I've had a 10 ga browning inventor gold I've hunted with a diamond scope killed bunch birds with it as I've got older the weight kills ya. So I got a 12 ga shells are easier to find .but the 10 ga will always be my baby
Scopes also help old eyes that can't see open sights and the target clearly at the same time. I have the Vortex Crossfire II 1-4x24 with an illuminated reticle. It's essentially a scope and red dot in one package. The target acquisition speed and field of view blows away all of the red dots I've looked at and I've seen a lot of them.
Ive used a old mossberg 835 from K-mart bought 20 plus years ago with a red dot scope & a double X choke, shooting 4 shot 3,1/2s and ive been able to kill longbeards 75 yards away. Just a combination of all the right things has a pattern smaller than a basketball at 55 yards
At the 8:41 mark...you spoke of being a "tightwad" it made me think to recommend the Primos tightwad choke tube. Prolly THE BEST $20 +/- you can spend for ya gun. They can be had all day long for well....like I mentioned earlier, $20 +/- MPN PS6777.
Nice setup, I'm using a mossberg 835 for the last 30 yrs..it never failed me..I did change my ammo to XR's this year..what a difference in my pattern much tighter..love the videos..
Good video. I had to use my wife’s 870 20 ga it worked fine, but I prefer my 12 lb browning 10 ga, I do a lot of roaming but when you touch that trigger I know it was worth lugging around. Options are great tho nice to see 410s getting popular again too
Nice to have a new 20 ga, guy. I switched to a 20 ga about 10 years ago mine is a hammer, I use hevi shot 5,6 71/2 .its lights out, no doubt . Killed a double beard Tom weigh 28.6 pounds had two inch spurr, hes at the taxidermist. Good luck we always use archery equipment first week ,if no luck well go on the offensive and bring the hammer. Mossberg 500, black synthetic stock, has a double bead and like said it's no doubt, and knocks em out.👍👍🦃💥
Tss is the way to go I have the Steven's 301 in the 20 and I shoot apex gt-20 9 shot and I got 56 in a 5 inch circle and 180 in the 10 inch circle with the factory choke just got the indian creek choke for it cant wait to see the performance of it I shot a long beard last year at 10 yards and just about to the head off and I use a holosun circle dot on it so many people made the change to tss I think that we will see less crippling of birds with this shot
Remington's all day everyday and Sunday's. 11-87 Shurshot super magnum. Unlike many factory "turkey guns" this one actually comes with a turkey choke. Anyone switching to TSS and you have Hevi-shot and think it's ineffective now and want to sell, hit me up.
i have found that clamp on rib sights are much more accurate than scopes on shotguns with removable barrels. there is play between your receiver (where your scope is mounted) and your barrel. when you mount both front and rear sights on the barrel, it makes a big difference. the accuracy improvement is REALLY noticeable when shooting slugs at 50 or 100 yards.
Good to see the turkey killer still learning. I think you’ll come around the the red dot soon too. Good luck in Tennessee. My 3 days of Tennessee hunting didn’t go well. The turkeys didn’t respond to calls and were on the neighboring property. They stayed quiet 90% of the day too. Just wasn’t in the cards this trip.
Thats a nice set. I did carry a Remington SP 10ga turkey gun. Then i got my hands on a Mossberg 500 410 TSS turkey gun. 2 months later i bought a mossberg SA 410ga TSS turkey gun. I am shooting Apex Ninja 9.5 shot out of both. With a Indian Creek. 385 chokes in both. Then not very long after that. I sold my 12 ga turkey loads. And decided i also needed a 20ga. I had a bunch of 12 ga turkey loads. That i had bought over the yrs. I had enough money out of the sell. I bought a mossberg SA 20ga turkey gun . I am shooting federal 20 ga 3 inch 9 shot. Using a Carlson tss choke. All of them has reflex red dots. I have a Simmon 2.5 pro diamond scope. I have been thinking about try it out. I live in the Ozarks mountains in ARKANSAS. Carrying the 10ga was so heavy. 410's and 20 ga are so lite. I been hunting in the woods with the 410's. And around fields with the 20ga. I wanted some Apex or foxtrot tss 3 inch 9 or 9.5 shot for my 20ga. But everyone was sold out. So i had to go with federal 9 shot tss.
I prefer the reflex red dot sights for a turkey setup. Lighter weight than a scope, you don’t have to be perfectly on the gun. And just as accurate as a scope. I really like the Bushnell RXS-100 Also don’t bother with #5 or larger. Especially with TSS. #7 and #9’s have so much pattern density. Great patterns out of my Stevens 301 .410 and 20ga.
Dale I use TSS in Stoeger m3020 24in barrel. I love my Vortex Crossfire red dot. it works for me. I agree set your gun for what works for you. I am old school like you. I been hunting turkey 25 years and remember that TSS #9 has the same energy at 60 yds as a # 4 lead at 40yds. I enjoy your videos Gobbler Down 🦃🦃🦃
AWESOME run and gun setup for sure!!!! And you DEFINITELY cant go wrong with the Apex TSS loads! Best of luck this season, and God Bless you and your family!!!!👍🤗🙏
Great Video! I am running a Stoeger M3500 12 ga 3.5in LB XR with Carlson XR, it shoots Double X and Nitro good but yeah 6 shot is key. I am trying those for next season.
I've patterned Apex Ninja & Foxtrot 383 outta a 410.. Deadly out to 40 yards... Getting ready to pattern my 20ga with Apex Ninja & Carlson's .555 choke.. My 20ga don't like XR #6 at all.
I used to have an 835 myself. I shot it for a few years with a primos jelly head choke in it with 3 1/2" #5 Longbeard shells and it was great. I never even missed or lost a turkey with it
I too use an M3020 with TSS....but at the 9:20 mark you said around 35 yards you're gonna start to run into trouble, and if I understand your meaning, you're saying lead won't kill efficiently past that....and that's simply not the case. Folks have been killing turkeys with lead for a long time and I can tell you it's been done alot further than 35-40 yds. #4s will flatten a Gobbler at 60 all day long.
No that’s not what I meant in that lead won’t kill past 35. I’ve been killing turkeys at 45 50 with lead for years. But with this particular gun with lead shot after 35 yards it’s so little of a pattern in the kill zone with only 9 or 10 shots in the head , that if you shoot further especially in the woods then your not gonna to have enough insurance to make sure of a hit past 35. That’s what I meant
my steoger m3020 has no mounting screw holes . my 12 gage does. to bad. but i've killed plenty with my 12 gage and i have a scope on it. will be my first year using a scope. set up from deer hunting.
I wanna see my turkey up close and personal I don’t wanna shoot him at 50 or 60 yards that ain’t callin him in but them shells are badass and sure look like they’d get the job done
I’m with ya there. No more than 40 is how I like it. But 95 percent of mine I kill is 25 yards or under. But the apex loads does give that little extra push for those insurance shots
Only in pattern density when compared to a #7 1/2 TSS load. Tungsten/TSS is more dense than lead so it’ll carry more energy to the target. Which past 35yds is where the TSS really starts shining and has an advantage. Or if you go to the smaller #9 TSS loads you get even more pattern density/ hits on target.
Officially, it appears to be called the "KONUSPRO 1.5-5x 32 Slug Gun Scope", though most retailers list it as Konus Pro. If the company calls it a '"slug gun scope", it has a chance to survive turkey loads. I have a red dot that will not hold zero with turkey loads. Maybe the Konuspro is the one to try.
They can be pricy but most won’t shoot all of them in a season. If you get two boxes you shoot a couple maybe to dial it in you got 8 left. Unless a guy travels a lot he ain’t shooting 8 turkeys lol. But I don’t blame anyone for shooting lead. If they shoot great that’s all that matters
I don’t get his reasoning for a tight choke with his 12-gauge, but a less constricted one for his 20 😳 He should be consistent if hunting the same terrain. Go figure!
Yep it’s bad can’t talk about our setup we use to turkey hunt with and it will get worse as long as we let them tell us what to do and what not to do. It is what it is. I’m not trying to start an argument don’t get me wrong but we all know it’s true.
Hard to beat a 20 gauge with tss and the right choke it’s UNREAL in our testing!
Unless you got a 870 TS Special Purpose Super Mag......12 gauge....best turkey gun ever made.....period!
Scope all the way!!! Been using one for 20+ years. Never would even consider going back without one
RIGHT ON V PLEX BRINGS THAT HEAD IN UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL I KEEP MINE AT 3X AND CAN PICK BETTWEN TWIGS AND BRANCHES DOWN RANGE IF I HAVE TO.
Late to the party. I've been using a Leupold NWTF Turkey Plex for years on my turkey guns. Leupold quick making it but it's a heck of a scope.
I've had a 10 ga browning inventor gold I've hunted with a diamond scope killed bunch birds with it as I've got older the weight kills ya. So I got a 12 ga shells are easier to find .but the 10 ga will always be my baby

9:17 is where I’m at I’ll be back in a few minutes buddy.
That's a heck of a pattern right there. Thanks for the video.
Those long beards pattern well but a lead #6 only going 1000 FPS makes me worry about penetration and energy over 30 yards
#6 lead carries enough energy to cleanly and ethically kill out 40yds, out of any setup with the pattern to put pellets on target
I prefer the reflex red dot sights for a turkey setup. Lighter weight than a scope, you don’t have to be perfectly on the gun. And just as accurate as a scope.

Nice set up. I have 2 of those scopes, there pretty good. Never tried it for turkey hunting.
Im 13 and this past sunday i killed my fifth turkey and first by myself and it had a 9 inch beard and one inch hooks killed it with a 870 12 gauge
Nice! 5 dead turkeys at only 13 is pretty impressive
Way to go young man!!

Nice setup Matt! I'm just using my grandpa's 870 20ga with the Carlson Long Beard Choke and Long Beard #6 shot. Good luck buddy!!
The apex ninjas are awesome loads, killed a bird at 37 yds with it last. Shooting a Remington 870 20 gauge 18 in barrel.
Nice setup

Try the hevi shot choke

my steoger m3020 has no mounting screw holes . my 12 gage does. to bad. but i've killed plenty with my 12 gage and i have a scope on it. will be my first year using a scope. set up from deer hunting.
Does the scope have to be on a certain power setting for the Diamond to be filled to range turkey?
Great Video!

Daley, how is the trigger on your 3020.....mine is very heavy but the gun is an older model

Was the gun drilled and tapped? how did you install the rail?
You ever consider reloading 👌🇺🇸
I think 71/2 lead shot would compare with the Apex pattern.
Only in pattern density when compared to a #7 1/2 TSS load. Tungsten/TSS is more dense than lead so it’ll carry more energy to the target. How much does the scope magnify ? 3-9×40?
What if you would tighten up choke with Longbeard XRs, like to see how that would compare
Then you risk a very uneven pattern from over choking
Does that gun come drilled for a scope base?
Ya, they're pretty pricey! Doesn't matter though, unavailable for purchase anyway. Every type is out of stock
I purchase shells all through out the year. They don’t go bad when stored correctly. Check it out. See if it works for you.
Shells practically never will go bad. People shoot 70 year old paper shells still today.

I don’t get his reasoning for a tight choke with his 12-gauge, but a less constricted one for his 20 😳
