      @Dandy Wellington I have yet to meet a shade of Salmon/Coral that I haven't loved. Along with that, I love turquoise, aqua, golden yellow, chocolatey browns, tan and camel. It's amazing how beautifully all these colors work together!

    think fit can be incredibly difficult as a trans man - i’ve found that 1890s style trousers can work, but styling vintage on trans bodies can be frustrating given how little information there is on it. that said, this was a very helpful video - thank you.

  • @Bananacustardcostuming

    My biggest issue is hats, I look AWFUL in all hats! Luckily my style is more Victorian to turn of the century rather than 1920s but dear me. I’ve tried trilby, pork pie, topper, boaters, all sorts and none of them look right on me!

    • @DandyWellington
      @DandyWellington  3 года назад +9

      Hats are tough. I really had to do my research. There are also a ton a hat style that exist in between the popular style. Also quite a few hat styles can be reshaped so they fit your style. That might be the way to do go. Reshaping hats to your liking.

    • @Bananacustardcostuming
      @Bananacustardcostuming 3 года назад

      @@DandyWellington I’ll have to experiment more, sadly my go-to vintage guy (Princes and Paupers in Cardiff) is closed as our country is in full lockdown, but shaping is a good idea. I’ll try and work with what I have until I can try on new pieces! Thank you!

      If porkpies and trilbies don't suit you, try a homburg or a fedora. Are your shoulders broad? The shape of a hat often goes along with the width of the shoulders (or so I've read; someone here can probably correct me), so if you're broad-shouldered, wider brims would work better, and vice versa. Newsboy caps also look good on everyone. Good luck!

    Excellent, excellent advice! For inspiration, check out all the Poirot movies and TV series. Probably the best representation of vintage is the lengthy BBC TV series with David Suchet. Given the past two years of the pandemic, finding better quality attire has become difficult. Several classic men's haberdasheries have gone out of business. However, eBay is a source for new old stock. I have found numerous new bowties with tags that way (Brooks Brothers, J.S. Blank, Neiman Marcus, etc.).

    Fit is the biggest challenge. I'm just shy of six feet tall, which makes finding modern clothes that were cut to fit my body proportions (think rise, length, distance from bust to waist to hip, where things taper,etc.) difficult. Finding repro vintage that does that is hard, and true vintage is even more rare. It's not something I've had the energy to invest in just yet.

    Thank you for making this. I am a guy and I just recently got into the idea of history bounding from channels like yours, Pinsent Tailoring, Bernadette Banner, and Morgan Donner. I have to admit the idea of staple pieces is good and the part of patience. I just have blue jeans and T-shirts and zero sewing skills so It is still hard for me to really know what works for me and dealing with the urge to just try and buy a whole outfit to get into it. I also see a certain item and think it looks cool, but I don't really have anything that goes with it or know how it could look on me or with other items. I do think I should try to find more images to see what I like and how to coordinate colors and other items. Also in what clothes are made of, I never really realized how many things are made of polyester and wanted to get more into natural material.

    Fab advice ! Can you please put the links to the places mentioned in the description? Because I love Ralf Lauren and menswear for women, but never heard of some of those places 🤔
    My greatest challenge in creating my vintage aesthetic is I am to big for true 40's- 50's . All I find is small stuff as in a 24" waist. Or, its over budget. I've given up and just sew it now.

    Perfect advice Dandy fellow 😊 from #thevelvetloungelife. You cannot repeat enough patience - - - it takes patience 👍🏼❗ Also, do not purchase on a whim and if you feel as if you're questioning whether you should keep something in your wardrobe or if you should buy something. Keep the thing your questioning and wear it a couple times until your decision is solid. However, wait before buying something you are questioning it will save you money, space and time. ✨🤗✨

      Actually, historically, that is a classy thing to do. Starting in the 1930s maybe even 1920s, some women started wearing mens clothes or clothes tailored to look like mens clothes. Katherine Hepburn and Marlene Dietrich are two who did so.

    Hi Dandy! Love your videos when I pop by. :) A question. Do you have any videos talking about this topic in larger sizes? My spouse really wants to start dressing dapper, but she gets so incredibly discouraged, heartbreakingly so, because she feels like she is too fat to do it. My encouragement has not been enough - someone who lives the life talking about it would go farther, I think.

      Start out with some retro brands! Unique Vintage is very size inclusive! The UK has a lot of brands tmas well! These can get expensive so join some buy sale trade groups on Facebook! I also personally use Facebook to look for legitimate vintage too. I'd also reccomend joining the "Historybounding" and "Historybounding Buy, Sell, Trade" groups on Facebook! We have a pretty sizable plus size community over there and lots of support!

    This is a wonderful guide! I've been putting together a retro menswear look--lots of sailor trousers and '40s style button downs--but the big problem for me is that I'm plus size (and the Covid lockdown isn't helping!) and it's been hard to find reproduction places that make clothes in my size, let alone vintage. Hence, I've been sewing a lot of my own stuff this year. There are pros and cons to this adventure.
