making some 3d cutting boards with the pattern, and it seemed almost like a logical next step to try to and make a thicker blank and to try to make a bowl with that. I didn't really had an idea of what it should look like, and i'm still not sure how it evolved into this shape. Although the video is relaxing ( as many people say), I was quite tense, since i barely knew how to hold my tools correctly, and was afraid of a violent 'catch' ( happends when your tool is presented to your work at the wrong angle ). Now, 3 years later i know alot more, of how to approach a woodturning project, and techniques. The process of making the tumbling bowl, has also become alot more material efficient.
Thomas Anton Geurts What is the name of the pattern you created with the checkered effect. I would love to practice creating a similar pattern for a table but I don't know where to start with dimensions for the diamonds
I am astonished at the skill you displayed after only three months of experience. That sort of explains the variety of tools you used both on the inside and the outside of the bowl, but the product is wonderful. One question. In between coats of the danish oil you sanded with sandpaper. What grit was that? Most of my colleagues who finish with oil use very fine steel wool in between coats.
Well I guess I’m behind the curve here seeing this incredible piece of mind-screwing illusional craftsmanship is at least six years old. I’m a lifelong woodworker, carpenter, craftsman, and the only piece of work that barely compares to this is a 3D chess board I made years ago. (No comparison at all) This optical illusion that started out as squared and then rounded out on a lathe, is just incredible. I don’t think I’ve seen a piece of woodwork combined with magic, that made me smile more and wonder. I understand the difference shades of wood making shadows and individual blocks, but I didn’t expect to be so fooled by the illusion in the bowl. What an incredibly wonderful thing to watch being created, and an almost frightening resulting illusion at the completion. Wow. Just magical man. Thank you for the most relaxing and mesmerizing point in my whole week.

Amazing optical illusion! It's a brain teaser to imagine running my hands over the surface expecting to feel stair steps of sorts, and it's all smooth! Very relaxing video too, thank you kindly, Thomas. Mike
I was scrolling through the first few comments from years ago, looking for one like yours. Yep. It’s a brain-teaser alright. This illusion just boggles the human brain as our eyes lie to us. I know that bowl is round inside, but we see square blocks with sharp corners instead. With most optical illusions like this it helps to turn away, think, and look again. That trick didn’t work for me this time. The illusion overpowers all logic. Maybe I like being fooled in this way? It makes life interesting. I’ve seen lots of 3D looking woodwork before, like cutting boards and such, but this bowl is by far my favorite. Cutting boards are flat and square so we can see through the illusion. But this incredible craftsman took that same 3D effect and made it round. With no plane as a reference point, the human brain can’t put reality into visual perspective. I love that. It’s one of those things you really want to touch to make sure you’re not insane. What a beautiful piece of work and a mind-f*ck that’s just memorizing.
Half an hour of my (after)life well spent! Escher-esque as hell, too, especially the glueing of the parts. Later, when the lathe stopped for a moment, I got vertigo. Might be the weed and the beers I had, though... Hat's off to you Sir, splendid work, all safety gears in place, good video footage, and erm, interesting soundtrack. Thumbs up! PS. If you ever want to sell your arms (with hands attached), I'm paying a fair price for used body parts.
I've never seen nor listened to a more beautiful video. 70 year old retired music educator here and amateur wood turner and lifelong admirer of Escher. You are an amazing artist, and thank you for sharing. Would also enjoy info on the soundtrack.
I just like all you do - and your video work is the best around...with the music overlaying the visual, it's almost total immersion on the part of the viewer. Thank you.
PotentialPaper when he was turning it, at the end of the video. there is a visual tumbling effect, the lines look as if the are bending or the blocks are falling over themselves.

All those huge pieces of timber, just for a single bowl Shows how hard it is to actually make that shit ... Unless the only hard thing is the time it takes to make one
Thomas I trust your judgement on Wood burning Question I want to Flame Treat some Maple wooden Baseball Bats for my Grandsons, But some are telling me that Maple wood can not be Flame treated, I would like your take on that.? Thanks for sharing love watching all of your flame work etc.
It's been a year, so you may have found your answer by now... but since nobody replied to your question... You can flame treat maple, but you just won't get a shard grain contrast like you do with Ash. Flame treated maple will have a more uniform & blended coloring.
Thomas, beautiful piece of work there!! What are you using for a finish on it? I would be paranoid of it cracking, as I live where the humidity is really low. Keep up the good work!!
I am noticing in all these woodwork videos the workman has an endless supply of exotic woods , plywood in all sizes , and of course way more equipment than the average home wannabe woodworker can afford. OTOH one day I hope to make what you have done so well.

Bad genes started the operations to remove 8 body parts, so far. From the ages of 4 to 57 I developed over 20 conditions and have been in the hospital so many times I can't count but a guess would be over a hundred. Three and a half years ago I started getting a burning prickly feeling on my left knee. No one knew what to do about it or what it was. Every month I would find a new doctor or nurse practitioner who would eventually scratch their heads and tell me they had no idea what was wrong. Over two years of not knowing really wore on my nerves and the condition spread unilaterally and new symptoms developed. A year ago I got a diagnosis and it was really a blow to my life.
I have Erythromelalgia. This is an inflammation of the veins, collateral and capillaries. Since the first symptom on my left knee it has spread to wrists, elbows, both knees, feet, palms, inside thighs and facial cheeks. It is irritated by temperature change, movement, stress, illness, emotions, sunlight and and having anything touching my skin. There are 7 things suggested to try to handle the pain but I went to a few doctors once diagnosed and offered myself up as a test subject. They put seven inch stents in both legs and a spinal block, both made it worse.
There is no cure.
The symptoms:
Unilateral flushing *redness as if an allergic reaction*
The feeling as if a cactus is being rolled on bare skin
Burning as if I have a sunburn and hot coffee is being poured on it.
Petechiae, which isn't painful but it makes people stare at me when I do go out which is only to see doctors.
When a new area starts you don't see the red but it gets hot enough to dry a wet paper towel within minutes.
Any temperature over 67 makes it continuous instead of my being able to bring it down with fans, water, numbing lotion and dozens of quackery tricks.
I am one of 71 people in the US that has being given this diagnosis. The diagnosis was hard won because of its rarity but also it starts at birth for most.

This is such a freaky amazing optical illusion!! Every time I look at it changes shape right before my eyes! It's gorgeous
Great video my man, awesome choice of working music.

i cant believe it sat still for half an hour watching someone make a bowl. is amazing........... how mouth in pices
No wonder these pieces are expensive! the amount of work and skill that goes into making these is incredible.
Spectacular! Congrats! 😲👍🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Simply amazing !!!
More satisfying than those darn click bait most satisfying videos.
I just like all you do - and your video work is the best around...with the music overlaying the visual, it's almost total immersion on the part of the viewer. Thank you.

i don't even know what a tumbling bowl is but i still watched it
PotentialPaper ?merçi
PotentialPaper me neither, don't worry
PotentialPaper when he was turning it, at the end of the video. there is a visual tumbling effect, the lines look as if the are bending or the blocks are falling over themselves.
Good for cooking soup :) the old ways.

This is a beautiful bowl and I so much appreciate your focus on safety.
Wow!! My grandpa made lamps and bowls and tables that looked like this! Now I finally can see the technique! Thank you!
Nice bowl. I keep playing this for the tunes. Got a playlist?
Wow, what strong is the 3D effect, at the begining, when is plane.
Beautiful!

The incredible thing about the video is not so much what it did, but the time it took to make the container. The video lasts 33 minutes, but making the container took days. I congratulate you. I really liked your job.
its not everyday you come across a channel with awesome videos and with awesome music... subscribing.
All those huge pieces of timber, just for a single bowl
Shows how hard it is to actually make that shit
... Unless the only hard thing is the time it takes to make one
There is something about dark wood sawdust that makes me crave a hot chocolate lol.
you should lable your next video"wanna see something fascinating"because this is very fascinating
aww Thanks Sophie!

You are so talented! Your workmanship is amazing!
And the end result is wonderful!!
Thank you!!
"RED ALERT CAP'M"

"WE'VE RUN OUT OF CLAMPS CAP'M!"
It's beautiful and a lot of work was put in but 1000 dollars is a lot to pay for a bowl lol
KCuber well he's probably got quite a bit invested in the project

I love woodworking. Watching this kid of videos show me why I do Love Woodworking, because my real name patients and I practice it so much. Wow
The AMOUNT of love in that bowl. Human beings sometimes amaze me.
Thomas, beautiful piece of work there!! What are you using for a finish on it? I would be paranoid of it cracking, as I live where the humidity is really low. Keep up the good work!!
Thank you so much Sig, Danish oil

I actually paused this when I went to the bathroom...
Or did you pause in the bathroom to watch this?
You begin to trip balls at 12:45
Thomas Anton Geurts Yes
i started doing the same,,,, i am still dizzy....
By the looks of your picture, you already have.
give em the clamps
I was watching the show and I was just saying to myself wow a lot measuring , but hard work turns into one beautiful piece of art .
I am noticing in all these woodwork videos the workman has an endless supply of exotic woods , plywood in all sizes , and of course way more equipment than the average home wannabe woodworker can afford. OTOH one day I hope to make what you have done so well.
fantastic!!
Guys I am beginner in woodworking and i found a website named
*TopFineWoodworking. Com* and i learned a lot at their. i also recommend this website to all you guys

What an impressive and outstanding work of art, even when I have some of those skills from your line of work but you left me breathless, this is unremarkable and out of this world, I have to congratulate you for this very fine job, please keep up the good work, from the endless summer paradise, Jesus Torres.

I wanted to ask the same.
Wonderful workmanship. And the music was so soothing that I nodding off a couple of times. Next time I'll turn the volume down. Lol!
I've been looking at videos for inspiration on what to make for my woodshop class and I really like this
Anyone else just really want to toss a salad in it?
Don't you dare! ;)

That's some strong glue..
CamoLog it’s just wood glue 😂 nothing special
You are skilled... I rarely see someone do something so nice from dead tree carcasses...

Greetings from Australia.
What a great design and well done.
Love the movement the contrasting timbers create.
Have subscribed and will watch more of your work.

Satisfying Productions has stolen this video and reuploaded it with different music and sped up. it's one of the masses of 'oddly satisfying' videos....
Phenomenal craft but the music made me cringe the entire time. Guess I could have just turned the sound off though.
But these are the fattest of beatz
Some of the music made me think of Red Shoes Diaryish...soft p o r n.
