To answer your question about why the running game is less effective is because we had a quarterback run option where is this year we are way less dynamic with the run offense.
Offense - B- Much better than last year but far from elite yet. Defense - A Can't complain about their overall performance. A couple of games were so-so, but they are on track Special Teams - D Punter is a solid B+, but the rest is a solid F. Matt Rule - A Finally a great hire. I only hope he stays for a long time The end-of-season grade will depend on how we handle Ohio State and Iowa.
Offense grade C-. My beef with the offense is they go into play not to lose mode when they get a lead. Generally, 2 running plays up the gut then on third down, throw a predictable pass. This allows Huskers opponent the chance to wear our defense down by getting multiple first downs. Why not do as 3-time national champion coach Osborne and stay on attack mode until the game is put away? Also, the philosophy of establishing the running game is all good, if we are scoring on a consistent basis running the pigskin. Way too many 3 and outs that wear our defense out often when the time of possession goes south. Instead, mix up the approach keeping the opponents on their heels AND on the field. Do a combination of misdirection plays, spread the field and give our backs and receivers many touches where it is one on one besides the standard run / pass offense. Keeping the opponents defense on the field is going to wear them out more than what we are doing currently. I understand you can't prep for tons of new plays each week, but I think it should be a consideration.
That is the responsibility of our OC, not a lot of confidence that he can lead us to an elite level. His half time adjustments after having leads is as you say, playing not to lose instead of putting the hammer down and trying to blow out the opponent.
Look at his previous coaching history, not so impressive, especially at SC where he had a QB, Spencer Rattler! I had a caddy at a course in CO, shortly after Rhule was named coach, and he said thank you for taking him away from SC!
There oughta to be another category: Halftime Coaching Adjustments. It’s clear to me we have lagged behind, either through overconfidence in the gameplan or through being outcoached by the other side, because the opponent always has a vote. I think that category has been at best a grade of C-

I agree 100%! Against both Purdue and Rutgers he had a handful of chances to take off, but instead chose to throw an low-percentage pass underneath for an incomplete or a negligible gain.
