These Sonic characters (Sonic, Dr. Eggman, Tails, Knuckles & Amy) were originally appeared in Sonic Adventure (1998) because they’re modern & they’ve different design than classic ones. As for Sonic Superstars, they have classic design.
I mean, you could argue that in sonic adventure sonics was really just classic sonic with different shoes, slightly different proportions and green eyes dubbing them the adventure designs, so that the first appearance would be like sonic unleashed, and knuckles would be generations
