- Our hosts react to the music video for "Enjoy Enjaami", a 2021 Tamil-language album song and the debut single of Sri Lankan playback singer Dhee featuring singer, lyricist Arivu, produced by Santhosh Narayanan under the music label/management team “Maajja”, an independent platform launched by composer A. R. Rahman.
Background on Enjoy Enjaami:
According to the lyricist, Arivu, the song was written as a celebration of his roots, harkening back to a time when humanity was a fledgling civilisation, living in harmony with the turns of the earth and the many lives that shared it with them. His inspiration came from several places.
Both, Dhee and Arivu had discussed while working on Manikandan's Kadaisi Vivasayi. Arivu, who has been writing songs for The Casteless Collective, a political folk band, stated that: "They [the songs] are filled with anger which is not something that people would listen to. But, we do it knowing that it’s not a commercial space; Athu Makkalukaana Kural (The People's Voice)." However, he wanted the song to reach everyone and yet to have a political depth to it, which is according to Arivu, the idea - ulagam naaikum, narikum, punaikum, elikum, pooranukum sontham dhan (The world is for all the living beings) - came up. The team also stated that the song is inspired by Pa. Ranjith's work for his band Casteless Collective.
The song is the story of Valliammal, Arivu's grandmother, who used to call him 'Enjaami' (My Lord). It was the story told to him by his grandmother about the Tamil migration to Ceylon during the Colonial era. During the period of Colonial India, with a poverty-stricken population, it was a market for cheap labour. Hordes of Tamil people were sent to Ceylon in the 19th century to work on the tea, coffee and rubber plantations, with his grandmother being one of them. This inspired Arivu's lyrics which alluded to humanity's relationship to the Earth, with reference to the land, soil, and ancestors. Valliammal makes an appearance at the end of the music video, sat on a throne-esque seat, flanked by Arivu and Dhee to her left and right.. Through this song, Arivu hoped to convey the forgotten roots of the Earth and the roots of self as a people.
V Vivek of Deccan Herald stated that the song is a tribute to the Tamil plantation house and its workers.

Love your reaction. This is one of my favorite songs. I don't know the language either, so I had to rely on the subs under the CC button. Luckily, they were actual translations and not auto-generated. Lol!
It is my understanding that the song was written after long conversations with his grandmother. She had spent a couple decades in Sri Lanka as a laborer in the sugar cane fields when Sri Lankan labor was unavailable (I believe due to clashes between the Government and those wanting to bring it down) and promises of land and money were made. Once the issues were gone, the Indian laborers were sent back to India with empty hands. She then went on to work in local farmer's fields as a hired field worker for little money ("I have planted trees and made a garden, but my throat is parched").
There is a history of Indian laborers being sent as indentured servants under the British, to Sri Lanka, and to the West Indies, Africa, and elsewhere, after slavery was abolished. Those who "hired" the Indian laborers made sure to charge high prices for the trip, the food, the shacks, the poor medical care, anything they could charge for against the promised wages, which were low to begin with.
As a working single mother she was still able to send her son to school and raised him to become a Professor. The professor then raised his son to get a degree in Engineering, followed by an MBA. The son (grandson) then went on to write and sing songs and raps for Tamil films. They usually have a lot of strong direct political messages, I've read (I could be wrong about all of this), this being one of the less direct ones.
The song begins with him asking his grandmother to tell him stories, and she responds, calling him Enjaami ("my dear", "my little lord", when he begins to sing in "her" raspy voice) and telling him to ride the elephants and shower in the rain. If all else fails, there is always hope for the future (crop seeds) when the ancestors in their wisdom have left seeds of the trellis-climbing bitter-melon vines hidden up in the canopy of the trees to plant for a future crop.
It is my best guess that the first humans arrived after the African diaspora spread out of Africa 69 to 80 thousand years ago. They likely followed the coastlines because all rivers (fresh water) always empty into the ocean. So, if you keep the seawater on your right, there will always be fresh water coming up ahead from the left. Along the way there would be clams to dig up for protein, minerals, and plenty of salty seaweed. The rivers would have edible vegetation, fruit trees, coconuts, etc.
In South India there is a village in the forests that has been passing down verbally, for thousands of years, songs in an unknown language, unlike any other language, a language whose closest analog is bird song, suggesting that it is one of the first human spoken languages.
Those forest people, that he is descended from, have lived in those forests for a long time, but without ownership. Outsiders keep coming in and claiming the land for themselves and destroying the forests.

One confession: we did originally watch it with the English subtitles on, but we were so blown away by the visuals of the music video that we barely caught 10% of the words, and a lot of the meaning was lost on us. We visited Sri Lanka over 20 years ago, not that long after it was taken back from the British (and stopped being called Ceylon.) During that trip, we spent a few days up in the mountains where the tea plantations are located, and honestly it was the saddest part of our trip. It was obvious that the Indian people working the tea fields still lived a life of servitude and were not well treated. It was such high altitude and the oxygen was so thin that it was hard to walk around up there, and yet many of the workers were elderly, well past retirement age. And the fields were absolutely full of rats, still carrying nasty diseases.
Sad to see that, even with the British gone from power, their old practices still remained. That's why this video gives us so much hope, to see those marginalized people finally given a voice and the spotlight they deserve. ❤️

Brief Info on Artist - Arivu & Dhee
Dhee is Tamil of srilankan Tamil origin (mother) settled in Australia but now moved to Chennai with Step Dad Santhosh the producer of this video .. She can speak Tamil but can't quite read and write it well as she was brought up in Australia
Like wise Arivu ancestors were from Tamil Nadu near Kutralam - who were taken tho Ceylon (now Srilanka and not ethnic Srilankan Tamils as Dhees's mother Meenakshi Iyer) workers for tea plantation by the Brits when drought that region and was once again displaced after centuries from Srilanka by Srilankan Gov after it got independence from the British.
Which was messed up by the Brits in not sorting the equal rights first as agreed by all parties which was eventually rescinded by the Sinhalese Bandaranayaka PM period
By forcefully removing Tamil of its official status n forcefully inserting Singalese language while removing the Tamil language off school media and how ancient Tamil library and its literal works and arts were burnt down to wipe out Tamil historical traces and that set of the dispute leading to disharmony and friction within the 3 societies -,thanks to one leader (just as the division of India into Pakistan all Bcos Brits messed it up) ... ok enough of this

Tamil is known as the Oldest Spoken Living language - still spoken currently on a daily basis unlike other old languages
Tamils civilisation is also known as "The Lost Living Civilisation" by anthropologist and archeologist alike as their architecture and cultural habits are exactly similar to that of Mohenjedaro & Harappan civilisation (whose people suddenly when missing without a trace).
Tamil is classified as the only "Super Classical" languages as classified by Harvard university since Tamil satisfied all 11 prerequisite condition for classification for classical status unlike the rest.
Some classical language are Chinese, Japanese, Latin, Hebrew & Tamil, Sanskrit, .
N closest was Hebrew & Japanese with 9, I believe (from recollection) n the rest below that.with Sanskrit @4-5 (no hindi or Urdu in the list surprisingly) and Chinese meeting 6-7 criterions.
In Tamil language the Tamilians coined 20 more words for mathematical numbers beyond 1 billion n y such high crunching do they need it 2000 years ago; unlike now only recently did we incorporate new words such billion, zillion, trillion, quadrillion, tetra zillion n such
So older civilisations were more advanced in maths then itself which we don't quite appreciate.
There are 5 most intelligent languages - Tamil, Japanese, Latin, Hebrew, Chinese if not Arabic
The reason Bcos the language has continuity in those language which is linked to maths, transpiring into the "Logic" realms leading advance civilisation development and so the claim of "intelligent" Language.
For example, In English the number stops at 10 (discontinuity) n there is a disconnect after 10 (between 11 to 19) the continuity behind only after number 20 onwards (21 23 .. 29 ... 30, 31 ... 50, 51 ... 80 .. 99 , 100, 101..... 111 .... 121 ... 150 to infinity)
So after 10 , 11 shd be read as ten one ten two not eleven or twelve but after 20, 21 is read as twenty one or 33 as thirty three n so on but the disconnect is between ten and nineteen (shd be ten ten (10) to ten nine (19) as per by logic.
Bcos of this shortcomings other languages does not fit into the most intelligent languages as per experts who classified it to be so.
The continuity is what separates these 5 languages from the rest.

The way "Enjoy" and "Enjaame" is written in the lyrics has two different meanings.
(1). En+Thaiyee is pronounced as Enjayee. The real meaning is: My dear Mother.
(2). En+Saami is written in the lyrics as "En-Jaami", It means: My dear God.
Basically, the lyrics addresses My mother and My God. The real intention is to address close relatives with repect. A Grandmother in rural and tribal setting often addresses her grandson as 'Ny Golden boy (looks like My Lord Ram/Lord Krishna),

We appreciate you taking the time to comment, but our point was that it was humbling to see kids in Sri Lanka who got excited about the idea of a shirt, as opposed to greedy kids in the West who would barely be happy with a new games console.
