The beauty of this song is the way Arivu converts his personal story into a universal story. Arivu comes from suppressed group of people in India. His fore fathers were Indenture labors who went to sri lankha - toiled in virgin forest and converted land into Tea estates ( we can see Arivu sing in midst of tea plantations in visual). later they were forced to exile back to Tamil Nadu after few generation stating that "THEY DONT BELONG THERE" ( EMMIGRANT). He sings about his grand mother Valiammal . We can see her in the last frame sitting in the chair. Valliyammal --- his fore fathers-- mother earth. Thus he link this to tell the global truth of How Labors and land less farmers dont get the real fruit of their work. (Alienation of Human labor) ----- He reaches to people through his song to understand the "root " which could help in understanding that Its not caste , color, religion, language are real things but Nature and Human labor are.

The lyrics in English only brings 30% to 40% of the emotions. If you understand tamil you might shed tears. In English lyric says "what is the matter my sugarcane", but the metaphor actually means "why worry my dear sweet boy". Exactly how any grandma say. Success of the song is the truth behind it

yeah, unfortunately that's reallly true. its just like if you were to translate english poetry into another language...you'd get the literal translation, yeah, but so much would be lost in translation...it just wont convey the same emotion or beauty.

@@Dadsden those lyrics are the deepest in the song!
It's about the history of tamil civilization, how people worked to built an urban civilization some 4500 yrs ago in Indus valley and 1000 years later in banks of Vaigai(One such site is Keeezhadi), Thamirabharani etc.
The tamils (who were the farmers and potters) who build the most ancient civilization in all of south asia( still living in Tamilnadu not as some minority tribes but as people representing 90% of state's population) are now categorized as low caste people since the rule of tamilnadu by Madurai sultanate(13th century), Vijayanagar empire(14-17th), the English colonists(18th-20th) and finally after independence by government(1947-now) ,trying to promote Sanskrit as the superior language and Hindi and it's speakers as the ancestors of whole India by neglecting real history and archaeological evidence that proves otherwise.

Hey Dad, this is Vijay from Toronto, Canada. Hope you remind me. Long time, I moved from Miami to Toronto last year. Anyhow, Let me explain the exact meaning of this song which will open up your eye. Somehow you got the context of the song but still I want to explain further with exact importance. As you know this song has deep message for every mankind. Especially, when the male vocal lyrics comes, it is consider as the Mother Nature is singing/saying. “I planted fives trees, Nurtured a beautiful garden, My garden is flourishing, Yet my throat remains dry” that means the Mother Nature gave 5 elements Earth, Space, Water, Air and Land, then why are you still struggling to survive in this world. Because we failed to save and look after nature. That's why people suffer from not being able to live with nature everywhere. People living in the metro cities have no idea about Nature, but the people who live in the village know the value of nature. Next half... this time Mother Nature is asking ... Plz note the point “What the matter my dear? my sugarcane? (means like sweety) my grandson? and then it says “Bitter Gourd in my canopy, it has given us seeds, Left by our mom and dad... this is a powerful message that means those old mans are not Poor people or Farmers or Someone came without meaning...(that's what most of the people are thinking) actually they are all our ancestor, they left the seeds through our mom & dad... so what is meat by “Seeds” (everyone gets confused in this part) the exact meaning is “ the Current Generation” are the Seeds who failed to respect and save the nature. Only Tamil people knows the real value of these lyrics that also after listening to two-three times which make us emotion whenever we see those old people. Honestly, our ancestors lived their life happily with nature but we are poor people who spoiled the Mother Nature by expanding farms and cities are leaving less room for wildlife. The other major causes are the direct exploitation of wildlife such as hunting, climate change, pollution and the spread of invasive species. Climate change is set to become ever more destructive.. 😢🥺 Now plz watch the song again with this information, especially whenever the male version comes focus on the lyrics by thinking of Mother Nature. At this time, I’m sure now you'll feel the powerful message in your heart.

Dad, I personally feel this song talks on quite a lot topics ...the nature, creatures, tamil civilization, slavery, oppression, farmers, politics, tamil people,Sri Lankan tea plantation workers as Arivu's grand mother was one among them as he told in a show(the grandma voiced lamenting represents her)..the word enjoy ENJAAMI(meaning- my lord ,JAA MI or SAAMI is a colloquial word used to address their masters by the oppressed people ,this literally tells that this song is from their perspective)itself speaks loads.Though we toil ,cultivate,civilize...we are left with nothing end of the day,we give but nothing we got is the hidden dark truth..the last shot of the song has all the credited people in the frame is what I noted

Like Arivu, There are lot of people from the past in our land & with our language talked about the wellbeing, oppression, Socialism, Communism, etc., But it never reached your world, after all we remained inside our land and spent our days ever happily and with harmony to the nature. If there was no social media like today, we would have been unknown and our pain and thoughts would have been never heard of. Though there is no superiority in the world where God created everyone equal, we delivered some superior literature and culture from ancient times with the blessings of our Language THAMIZH. The Political motive from the main land may have stopped us, but social media never stop us from reaching you all. It's great that you realised the chill moments in the song while listening with the words of our land.

Here in Tamil culture, elders like grandmother used to call their grand kids as my god. Because we Take our ancestors as our god.. each clan have their own god and usually they name their kids with their grand parents name or their ancestors (god) name.
Its quite natural for a grandparent cal their grandkids My god (En saamy = Enjaami = you are My God alternatively its equal to My dear )

Oppari is indigenous to tamil culture.when someone passes away one tends to pacify their grief by sharing all the good things they experienced with the person who has just passed away whilst they are crying it sounds like a song...like eulogy but not written on paper...on spot they do it each person adds to it....the grandmom voice sings an eulogy to her grandson how they were denied their rights to the land which they plough and tilted and made it fertail generation after generation......

Every time i hear my grandmother planting trees whenever she has sufficient resources ans says this tree will say my name one day...... I never understood the depth in it... This song made me realize.... How our ancestors were connected to nature... Unlike us connected via social media and internet, phone's....

The best way to put the meaning here is the grandma at centre in last scene represents mother nature and the vocals of this song represents mother nature's voice advicing current generations how older generations cultivated the land and gave importance to nature and she just request us to take care of her and give a good nature to upcoming generations ❤️🙏 namaste

You just can’t translate poetry in 12 minutes, especially when you’re translating across cultures.
When she sings ‘caterpillar sister to the frog in the water’ it’s not literal as we all know. She just says how everything in our nature is interlinked and interdependent. She also says how this world we live in was created with the shit that came out of the chicken.
There’s a whole lot of stuff in the song that can’t be translated but can be felt. It’s a wake up call to the people to get back to their roots.

The line like " planted five trees and it flourished nice, but still my throat is dry" this means like the grandma of Arivu worked as a farmer in a land where the land belongs to another owner ......so whatever profit goes to thst guy and not grandma ........hope you understand like we hard work but not able to taste the essence.....this line was clearly explained in Arivu lyrics.....btw don't forgot all the lyrics are taken from "Oppari" ....Arivu has mentioned in interview ....Oppari is like whoever died the old ladies use some metamorphs or idioms kind of words to express the feelings which makes even an enemy to cry in the funeral place 😭😭😭.....Oppari we can say even the rock hearted person will get tears in eyes .......Oppari has another side too ....which is like while farming they use to sing to get out from work stress and enjoy the work ........like how we sing song while working 😀

Hi dad. It's about the ancestors actually about the natives of our land, who never wanted devlopment, who lived with nature and nature's nourish them. They just given the land to us and the people who got it built cities spoiled all of them and leading a life which is against the law of nature. And there are set of people who still follow the culture of our natives have been suppresed by the people who think they are cultured. Now the natives are minority here. And the song is to represent and support them. Hope u got it.

6:34 It's about the history of tamil civilization, how people worked to built an urban civilization some 4500 yrs ago in Indus valley and 1000 years later in banks of Vaigai(One such site is Keeezhadi), Thamirabharani etc.
The tamils (who were the farmers and potters in previous lines) who build the most ancient civilization in all of south asia( still living in Tamilnadu not as some minority tribes but as people representing 90% of state's population) are categorized as low caste people since the rule of tamilnadu by Madurai sultanate(13th century), Vijayanagar empire(14-17th), the English colonists(18th-20th) and finally after independence by government(1947-now) ,trying to promote Sanskrit as the superior language and Hindi and it's speakers as the ancestors of whole India by neglecting real history and archaeological evidence that proves otherwise.
