Garbage is another of those 90's alt Era bands that brought females to the forefront. Loved em!!!!
They are still going strong, they released an album last year.
Check out their new stuff, they've still got it.
Garbage is one of those bands that gives you the feels, you know. And Shirley Manson never seems to age, still looks incredible.
If you ever watched the short lived tv show Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles you'll understand why. 😆

I had the opportunity to have a few drinks with Shirley around 2004 in Madison wisconsin. She's a very cool chick. I've had a crush on her for years.
I love Garbage. I got introduced to them playing Gran Turismo, evidently as did a bunch of folks. "Stupid Girl" is one of my favorites but there are a bunch that I like a lot.

The lead singer, Shirley Manson, is a redheaded Scottish fireball. I crushed on her SO HARD back in the day.
She's appeared on the Craig Ferguson show several times; I think they both have to restrain themselves from letting their Scottish speech and accents get *too* strong, or else we Americans might not be able to understand them. 😃

My brother's late mother in law knew Shirley Manson's mother quite well - they went to the same Edinburgh church. Tenuous connection or what?
She has a great a great story. She was actually suffering from serious depression and self-esteem issues writing this song and all of the songs on the first two albums. Thats where she got her inspiration for these hard-hitting lyrics on the first two albums. She is in fact my celebrity crush.
What's sad is that most people will assume she wrote nothing, and "just" sang. Very few people realize she's ALSO the lyricist. I don't usually pull the gender card, but people usually assume the male singers write the lyrics, yet Shirley Manson is never assumed to be so.🤷
The singer is Shirley Manson from Scotland,and the rest of the band is from the L.A. area.They just released a new album last year and they are still a great band, I always liked the song Special the best, great choice.
Actually the rest of the guys in Garbage are all from Madison, Wisconsin, where they all still live.
She was an actress, too. Not sure how much she's been in but she was in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles season 2 or the second half of the first season, I forget.
@@tomross6652 Yep, the building that housed the studio where the band recorded is along one of the main streets in downtown Madison. You'd never know what it was by the look of the place though.

Another good sound from Garbage is the song “Queer”. The title is in the context of awkwardness, not sexuality, although the lyrics are quite sexual.

The drummer is Butch Vig the famous producer who produced the Nirvana Nevermind album and Smashing Pumpkins Gish album, and more recently the Foo Fighters Wasting Light. If you want to listen to female grunge you have to do "Hole", lead singer is Courtney Love who was Kurt Cobain's wife, his widow now. check out the songs Miss World, Violet, and Doll Parts.
Definitely. As trash as Courtney is she knows how to steal from quality. And she is a half decent performer.

"The World is Not Enough" is Garbage doing a Bond Movie theme. It's pretty epic. I love playing Garbage on a road trip. Great band.
Yes. PLEASE listen to more of them. They're one of the few acts around that perfectly ride the line between experimental and pop.
I just saw them in September with Alanis Morissette. The 25th anniversary of Jagged Little Pill tour. It was my kids first real concert. It was awesome!

Producer Butch Vig had produced Nirvana's landmark 'Nevermind' album... and a number of 90's 'grunge' rock bands. By 1994, Vig wanted to do his own project... he worked w/ 2 pro musicians Steve Marker & Duke Erickson to produce a new record which was more industrial & gothic-sounding (Vig played drums) ... He also saw an MTV video by a UK band called Angelfish - he loved the vocals of the singer, a Scottish woman named Shirley Manson, and they contacted her to see if she wanted to audition for the project they named Garbage (computer term for discarded data)
In the UK, Shirley Manson had been singing for a while, but her band Angelfish was breaking up when she got a call from "Nirvana's producer" to audition... She said she flew to Madison, Wisconsin and was literally broke & starving. Her first audition was a disaster, but she wanted to make the cut... so she persisted. She subsequently showed her creativity and got the gig.
Garbage's first album was released in 1995, and MTV pushed the band's video singles - "I'm only happy when it rains" ... 'Queer' ... 'Stupid girl' ... 'Vow' ... 'Milk'... The album went 2X platinum in the US and became a huge hit worldwide, making Shirley Manson a star.
Garbage released their 2nd album 'Version 2.0' in 1998... that went platinum w/ MTV hits "Push it" ... 'I think I'm paranoid' ... 'Special'...
Subsequent albums "Beautiful Garbage" (2001) and 'Bleed like me' (2005) did not do as well, and the band split up for awhile... but they decided to reform and were amazed that their 2012 album 'Not your kind of people' charted & tours were selling out... 'Strange little birds' was released in 2016 and the record & tour did very well... Garbage's 2021 album "No gods no masters" charted globally once again.
Back when cars had CD players, Garbage was intentionally left in my 12 disc loader for 2.5 years w/out ever removing it. Shirley Manson is a gem.

One of my favorite bands growing up in the 90's. Love this song. And personally it actually helps to snap me out of a depressed state.
I don't remember the exact story, but supposedly, Butch Vig was playing an unfinished version of a song in the background at his studio, and a friend commented "dude, that shit sounds like garbage," and he decided that should be the name of the band.
The friend was Trent Reznor, and it was Trent's response to Vig's Perfect Drug remix.
I heard a totally different story back then, think Shirley Manson said that in the studio they try to find out what's garbage in a song, then remove it and that's where the name comes from.
Garbage is what happens when you get 3 former musicians from different bands turned Producers who discover an unknown singer.
Pain and misery expressed through melodic, high energy music.
Amazing band, nothing but great albums from them. I hope you check out stuff from their entire catalog
Shirley had an incredible major role in season 2 of "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" which is a TV show it seems that few have ever seen even 14 years later.

I saw Garbage in 2001 and again in 2019. One of my favorite bands of all time. Incredibly talented, passionate, unique.
Shirley Manson is a goddess. I was lucky enough to see them a few times in the 90's and they never disappointed.

I just loved watching Shirley Manson at the time on all the late night talk shows. She was hilarious. I loved Garbage music also.
I remember playing this song in my room when the album was new. On my boom box. Late at night when everybody was asleep. I had the headphones on but it wasn't fully jack in and my mom came into my room demanding I turn off the boom box.

Glad you did this; Shirley Manson has one of the best female voices in rock IMO. There are a bunch of great Garbage tracks to check out, but maybe your next stop should be "Stupid Girl." PS. They did a Bond Theme, believe it or not: "The World is Not Enough." It was good.
Garbage is just... exquisite. The production is insanely good, the songs both catchy and deep, Shirley was the definition of scary-hot. They are one of my very favorite (part of a 3-way tie for #1) female-fronted alt-rock bands.

In an interview Shirley Manson (the vocalist) stated [and I'm paraphrasing it] this is basically a rip on the glamorized Dark Goth Depression trend that was going at the time which was the anti-establishment or alt-social fashion.
Lex kind of had it... and funny you said it's female grunge because the leader and drummer of the band was the producer of Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins among others in the 90s grunge genre.
“Vow” and “Stupid Girl” are my favourites from their debut album. “You look so fine” from their second is good for a change of pace.

Garbage were very big in the 90's. Also, their drummer, Butch Vig is an acclaimed producer and worked with Nirvana on Nevermind among many others. So they have the grunge sound pretty much at their disposal.
Classic Butch Vig. Produces some of the best talent out there and put out this band in the 90's as well.
I was introduced to this song when Homicide: Life On The Street playedd it over the closing scene of an episode where a case went bad and Giardello and one of his detectives were standing on the roof while the rain poured down on them

And they did a nearly note-perfect cover of this song (although a little bit "grungier"). Haven't heard from her in years. Funny (ish) story about when they hired Shirley Manson as the singer. They sent her up to the vocal booth to audition. She sang. They LOVED her so much that the band spent hours brainstorming songs and her awesome sound. But no one told her. She waited in the vocal room the whole time broken because she thougjt they hated her so much that they didn't bother to come tell her. They went "oh shit" and remembered she was still up in the booth. They went up and she was in tears when they told her they loved her and she had the gig. It all worked out.
Just so you know, this song was actually parodying the Grunge movement of the time, where all the songs seem so depressing. This group wasn't trying to fit in but to poke fun, kind of like Monster Magnet's "Negasonic Teenage Warhead".
This was my sisters favorite band in the 90s.

Garbage is, ironically, a great band. Shirley Manson rocks! They were big in the 90s for sure, but they're still around, and unlike many bands, none of the members have changed since their debut in 1995 (though they have taken some breaks, they've always reunited, and no one's ever been replaced). That's pretty damn awesome all on its own.

Shirley Manson is the sexiest person I have ever seen perform live. She just had an aura that was completely intoxicating - I didn't even dance during the show, because I was just staring at her. Check out "When I Grow Up", "Stupid Girl", and "Vow" for songs that were hits. "Stroke of Luck" and "Fix Me Now" weren't released as singles, but they're my favorite songs from their catalogue.

I kinda thought song was about struggling with depression for so long that you’re just totally comfortable with being depressed, and feeling “happy” is so foreign to you. Most of our first Garbage. Shirley Manson is an awesome frontwoman with three rocking bandmates(guys, btw, but don't hold it against anybody, lol).
btw, search Yeah Yeah Yeahs, pick from top few titles; singer Karen O is another jewel kicking ass. Also, Metric, 'Girls, Gold and Guns'.
For female grunge, Kurts wife Courtney Love is a must listen. The song Violet is probably the best. L7 Pretend We Are Dead is another classic.

If I rolled onto the job site in the morning pounding "One More Thing" or "American Society", it was a sure bet that one way or the other I was headed back to the Hall by the end of the day. Hole is another of my all time favorites. I really wish Courtney could have kept it together. She got a lot of shit, some of it deserved, but most of it not.

It feels soo good. Let them wallow in the pain. Misery loves the one who doesn't love me. My heart is broken so make me feel even worse. I'm only happy when it rains 🌧. This is the modus operandi for anyone scarred and scared. Until they grow sick and tired of being sick and tired. Light hurts the eyes and a broken heart still beats. It's a Scottish thing... This is a direct reference to the Jesus and Mary Chain ("Happy When It Rains") and a bit of a tongue-in-cheek jab to "winklepicker kids, Mary Chain debris" (lawrence denim) and early 90's self-obsessed goths. I was one of em!
"I'm riding high upon a deep depression" Some days you just want to see the rain pour down to reflect your state of mind.
There were many times I was in my car and blasting this song - along with "Stupid Girl".

You have no idea what a breath of fresh air Garbage was when they came out in 1995. Grunge was in the midst of running out its string. Shirley Manson wasn't another shrieking riot girl. They weren't pretending to be a garage band. They had tech, they understood it, and they employed it. They understood pop, and how to manipulate it into something new and creative. Still one of my favorite albums to this day. Everyone who's tried to emulate them has failed. !m!
