Interesting talk. I live a strict Code of Honour that I began to develop at the age of 15, just prior to getting my first black belt. My Sensei required a written copy of our personal code of honour before we were allowed to take the black belt test. Over the years I have continued to revise and review my code on my birthday. Now as a Sensei myself, a Born Again Christian and a Freemason, I have had an almost overwhelming source of examples and information on the subject. But he is correct. Anyone stating they live by such a code runs the risk of mockery by the politically correct for whom an absolute is a terror. This is demonstrated by the attacks in the comments below. Honour has nothing to do with gender (just another PC red herring) no matter how much you quote Plato. My beloved bride of 25 years is dainty and demur and one of the most honourable persons I have ever met. But be not deceived. She is not weak as stated in the stereotype below. At 100 pounds she can and will put a full grown man in intensive care if his behavior so warrants. Her code prevents her from killing him. But not all codes are as limiting. Depends on the person and their commitment to their character. I have noticed that the few who live with honour are much less likely to spout the "Party Line", rather they learn the facts of whatever the issue or situation is and how things line up with their code before making what might be a more popular statement. That's my thought.
Yes society is failing cause most of us are becoming weaklings. Honor demands sacrifice, integrity and discomfort in life. And today's society want everything but that.
Plato wrote far better on virtue ethics 2400 years ago when he wrote in the Republic that women and men are basically the same and must be treated as equals. The woman depicted in this video looks like she might blow away. She's dainty and demur, not strong, assertive like the woman that is depicted as dishonorable. The double standard between how honor is applied to men and women in this video is so stark, that the men who enter into a dual are depicted as demonstrating a high concern for honor while the woman slapping a man is depicted as dishonorable. Presumably she too is defending her honour, no? This gendered double standard in what sort of character trait counts as honorable reflects a particular standpoint of the soft middling classes that so often wring their hands in moral panic. Working class men and women know that honor requires both strength of character and mutual support regardless of their gender. In the end, is there a worker who looks at the man in this presentation and thinks to themselves, "this is who I want to be"? Spare us from such a prudish and reactionary vision of the good.
Since the scene of the woman slapping the man was played as the speaker discussed a historic male tendency towards infidelity, the obvious intent was to show the MAN as dishonorable, not the woman. As you suggest, she was defending her own honor. There is no double standard here.
YOUR honour SIRS should be a complete repentance of misrepresenting God's Word and a return to the bible, rather than dishnouring yourselves and others as FALSE PROPHETS: binitarinism, denial of the Holy Spirit as person of the Trinity, non-partisanism, British Israelism, Legalism, Armstrongism, splinter groups of Worldwide Church of God, misrepresenting the immortality of the soul and all the while touting yourself as the ones who know the true gospel. Which gospel is that exactly? Because it is not the one of my Lord Jesus Christ - Lord rebuke you!
